Samsung Delayed Android Upgrade to Sell Phones -Rumor

android_statue.jpg

Yowtch. Android fan site AndroidSpin.com is reporting a rumor from “what [it feels] is a reliable source.” According to said reliable source, Samsung has been purposefully delaying an Android upgrade, in order to get more consumers to buy newer versions of the company’s phones, such as the Vibrant 4G

The report states that Samsung has an update to Android 2.2 Froyo up and ready, but has told T-Mobile not to push it out to existing handset. Says the source,

Some disturbing things have happened the last week or so concerning our “Vibrant”. Samsung has NOT allowed us to push the update OTA for 2.2 because they feel it will decrease the value of the upcoming Vibrant4G +. While from a marketing aspect i totally understand, as the Vibrant 4G is what the original Vibrant should have been in the 1st place. But to shun off and bold face lie to customers is not what T-Mobile is about.

Both Samsung and T-Mobile have yet to respond to the report.

Verizon Wireless Ends “New Every Two” Program

Verizon Wireless - Logo

Verizon Wireless customers could always trust that when their 2-year contracts were up, they would be able to get a discount from Verizon towards the purchase of a new device if they wanted to upgrade. The promotional discount ranged from $50 to $100 depending on the handset the customer wanted.
Verizon has said they’ll end the program this month, and current customers with an upgrade coming will be able to get their discount one last time but then never again.
This means that current customers will have to purchase upgraded phones at the end of their contract for the same pricing that new customers would pay, unless there’s a promotion that only new customers qualify for (in which case existing customers would have to pay the non-discounted price.)
The only good news is that existing customers won’t have to pay full retail price for new phones at the end of their contracts, which for some smartphones can be several hundreds of dollars.

Calling and Driving Could Make You Safer- Report

gizmondo enzo.jpg

Here’s a report sure to raise the ire of safety advocates, everywhere. According to a new study, an increase in the number of people driving while talking on the phone may have actually made us all safer.

The study, conducted by Saurabh Bhargava of the University of Chicago and Vikram Pathania from London’s School of Economics studied 440,000 made by California drivers over 11 days. They found no significant increase in crashes from those drivers using their cells. The study comes as the number of traffic accidents declines, in spite of an increase in those talking while driving.

So, how could “distracted driving” actually make you safer? Bhargava and Pathania have a few theories. First, there’s the fact that drivers are often extra cautious when they pick up the phone behind the while. Also, those who are crappy drivers while talking on their phone may just be crappy drivers in general.

Makes sense, I suppose. It also flies in the face of pretty much everything we’ve ever heard about distracted driving, ever–including a number of laws that have been passed over the past couple of years.

Of course, we can’t really recommend that anyone go out and actually try it–after all, who will keep the Bluetooth headset companies in business?

iPad 2 May Drop Home Button – Report

ipad 2 ces.JPG

Steve Jobs hates buttons. He has said this before. Multiple times. In a very public fashion. In fact, we’re pretty sure that it has pained him that he’s had to feature the Home button on the iPhone, iPod, and iPad–a single aesthetic imperfection that has nearly driven him crazy, like the lead character in some Nathaniel Hawthorne short story.

Well, it seems that the Apple head may finally be able to live his mobile life in a completely button-free bliss. Word from Boy Genius Report is that the company is set to drop the Home button for some future version of the iPad. In fact, the latest version of iOS (4.3) added multitouch gestures for precisely that reason, according to the site’s “sources.”

The disappearing button will eventually make its way to the iPhone as well, according to the aforementioned report. This aesthetic update may or may not make its way onto iOS devices released in 2011.

Case-Mate Announces Verizon iPhone Accessories

It’s been a little over 24 hours since Verizon announced it will be selling the iPhone 4 in February, and the accessories manufacturers are already jumping at the chance to sell their iPhone cases to new Verizon iPhone customers. Just how different will the AT&T iPhone case be from a Verizon iPhone case? That’s yet to be determined. That being said, Case-Mate has announced its line of Verizon iPhone accessories.

Its new line of cases will vary in a range of colors, textures, and materials. They’re not available for sale just yet, but you can sign up to get e-mail updates and arrival notifications when they are.

Some of the cases look familiar, like the Vroom, and the Gelli, but there are many new designs that are sure to tickle your fancy. Personally, I like the Waddler and the Monsta.

T-Mobile “Interested” in iPhone

Philipp Humm.jpg

Now that the country’s two biggest carriers have the country’s biggest smartphone, the question is, who’s next? After years of rumors and speculation, Verizon yesterday announced that it is finally going to offer the iPhone.

So, what about T-Mobile and Sprint. Would they be interested in carrying Apple’s wildly popular handset? In a word, “yes.” T-Mobile USA’s new CEO Philipp Humm told The Seattle Times , “We would be interested in offering the iPhone, but ultimately it is Apple’s decision.” Apple, naturally, didn’t respond to a follow up question.

T-Mobile recently sent out a press invite for an upcoming event. Wishful thinking, perhaps?

Next Version of Android is Actually “Ice Cream Sandwich”

android-dessert-statues.jpg

We know two things about Google’s Android naming conventions. First, they all revolve around dessert foods. Second, they’re all alphabetical. Thus far, we’ve had Cupcake (1.5), Donut (1.6), Éclair (2.0), Froyo (2.2), Gingerbread (2.3), and Honeycomb (3.0).

So, what’s next? Well, we’ve all been calling Android 3.1 (or is it 4.0?) “Ice Cream.” Turns out we’ve all been wrong–or at least incomplete. According to a story up today at TechCrunch, that operating system will actually be named “Ice Cream Sandwich.”

The new name confirmation came from Andy Rubin himself. Says TechCrunch’s Jason Kincaid, “Android chief Andy Rubin told me so. Really, he did.”

The problem with Ice Cream? Apparently it looks to much like Froyo (i.e., frozen yogurt). Since Google has taken to constructing big statues to the dessert of choice on its campus. A giant Ice Cream would just create chaos.

White iPhone Vanishes from Verizon’s Site

Well, that didn’t take long. Roughly an hour or two ago we wondered out loud whether Verizon was getting first dibs on the elusive white iPhone 4. After all, the thing did appear on Verizon’s site.
As we suspected at the time, however, the thing seems to have accidentally been carried over from Apple’s own product page. The image of the white iPhone has since been removed from the page. As you can see from the above and after shots, the spacing of the black iPhone is the same–Verizon seems to have simply deleted the white iPhone from the image.
The latest from Apple has the white version of the popular handset finally hitting the market after months and months of delays. Looks like Verizon customers will have to wait, too.

20 Uses for Your Old AT&T iPhone

Thumbnail image for iphone 4 flat.jpg

After years of rumor and speculation, the Verizon iPhone finally became a reality today. That no doubt means that Verizon customers will renew their contracts by the boatload. The news also likely means that plenty of existing AT&T customers will be abandoning their contracts, in search of better service.

So, once you’ve dumped your AT&T contract and tossed away a few hundred bucks, what to do with your newly bricked iPhone? Well, you could get a few bucks from a reseller, or you could ship it to an electronics recycler.

Boring.

I asked the PCMag staff to come up with a few suggestions for your otherwise unusable handsets.

White iPhone Coming to Verizon?

verizon white iphone.bmp

Okay, this one could just be in the realm of wishful thinking, but could the long awaited white iPhone 4 finally be hitting the market, courtesy of Verizon? Apple first announced the model last year, when it first unveiled the iPhone 4. Since then, however, the white version has been plagued by numerous delays. According to Apple, it’s now due for release this spring.
We’ve heard any number of reasons for the delay–the most feasible is that the lightly colored case lets in too much light, potentially ruining photos. Apple supposedly caught the flaw just before shipping, avoiding a potential repeat of “antennaegate.”
With today’s announcement of the iPhone for Verizon, comes new hope that the white version of the phone will hit market a bit earlier. The above image taken from Verizon’s site seems to lend some validity to this speculation.
It looks, however, like Verizon may have just pulled that info directly from Apple. And even if it does indeed mean that a white iPhone is coming to the service, that doesn’t necessarily mean that it will hit before the AT&T version–after all, in the concern does indeed have to do with photo quality, odds are that it will take Apple just as long to resolve the problem for a Verizon phone.
