Word Lens: iPhone App of the Year?

word lens.jpg

Here’s a belated entry for those of you who are compiling year-end best of mobile app lists. People are tossing around words like “magic” and “future” upon giving Visual Quest’s new app a spin, and we’ve got to say, from demos we’ve seen, we’re pretty impressed.

Word Lens is an augmented reality language translator–hold it up in front of a sign in a different language, and the thing will translate it in real time. All in all, it’s pretty fantastic, and a lot more useful than most of the games and other apps that tend to dominate the iTunes sales lists.

The app itself is free, but there’s $4.99 fee for Word Lens’ various language packs. At present, the app only does Spanish to English and English to Spanish. More languages will be coming soon.

Octavio Good, a developer behind the app explained its process thusly, “It tries to find out what the letters are and then looks in the dictionary. Then it draws the words back on the screen in translation.” Neat.

LG Launching Dual-Core Android Handset

lg_optimus_2x.jpg

Say hello to the world’s first dual-core smartphone. Has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? Sounds like the future. Of course, like most things especially futuristic (at least so far as the mobile world is concerned), there’s no word on when the thing is coming to our shores.

LG’s Optimus 2X is destined for Korea first–launching on that country’s shores in January. Other Asian countries and Europe will be getting their hands on the phone soon after. As for the US–not a peep on that front.

You want specs? How about these specs? The Optimus 2X is packing a 1Ghz NVIDIA Tegra 2 (we mentioned the thing is dual-core, right?), 8GB of memory (expandable to 32GB via microSD, a 4-inch WVGA screen, front and rear facing camera, 1080p video playback, and HDMI mirroring.

Neat.

Comixology Comes to Android

comiXologyAndroidpublishers.jpg

Fellow Android-owning comics nerds–take heart, the popular iPhone/iPad sequential art-reading app Comixology has finally come to Google’s mobile operating system “due to overwhelming demand.”

The app, now available in beta for Android devices running 2.1 and above, features access to more than 2,500 comics (300 of which are free) from 40 publishers, including DC, Image, Vertigo, Oni, and Archie–no word on if or when the company will be introducing an Android version of its popular Marvel iPad app.

Once comics have been downloaded, users can read them on a number of other devices, including the iPhone and PC. The Comixology app can be downloaded now from the Android Market.

Verizon iPhone Would Sell 9 Mil Units in 2011 – Analyst

iphone 4 flat.jpg

The Verizon iPhone isn’t any more real right now than it was a few years ago, but that’s not going to stop analysts from making bold predictions about the phone. The handset, which is currently rumored to be hitting the market at the beginning of next year, will sell nine million units in 2011, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.

That number is 36 percent of the total number of phones he expects Verizon to sell next year. It’s also two million less than the 11 million iPhones he expects AT&T to sell next year. Munster expects most of the new Verizon iPhone buyers to come over from AT&T.

The two carriers will sell a combined 20 million iPhones next year, according to his numbers–more than the 17.5 million he expects AT&T to sell, should the Verizon deal never come to fruition. The analyst told Apple Insider that these numbers “may be conservative.”

According to the report, AT&T will sell a total of 63 million iPhones globally next year–that number is up from 46.3 million in 2010. The number will jump to 78.3 million globally in 2012. Apple and Verizon are both expected to nab 14 million each.

Apple Store in Connecticut Robbed

Greenwich suspect-apple_stores.jpg

A glass door and a store full of high-priced electronics. Sounds like a virtual welcome mat for potential criminals, doesn’t it?

A Greenwich, Connecticut Apple store’s glass door was the latest to get smashed earlier this week. A group of five thieves broke it at around 3 AM yesterday morning, taking tens of thousands of dollars worth of merchandise with them, as they left.

Burglaries have also taken place at Apple stores in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey–the last took place in Woodcliff Lake, New Jersey. On December 6th, four thieves nabbed iPhones, iPod, and MacBooks in 30 seconds and then left–just in time for the holidays.

Li’l Android Stocking Stuffer for Android Lovers

lilandroid.jpgWhat should you get as a Christmas stocking stuffer for the Android lover in your life? How about one of these cute li’l Androids?

At a recent visit to New York City vinyl toy emporium and art gallery My Plastic Heart I found a stock of these $7.50 collectible Android figurines, part of a limited edition created by artist Andrew Bell. The figurines are sold out on Bell’s Web site, but they’re still available through My Plastic Heart’s Web shop.

Bell’s limited-run li’l Androids sell out very quickly; a special “snowman” edition sold out within days. So if you’re an Android fan, I’d snap up these little guys from My Plastic Heart (or any other store where you find ’em) pretty quickly. If they run out, maybe you can go with one of ThinkGeek’s plush Androids.
(Full disclosure: My Plastic Heart, as an art gallery, also shows my wife Leontine Greenberg’s paintings.)

HTC Evo Now Gets Ballistic Protection

BallisticHTCEvo.jpg

Clumsy HTC Evo owners, you don’t need to worry any longer. Now you can wrap your smartphone in five layers of protection with the Ballistic HD. The case is now available for the HTC Evo for a list price of $49.99. What do you get for that steep amount? Layer 1 is a screen protector, layer 2 a shock-absorbent polymer, and layer 3 an impact-resistant polycarbonate shell. Moving outward, layer 4 is a second shock-absorbing polymer and layer 5 a soft silicone outer.

There’s more going on with this case, however, than just extreme protection. It also includes a video stand, a rotating belt clip, and it’s made of water-resistant materials. You can find it in black/black, black/red, and black/gray. To see how tough it is, watch the drop test video. It’ll make you a believer.

Droid 2 Was Dropped, Didn’t Explode – Motorola Employee

droid_2_blood.jpg

Earlier this month, we told you the story of a man in north Texas whose exploding Droid 2 sent him to the hospital, resulting in a blood splattered handset and a face full of stitches.

The man, Aron Embry, told the press, “Once I got to the mirror and saw it, it was only then I kind of looked at my phone and realized that the screen had appeared to burst outward.” He showed off the phone, shattered and covered in blood, a pretty convincing sight as it appeared on the local news.

Things, however, may not be quite what they seem. We got word this morning from a Motorola employee involved with Droid development that the phone may not have exploded at all. The Droid 2 in question “was a phone that got dropped,” the employee told PCMag. “[T]he guy didn’t notice the glass had cracked […]so when he put it to his ear, he cut himself.”

Angry Birds iPhone Cases Make Perfect Gifts

Angry Birds iPhone Case

If there’s someone on your holiday shopping list who simply can’t put down their mobile device because they’re too busy playing Angry Birds, they’ll be thrilled to unwrap an Angry Birds iPhone or iPod Touch case in their stocking this year. The cases are available now for $24.99 list price, and come in three designs: the Red Bird, the Yellow Bird, or the Pig King.
The cases are only available for the iPhone 4 and the newest iPod Touch, and are protective covers for the back of the device, so don’t expect screen protectors or belt clips here. Still, if you want to announce to the world that you’re an Angry Birds fanatic, or you’re buying for someone who is and wouldn’t mind everyone on the subway knowing it, this is the perfect gift.

Angry Birds, Facebook Top 2010 iPhone Apps

Angry Birds Peace Treaty

Apple today released its list of the most popular apps for the iPhone and iPad. Not surprisingly, Angry Birds and Facebook made it out on top this year. Facebook topped the list of free iPhone apps, followed by Angry Birds Lite (the demo version of the popular game), Words With Friends, Skype, and Tap Tap Revenge. The Weather Channel, Rock Band, and Microsoft’s Bing all made the top ten, as well.

Rovio’s popular bird slingshotting title topped the games-heavy paid iPhone app list, followed by Doodle Jump Skee-Ball, Bejeweled 2, and Fruit Ninja. Major League Baseball’s At Bat app was actually the highest grossing iPhone app of the year, followed by Angry Birds at number two.

Over on the iPad side, Apple’s Pages and iBooks topped the paid and free app lists, respectively. Angry Birds HD, Netflix, Pandora, Google, Kindle, and Wolfram Alpha all made the list, as well.
