Last week, entertainer will.i.am talked about his upcoming iPhone camera attachment that would boost the phone’s resolution up to 14MP. The announcement is now official, and here’s a look at how you can make your iPhone into a more more formidable camera. It looks kind of bulky and gaudy, but the iPhone 5 version does increase the camera’s resolution as promised.

The launch event happened in London where will.i.am unveiled devices under the name foto.sosho, supposedly sounding like “Photo Social.” All of the cases come with interchangeable lenses, including a standard, fish-eye, wide, and telephoto. They also have built-in flashes, a built-in sliding keyboard, and a suite of software-based editing, filtering and sharing tools.

The iPhone 4/4S will be limited to these features. The iPhone 5 version that will be released later will feature the 14MP sensor replacement. iPhoneotographers will be able to share photos and connect with others through the site i.am. The iPhone 4/4S models will be available December 6 for £199 and £299 (~$320 and $480 USD) from Selfridges. The iPhone 5 model will arrive next year and no prices have been announced.

While those prices seem extremely high for what you’re getting, the company is pitching these as “fashion accessories” more than just iPhone accessories, which they think gives them the ability to sell them for more.

popSLATE iPhone 5 case comes with separate e-ink display

Smartphones cases are becoming pretty dry nowadays — it’s mostly just the same old thing for every case. However, one case in particular, called the popSLATE, slaps on a 4-inch e-ink display on the back, effectively giving your iPhone 5 two screens. It’s currently trying to get $150,000 in funding on Indiegogo.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen something like this, though. During IFA 2012 back in August, we checked out a similar concept that involved a smartphone with two screens — one LCD, and the other e-ink. However, the popSLATE case simply adds an e-ink display to your existing iPhone 5, which seems a bit more practical at this point in time.

The 4-inch e-ink screen is always on, but the company claims it’s very energy efficient. The screen can be used for all sorts of things, including notifications, sports scores, maps, and lists and notes. Plus, since it’s always on, you don’t have to worry about the screen going into sleep mode with the rest of the phone when you’re reading something. The company is building an API for the screen, which means that we should be seeing a lot of third-party apps add support for the second screen.

The company is still in the early stages of development and the case itself is only in its prototype stages, but the company has already gathered a team of designers, engineers and developers to make the case. They also have a partnership with E Ink in order to use the latest e-ink technology. Two colors will be available at launch (black and white), and it will start at a price of $79 for the first 500 supporters, then $99 and up from there.

n-Sert iPhone Case Offers Swappable Backs

Over the years, I’ve managed to accumulate about 7 or 8 iPhone cases. Some are broken, some are cheap knock-offs and a couple are quite nice. That being said, I’ve always have liked the style of wood cases for my gadgets. There’s something about the juxtaposition of high-tech with sustainable materials. In this case, we don’t have an actual wood case, but a woodgrain design that looks pretty real.

The n-Sert Case from Design Skinz is a case that can be customized to your liking.  The thin protective case allows you to change the look of your iPhone with a variety of interchangeable inserts like the wood pattern shown above, as well as a number of graphical patterns.

The case itself is available in matte black, white or hot pink for the iPhone 4/4S or iPhone 5 through Design Skinz’s Etsy store for $21.99(USD), including one design insert of your choice. Additional inserts are available for $7.99 each.

The idea isn’t completely original, but it makes for a good way to change the look of your phone quickly and inexpensively, and without having to buy a bunch of different cases.

Popslate launches iPhone 5 case with fourinch E Ink screen

This is pretty darn cool. It’s called Popslate — an iPhone 5 case with a four-inch E Ink screen on the back — and it’s launching right now on Indiegogo for $79 in two colors. Combined with a bespoke social imaging app, it lets you take and share pics, then “pop” them to the back of your phone. Better yet, the always-on, ultra low-power, black and white display becomes a canvas for notifications, sports scores, maps, lists and notes, all just a glance away.

An open API allows third-party developers to design custom apps for Popslate — including accelerometer support to interact with the backside screen by tapping on it. Imagine a micro e-reader app which uses the E Ink display instead of the main panel to conserve battery.

The company is still in the early stages of development and sadly didn’t have a prototype to show us, but it’s already gathered a team of talented designers, engineers and developers. It’s also secured a partnership with E Ink to use the latest in ruggedized e-paper technology and is hoping to raise enough funds to make Popslate a reality. Two colors are available at launch (black and white) with prices starting at $79 for the first 500 supporters, then $99 and up. Hit the break for the demo video and IndieGogo link.

Cavity Case Holds Your iPhone and Much More

One of my biggest pet peeves is having lots of stuff in my pockets when I am out and about working or playing. I’ve tried a lot of different phone cases over the years that promise to hold the contents of my wallet and my phone, but always gave up on them. The reason I stop using them is that the smartphone cases typically just didn’t hold enough stuff and I still had other items jangling around in my pockets anyhow.

cavity case 1

A case has surfaced on indiegogo that is designed to hold and protect your iPhone 4 or 5 and keep all sorts of other stuff inside as well. The Cavity Case is supposed to hold three keys the size of a typical house key or smaller, an average size car key, a remote control for your keyless entry system, and a telescoping pen.

cavity case 2

That compartment is designed to hold the remote for your keyless entry system also allows you to use that remote without having to remove it from the case. That particular compartment can also be used to store other items such as flash drives, a cigarette lighter or custom round containers which can hold contact lenses or other small items. A pledge of $39(USD) will get you the case and the round containers, while $49 adds on the telescoping pen, and a leather wrist strap.

Spigen Crumena iPhone 5 Leather Pouch Offers Elegant Protection, Despite Its Odd Name

I’ve never really used pouches much for my devices, but I can see the appeal. It cuts down on the bulk of a case, and leaves your gadget devoid of any bulky add-ons when you pull it out to use it. This particular leather pouch looks particularly nice.

The Spigen Crumena pouch is made for the iPhone 5. Its makers use genuine calf skin leather, protecting your precious iPhone from harm, while looking elegant. The inside has a softer liner and a magnetic pull tab that holds your iPhone securely in place. It also makes it easier to access.

You can get the Crumena iPhone 5 pouch from Spigen for $29.99(USD) in brown, black or white leather.

Since most drops tend to happen when you are actually using your phone, I’d still like to see a holster that has enough room to accomodate one inside of a case.

Belkin iPad Mini Keyboard Case: You Knew It Was Coming

I admit that I use a keyboard sleeve with my iPad, and to be honest it makes typing on my tablet a whole lot more productive. Since the iPad Mini was released, it was just a matter of time before a keyboard case for Apple’s smallest tablet would surface.

belkin ipad mini case

Like the larger keyboard cases out there for the orginal iPad, Belkin’s portable keyboard folio for the iPad Mini is supposed to let you type more intuitively. It also makes your iPad Mini look like a tiny netbook, albeit with tiny, but well-spaced keys, allowing touch typists to GTD, no matter where they go. It’s also got some media controls and a rechargeable battery. The folio won’t protect your iPad Mini like some of the more rugged cases out there, but it offers a basic level of protection.

It’s available for $79.99(USD) at Belkin’s online store or on Amazon for $74.99.

FlipType iPhone Case Adds a Tactile Keyboard on the Cheap

While it took me some time to become a fast texter on a touchscreen, anyone who’s had a touchscreen phone knows, that with time, you can type pretty fast on one. That being said, nothing works quite as fast as keys you can actually feel, and this is where the FlipType case comes in.

fliptype keyboard iphone case

The FlipType case was conceived by NOS Design, and it’s supposed to make the on-screen keys on your iPhone easier to use, providing a tactile response from them. The translucent, tactile keyboard flips around from the back of the case, and allows users to instantly transition from a touchscreen device to a keyboard you can feel. One limitation of the design is that it only works in portrait mode, but that’s how most of us type on our iPhones anyhow.

While it’s not the first tactile keyboard overlay for the iPhone, it’s an interesting concept since it’s built into a case, and can be used only when you need it.

ZAGG ProFolio+ iPad Keyboard Case Offers Backlit Keys, Solid Protection

As much as I hate typing on the touch screen of my iPad, I’ve resisted buying an external keyboard for my tablet as I didn’t want to add to the bulk of my svelte Apple gadget. But when I was given the opportunity to test out the ZAGG ProFolio+ keyboard case, I was intrigued – since it’s not only compact, but it offers full wrap-around protection for my iPad.

zagg profolio plus keyboard 1

To help put it to the test, I’m writing this entire review using the ProFolio+ keyboard and my iPad. At its core, the QWERTY keyboard solves the very problem it sets out to. I went from a paltry 34 WPM typing with the on-screen keyboard, to a solid 68 WPM on the ProFolio+ – on the first try – literally doubling my typing productivity. Yes, the keys are little smaller and more crowded than the ones on my desktop computer, but they’re still quite functional, and add a good tactile feel, similar to that found on a MacBook. And I’ve got pretty big fingers, so if I can type on this, anyone can.

zagg profolio plus keyboard 2

Another cool feature of the ProFolio+ keyboard is its backlighting. The keyboard has bright LED backlights which can be set to one of seven colors (my personal fave is the purple – it’s bright and looks cool) and three brightness levels. Simply press the lightbulb key to turn them on, and hold it down with the right or left arrow keys to change colors. Brightness is adjusted by tapping the lightbulb key multiple times. The backlighting is quite effective – in fact I’m writing this entire paragraph in complete darkness with no trouble reading the keys at all. And while the iPad screen itself provides some illumination for keys anyhow, the supplemental backlighting makes them much easier to see – and it just plain looks cool.

zagg profolio plus keyboard 3

Across the top of the keyboard, you’ll also find dedicated function keys for the home screen, search, photo slideshow, cut, paste, copy, media playback and volume, as well as to lock the iPad. Unfortunately, the lock key is a little close to the smaller-than-normal delete key, so I did find myself accidentally pressing it once or twice, but quickly figured out how to avoid it once I realized it was there.

zagg profolio plus keyboard 5

In terms of the case itself, it’s fairly non-descript on the outside, adding a layer of durable black plastic that  snaps onto the back of the iPad. When closed, the keyboard section acts as the front cover, and even has the proper magnets in it to put the iPad to sleep when closed and wake it when opened. When in keyboard mode, the iPad itself sits into a slot (in landscape mode only) providing a good angle for viewing the screen while typing.

zagg profolio plus keyboard 6

And this is where one of my only complaints about the ProFolio+ crops up – it only provides a single viewing angle. I personally found the angle to be a little too vertical for my liking  – but not to the point where it was uncomfortable. It’s just ideal for when you’re typing at eye level. If you try and use the iPad on your lap, the angle isn’t ideal. That said, I would prefer a design with a couple of additional slots, or some sort of mechanism to adjust viewing angle. You also really can’t effectively use your iPad in portrait mode with it, since you can’t rotate the screen while typing, and when you use it without the keyboard, the cover doesn’t flip around to the back, so you have to hold your iPad like a book. The case also adds a full pound of weight to the iPad, with most of that heft being from the battery, I’m sure. That said, the added weight didn’t really bother me. In fact, it just made it feel more sturdy to me.

Speaking of batteries, the ProFolio+ has a built-in rechargeable battery, which can be juiced up via a miniUSB connector, and the included USB charging cable. The keyboard’s battery should last you a couple of weeks between charges with normal usage, though the LED backlight will make things drain quicker. However, it does automatically go into power-save mode if hit hasn’t detected a key press in 60 seconds. There’s a handy power level indicator which can be activated with the push of a key, and it blinks to tell you how much juice you have left, and the backlight is automatically disabled when the battery level drops below 20%.

One other comment on the case itself – at first glance, the textured matte black plastic looks like it would scuff up pretty easily – but I tried pretty hard to mark it with my fingernails and by rubbing at it with no noticeable marks. That’s great, because I’ve had other things made out of a similar material, and they showed scuff marks without too much effort. That said, it does show dust pretty easily, so you may find yourself wiping it down with a damp cloth every once in a while.

zagg profolio plus keyboard 4

Overall, I really like the ZAGG ProFolio+. It adds a full Bluetooth keyboard to your iPad without adding too much bulk, as well as offering solid protection for the tablet. The keyboard itself dramatically improved my typing times from the on-screen keyboard, with the added benefit of extra screen real estate since the touch keyboard is hidden. The LED backlighting is very useful if you find yourself working in a darkened room, and like I said before, it just looks great. However, if you’re looking for a keyboard you can use in portrait mode, or want a wide variety of viewing angles, it might not be for you.

The ZAGG ProFolio+ iPad keyboard is compatible with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th generation iPad, and is available now for $129.99(USD). If you happen to buy one on Black Friday, you could even win a free iPad, as Zagg is giving away a free one every hour on their website, as well as a free pair of earbuds with every purchase over $19.99.
