Engadget Labs: The best mobile broadband carrier in America

When T-Mobile finally decided to join the 3G data card bandwagon earlier this year, we figured it prudent to grab a few sticks from the likes of T-Mob, Sprint, Verizon Wireless and AT&T in order to see which carrier provides the most bang for the buck in the mobile data arena. And trust us, it’s about more than just uplink and downlink rates in 2G / 3G regions these days — it’s about figuring out which operator provides the coverage you need at the price you can afford, all while dodging those precarious overage charges and finding yourself out of luck when traveling overseas. Join us after the break as we delve into the deep, murky realm that is mobile broadband, and prepare to have your every preconceived notion about this stuff utterly destroyed.

HTC Touch Pro2 brandishes Verizon logo, poses for camera with Cedar

Not that it wasn’t without warning, but we’ve now got some pretty definitive picture proof that HTC ‘s Touch Pro2 is set to bask in Verizon’s CDMA goodness — we guess your Sprint friends won’t be having all the fun, after all. Also caught on camera here is the HTC Cedar, a CDMA version of the HTC Maple / Snap. It’s got a slightly different button layout just under the screen than the Sprint version we recently saw, which itself is different from its initial unveiling. According to 474RPR, who leaked these pics, this one’s bound for Alltel’s network, which while we don’t see any proof from the image, we could totally buy that. Of course, none of these pics give a release date of any sort, so hang tight while we all anxiously wait in unison.

BlackBerry Aries spotted: a Gemini with CDMA in its heart

If you had your eye the BlackBerry Curve 8520 / Gemini, somehow above all the other number of RIM devices that have surfaced as of late, it looks like the stars have aligned (har har) for you. The gang at Crackberry have gotten a first peep at the Aries, which they say is essentially a CDMA-equipped Gemini that’s likely to go by the eventual name Curve 8530. Not much else to note here, here’s hoping we got some more concrete details — and maybe a committed carrier or two — in the not too distant. As for the naming conventions, we now anxiously await for alliterative darlings like a touchscreen Taurus, slide-out Sagittarius, and 18 megapixel Pisces.

HTC Snap snapped with larger battery, Sprint insignia, June 7th launch date?

Looks like HTC’s giving Sprint its own version of the Snap, albeit with some slight modifications compared to the T-Mobile variant. According to the snapshots from PPCGeeks, all specs are pretty much identical except for a 1500mAH battery in place of the 800mAH, a revived Inner Circle, and a potentially nonexistent WiFi component. It also looks like the middle unit has been changed to a more traditional d-pad configuration. The forum poster who uploaded the pics claims it’ll launch for a hair under $150 on June 7th, which would be rather odd should another high-profile release date rumor pan out.

Palm Pre definitely coming to Canada on Bell Mobility: 2H 2009

What the CEO wants, the CEO gets — right? Evidently so, as just four months after Ed Colligan proudly stated that he wanted the Pre in Canadian hands, Palm has revealed that the to-be launched handset will indeed grace the cellular airwaves in the Great North. Canucks will have to rely on Bell Mobility (a CDMA carrier, for those unaware) for service, and they’ll have to wait until “the second half of 2009” to indulge. Check the read link to get yourself signed up for notifications, and feel free to start the countdown until 11:59PM on December 31st, 2009.

Motorola’s A4500 world phone caught in the FCC covered in Verizon tattoos

We don’t have a formal unveiling for Motorola’s Verizon-bound A4500 world phone just yet, but an operation manual and some snapshots of its dress rehearsal from the FCC should suffice in the interim. From what we glean, it supports CDMA for VZW’s network and quad-band GSM for SIM-packing Vodafone customers and other overseas roaming needs. No points for design originality (Q9, anyone?), but it does boast a wealth of good features including two megapixel camera, EV-DO, stereo Bluetooth, 2 megapixel camera, Windows Mobile (presumably 6.1), and a biometric fingerprint reader on the back of the phone. Not that we expected you to be eagerly anticipating this one, but we’d venture to say a cameo in the FCC means it’s on track for release some time in the near future.

Microsoft’s “Pink” smartphone could rival iPhone on Verizon

It’s crazy, we know. Just hours after hearing shockingly believable whispers that Apple’s white-hot iPhone 3G could be sashaying over to Verizon Wireless, in flies a Wall Street Journal report asserting that the suits in Redmond are (also?) in talks with America’s largest carrier. ‘Course, we’ve heard rumors that Microsoft was banging out a smartphone behind closed doors for centuries now, but much to our chagrin, there’s no mention of “Zune” in “Project Pink.” Instead, we’re told that said handset is a touchscreen-based multimedia phone that will aim to extend the Windows Mobile OS while “adding new software capabilities.” Not surprisingly, the article also mentions that Windows Marketplace would be front and center on the phone, and potentially most interesting is this tidbit: “a third-party is expected to make the device.” Hey HTC — seen any strange calls originating from the 425?

Nokia heads deeper down CDMA path with FCC-outed dual slider

For better or worse, dual sliders are quickly becoming one of Nokia’s trademark form factors — but one thing we’d never really expected out of Espoo was a dual slider equipped with EV-DO Rev. A. Sure enough, FCC documentation has revealed a diminutive black dumbphone that packs CDMA800 / 1900 with 3G and slides two ways: one to reveal a numeric keypad, the other to offer up music controls. Historically, Nokia has “co-ODM’d” its CDMA devices with an unnamed Asian partner, and we suspect this device is no different — but we’ve got to give them credit for crafting a genuinely Nokia-esque device here. The draft user’s manual doesn’t reveal a retail name or model number, but we do see references to UIMs (the CDMA equivalent of SIMs) and British spellings of “organiser,” which leads us to believe North America might not be on the VIP list for this one. Would be a shame, wouldn’t it?

[Via Phone Scoop]

Update: Commenter Kunal points out that this looks an awful lot like the China-bound 8208, which makes us wonder — why the FCC approval? Did that bad boy pique the interest of Verizon or Sprint?

Second version of HTC Cedar graces FCC with its presence

Remember how the portrait QWERTY Cedar garnered FCC approval a little while back? Yeah, well, forget that ever happened. Actually, don’t — it’s a totally valid approval — but that was the Cedar “200,” and now we’re seeing a Cedar “100” come rolling through. It’s really common for HTC to create multiple versions of the same basic device using the same codename, differentiating them only with different three-digit numbers on the tail end, and that appears to be the case here; both versions of the Cedar are CDMA, so we could be looking at models for Sprint and Verizon, for example. Kinda puts the damper on the “why doesn’t [insert carrier here] get any good phones?” complaint for just a moment, doesn’t it?

HTC Touch Diamond lands tomorrow on Verizon: $299.99 on contract

It seems the rumblings and rumors were true — every last one of them. HTC’s now-aged Touch Diamond is indeed hitting Verizon Wireless this month, bringing with it the same 2.76-inch touchscreen, 3.2 megapixel camera, TouchFLO interface and Windows Mobile 6.1 OS that we’ve seen ad nauseum on carriers around the world (though it does boast a microSD card slot). We’re pretty baffled by the immensely large $299.99 on-contract sticker (after $70 mail-in rebate), and honestly, we just don’t see VZW moving too many of these before a price drop. In fact, are you even giving this a second thought?
