Nokia Lumia 1520 reaches the UK on December 6th, starting at £80 on a £38 per month plan

Nokia Lumia 1520

Brits who’ve been yearning for the Nokia Lumia 1520 will soon get their chance. The supersized Windows Phone is now due to reach the UK on December 6th, when it will be available through O2 at retail and Vodafone through the web. Third-party retailers like Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u will also stock the 6-inch flagship. While the exact pricing will vary, Vodafone will sell the phone for £80 when it’s attached to a £38 per month plan and a 2-year contract; it will be available for free if you subscribe to a beefy £47 plan. The 1520 will undoubtedly be one of the more expensive handsets in the country, then, but it may be worthwhile for those who want one of Nokia’s most powerful devices.

PanoPal Is An iPhone, Android Accessory That Helps Take Panoramic Shots

Taking a panoramic shot of your current location is something many of us enjoy doing, especially if we’re in a place that is absolutely gorgeous and should be captured in an image. The problem is, if something randomly pops into your photo or if you don’t have the steadiest of hands, it could ruin your panoramic shot, and worse, the entire majestic moment of capturing your beautiful surroundings. That’s why the PanoPal was created. (more…)

HTC One Google Play Edition Android 4.4 KitKat Update Rolling Out

HTC One Google Play Edition Android 4.4 KitKat Update Rolling Out

The HTC One using the Google Camera App

We hear just last week the HTC One Google Play Edition might be receiving Android 4.4 KitKat “soon.” It looks like “soon” came a little sooner than we had anticipated as it’s being reported Android 4.4 KitKat is now rolling out to HTC One Google Edition handsets.

News of the rollout comes from an XDA Developers user who claims they have received the official over-the-air update for the HTC One Google Edition, which means you should start checking your phone as much as possible as you could very well be receiving the update some time soon as well. BlackBerry ousts marketing and operations chiefs, replaces CFO

    Kristian Tear and Frank Boulben

The high-level shakeups aren’t over at BlackBerry just because the company has a new CEO. The company has just let go of Chief Operating Officer Kristian Tear (pictured at left) and Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben (right), both of whom had assumed their roles roughly one year ago. There’s no mention of immediate replacements. The Waterloo firm is also replacing Chief Financial Officer Brian Bidulka with the company’s Compliance head James Yersh; Bidulka will stay on as an advisor for the rest of the fiscal year to ease the transition. CEO John Chen hasn’t provided explanations for the individual departures, but he describes the executive shuffle as necessary for focusing on BlackBerry’s “core strength” in mobile device management. Let’s just hope that Chen is better at engineering a turnaround than his predecessors.

HTC One Google Edition handsets now getting official Android 4.4 KitKat updates

Earlier today, HTC posted the Android 4.4 KitKat kernel source and framework files for the HTC One Google Play Edition, which usually means an official OTA update is imminent. Sure enough, a user on XDA Developers has now reported that he’s received the update the safe way, over-the-air. That means you’ll soon see the more streamlined interface if you’re rocking the Sense-less device, though some waiting may be required if the rollout is staggered. Other benefits you’ll notice will be a better camera app with its own shortcut, improved battery life and more speed overall. Meanwhile, owners of the regular HTC One should get KitKat skinned with Sense in January, at least in the US and UK. If you went for the Google Play Edition, you can check your settings for the update or, if you’re feeling brave, download it at the “More Coverage” link after the break.

Update: Voice activated search using “OK, Google” from the homescreen is only available on the Nexus 5 with the Google Experience launcher. The post has been updated to reflect that.

ZTE’s first smartwatch will only work with its own phones when it launches next year

ZTE Nubia 5 and Grand S to be sold unlocked in US beginning October 16th

Though smartwatches may or may not be selling well, such market conditions aren’t stopping newcomers like Qualcomm and others from entering the game. Now, China’s ZTE has told the WSJ that it’ll launch its own model in the second quarter of 2014 with features similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Gear, but at a lower price. Before you get too excited, the yet-unnamed device will just launch in China at first, and it’ll only be compatible with the company’s own smartphones — like the Nubia Z5 shown above. However, ZTE said it may roll out in Europe and the US later and might also launch future smartwatches that work with any Android device. Though the market for wrist-borne wearables in China is tiny compared to the smartphone segment, ZTE’s mobile marketing chief Lu Qianhao said that launching such a product may give his company’s smartphones a competitive advantage. That may be an unusual marketing ploy, but it could get stranger — the company’s also considering smart glasses and yes, smart shoes.

HTC Announces Gold Colored HTC One

HTC Announces Gold Colored HTC OneWe’ve seen the HTC One being offered up in real gold before; in both 18ct and 24ct options, but what if you wanted a HTC One in gold, but didn’t want to pay the outrageous price for it? Well you’re in luck because it seems that HTC has announced the HTC One in a gold finish. However unlike its other gold plated siblings, this is merely a gold color finish and does not come plated with gold whatsoever, so while it might look like gold, it does not carry the same value, unfortunately. Apart from that the specs are expected to remain exactly the same, which means we can look forward to a 4.7” Full HD display, a quad-core processor, and stereo front-facing cameras with an Ultrapixel camera to top things off.

Gold seems to be a pretty popular finish this days, especially when it was reported that iPhone 5s in gold was the most popular color option, with the gold finish selling faster than the rest. In fact the gold iPhone 5s was selling like hotcakes over in countries such as China and Singapore where gold is considered to be a color that symbolizes fortune and wealth. According to Philip Blair, President of HTC EMEA, “Building on the all metal design of the HTC One, and the recent success of the HTC 18 carat gold MOBO phone, we are excited to have developed our own gold device, offering yet more choice to consumers.” No word on pricing and availability just yet, but given that this is just a gold finish of the regular HTC One, we expect it should be priced similar to normal HTC One handsets.

US Cellular Announces Availability Of Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini For $50

US Cellular Announces Availability Of Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini For $50If you’re planning on picking up a new phone for yourself and you’re a little tight on money, you might be interested to learn that US Cellular has announced the availability of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini on contract for $50, but like we said this is on contract which means that you will be tied to the carrier for the next two years. Alternatively the carrier is also offering the handset off-contract, but for $500 for a Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini? Doesn’t really seem too worth it, doesn’t it?

For those who might have forgotten, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini is essentially a lower specced version of the Samsung Galaxy S4, but keeps its design and comes in a smaller package. It forgoes the 5” Full HD 1080p display in favor of a smaller 4.3” qHD display instead. It will be packing a dual-core chipset clocked at 1.7GHz, an 8MP rear-facing camera, a 1.9MP front-facing camera, and will come in a variety of colors and will also play nicely with 4G LTE networks. It’s definitely not the most powerful phone we’ve seen from Samsung, but we reckon it should be more than enough to get the basic stuff done, so if you’re not after anything too fancy, this should do the trick. So, any takers?

Samsung’s Market Share Takes A Hit In Japan

Samsungs Market Share Takes A Hit In JapanIt is obvious at this point in time that Android is the dominating smartphone platform and commands the largest market share in the world, and that Samsung is probably the leading Android OEM as well, although it seems that Japan might not necessarily be the market that Samsung shines in. According to industry reports, word has it that Samsung’s market share and sales are actually taking a dive over in Japan. From July-September, the reports claim that Samsung has only managed to sell 1 million of its overall portfolio and only took 9.9% of the market.

The reason behind this is partly due to Apple, whose new iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c managed to dominate the market with a 38.1% market share. This is also thanks to Apple’s partnership with NTT DOCOMO, Japan’s largest carrier, who finally got on board the iPhone bandwagon and started to offer the device officially on its network. Coming in second place is Sony who took 18.9% of the market, and the report claims that even Sharp managed to beat out Samsung by 100,000 units. What do you guys think? Why does Samsung appear to have a harder time in Japan than the rest of the world?
