[CES 2014] I am quite sure that many of us were fascinated by the idea of Nabaztag when it was first unveiled quite a fair number of years ago. It seems that 2006 is a long time off now, and here we are in 2014 with something from the creator of the Nabaztag. Rafi Haladjian is the person of the moment here, and the latest creation would be known as Mother, which is actually a spooky looking white colored plastic Russian Doll that will be connected to a bunch of sensors known as cookies.
These cookies will then be able to perform various measurements, including those of motion and temperature, and based on the readings collected, they can alert you whenever it notices a change. For example, should you strap a cookie to the door where your medication is kept, but somehow or rather forgot to open it when you were due, the device would continue to nag you – just like mother did (hence its name, I suppose) until you do something about the situation. It remains to be seen just how popular something like Mother would eventually end up, as the Nabaztag did not exactly ring up phenomenal sales figures in the first place.

[CES 2014] Belkin might have made a name for itself in the world of networking devices over the years, but this does not mean that the company does not have different kinds of concerns elsewhere. In fact, this time around, we have the introduction of the Belkin Crock-Pot Smart Slow Cooker, which is a slow cooker that allows you to control as well as monitor cooking times and temperatures using your smartphone. Yup, the smartphone has just gotten a whole lot smarter I guess, but it remains to be seen whether consumers are willing to fork out additional money to upgrade the appliances in their home that will be able to meet the expectations of a new generation.
After all, a slow cooker might be smart as all get out, but if you still fail as a cook and even burn your kettle as you boil water, it ain’t gonna do much. Still, being able to expand home automation features is a nice way of moving along forward, and who knows? Smart appliances will eventually gain acceptance among the masses in time to come. Do you think that the $99 asking price is too high, considering it is double that of a normal Crock-Pot?

Sphero 2B Introduced
Posted in: Today's Chili[CES 2014] We have seen the robotic sphere known as Sphero introduced in the past, and right now, Orbotix, the ones behind the Sphero, have decided to make some modifications to it by elongating the Sphero into a tube that is similar in nature to a cylinder, all the while lowering the price point to touch $99 a pop, to make it a really interesting toy. Too bad the mad holiday shopping season is already over to gauge whether the Sphero 2B is really able to make an impact or not, but I guess at the very least, we will be able to have some sort of benchmark to fall back on as it is released to the masses later this year.
The Sphero 2B is said to be twice as fast as the current model, and we cannot wait for Fall to arrive as that is when it will hit the market. You will be able to launch the Sphero 2B using high-speed tricks and jumps, and since it comes in a tubular design, it will also exhibit a great degree of agility. Not only that, customizable tires as well as accessories would be able to make anything possible with the Sphero 2B. There are also advanced multiplayer games to enjoy with the Sphero 2B, and being fully programmable, it lets you embrace your inner hacker. The Sphero 2B will play nice with iOS or Android devices over Bluetooth LE, and it will be powered by USB charging capability with a durable polycarbonate body to boot. [Product Page]

[CES 2014] A stylus goes down pretty well with your smartphone or tablet, even more so if you are one who cannot bear the sight of fingerprints on your mobile device. Not only that, a stylus works a whole lot more accurately compared to your finger during those tense moments when you need to get the exact pixel touched or selected. Qualcomm, more famous for their mobile chips than anything else, has taken the plunge into a different world – by churning out a stylus which is able to play nice with a smartphone or tablet sans wires, using sound alone.
It sounds (pardon the pun) like magic, but in reality, it is actually plain old technology being put to good use. Known as the Qualcomm Ultra Sound NotePad, the demonstration video that you view above will depict just how a device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 805 processor as well as a set of special microphones are able to “listen” for vibrations which are made by a pen. Best of all is, this pen does not even need to touch the screen, but rather, to be near it. I admit, it will feel pretty weird at first since we are all infinitely more familiar with grasping a stylus as it dances across a touchscreen, but barriers are always meant to be broken. In a nutshell, you can now write notes, draw pictures, or doodle on a sheet of paper that is located next to your tablet, only to see it replicated digitally. This is still a proof-of-concept, and it might never make it to the real world. Only time will tell.
