[CES 2014] SensoMotoric Instruments has introduced their brand new SMI RED-n Consumer Eye Control Technology which will target both gaming and computing segments. This particular RED-n eye tracker offers robust, accurate and precise eye tracking technology without taking up too much space at all. In fact, it will arrive with an unprecedented small form factor at a mass market price which will satisfy OEMs and consumer applications. Right now, their technology is already ready and waiting for OEM customers to evaluate it, while the folks over at SMI happen to be working alongside a partner before they are able to announce a general available eye tracking peripheral that will target individual developers and dedicated end user applications sometime in the first quarter of the year.

The next-generation algorithms of the SMI RED-n have been touted to deliver unprecedented robustness and highest accuracy for monitor sizes up to 28”, not to mention being able to handle free head movements in a range of over four times larger compared to the current market available technology. Apart from that, the entire system measures a mere 8mm thin, allowing the RED-n hardware components to be be integrated into just about any device such as tablets, laptops and monitors, and it can also be used as an externally attached eye tracking accessory.

[CES 2014] Not all digital compact cameras are created equal, although at times, I do wonder as to the wisdom of churning out point-and-shoot models considering how the high end smartphone cameras these days are able to deliver pretty decent shots. Well, CES 2014 is the platform for the Panasonic LUMIX DMC-ZS40 to shine, where this particular compact camera will boast of 30x Ultra Zoom capability alongside Wi-Fi and NFC capability, not to mention GPS navigation. Not only that, it comes with a fully flexible manual shooting mode and 60p Full HD video recording capability to boot.

This super slim digital compact camera will feature a LVF (Live View Finder) that boasts of a powerful 30x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 24-720mm) and it will also boast of functions that will help you enjoy a more advanced level of photography including a Control Ring, RAW compatibility and Focus Peaking. Panasonic has also successfully integrated a 24mm ultra wide-angle 30x zoom lens into a slim, flat body and the advanced HYBRID O.I.S.+ (Hybrid Optical Image Stabilizer Plus) that should do its job in eliminating the shaky hands effect whenever you shoot a photo or capture a video. [CES 2014] Toyota, the name behind one of the most successful hybrid car models to date, the Toyota Prius, has just announced that they are working on setting up a network of hydrogen stations which might just feature pumps as well – and the places where such a network will be installed? We are looking at car dealers and perhaps even trash dumps, although the latter does not seem to be too conducive a place to have it. Toyota recently showed off its hydrogen-fueled FCV sedan, which is a concept version of the car Toyota will eventually sell in the US and Japan in 2014, and Bob Carter, Toyota’s U.S. group vice president, said, “We’re throwing everything against the wall. We know we have to push the infrastructure.”

Toyota is not the only vehicle manufacturer in this proverbial boat, as Hyundai Motor Co. as well as Honda Motor Co. too, have their own plans to sell hydrogen cars and crossovers to folks in California. California, after all, has strict state rules that require increasing numbers of “zero-emission” vehicles to be sold each year all the way through to 2025. At time of publishing, California sports approximately 10 public hydrogen fuel pumps, but we are looking at a possible target of another 100 more within the next 10 years.

[CES 2014] Brace yourselves, folks, for another round of digital camera releases at this year’s edition of CES. Canon has just unveiled the new Canon PowerShot N100 to deliver unique storytelling capabilities for photo enthusiasts in a tiny package. This is a new concept camera that will boast of a new body style and unique, new creative options, letting you create as well as relate your visual stories through the enablement of the photographer to become part of the image being captured. How is this possible? Why, with the introduction of a new Dual Capture mode, of course. This would let users simultaneously capture special moments using the Main Camera, and there is the Story Camera, which happens to be a rear facing sub-camera, that will shoot you as well, embedding your picture into the main image eventually.

Not only that, the Story Highlights mode will intuitive create a highlight reel of images and video so that a customized movie is created, as it depicts a story as seen through the photographer’s eyes. Forget about using complex software to assemble such footage, although you can be sure that it will be an extremely bare bones example, and any other third party software should be able to perform a far more complex job than this. Other hardware specifications include Wi-Fi capability, a 5x optical zoom, a 24mm Wide-Angle f/1.8 lens, a 12.1-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor. Expect the Canon PowerShot N100 to arrive this May for $349.99 a pop in white or black shades. [Press Release]
