LaCie Sphere Is A Stylish Looking Hard Drive

LaCie Sphere Is A Stylish Looking Hard Drive[CES 2014] External hard drives and USB flash drives are something we don’t necessarily think too much about in terms of design. However LaCie is a company that has not been shy about styling their products as we have seen them collaborate with Porsche on hard drives before, which is why it is not surprising, and somewhat of a delight, to see LaCie announce a new external hard drive in the form of the Sphere. As the name and the photos indicate, this is a hard drive that is atypical in design and spherical in shape, courtesy of a design collaboration with Christofle, a French luxury brand that is known for their work with silver. LaCie Unveils Fuel External Hard Drive For iOS And Mac

LaCie Unveils Fuel External Hard Drive For iOS And Mac[CES 2014] If there is a drawback to using iOS devices is that storage is usually fixed, meaning that if you chose a 16GB iPhone but ran out of space, you’re pretty much stuck unless you decide to buy a new phone with a larger capacity. Granted one could turn to cloud alternatives such as iCloud, Dropbox, or stream music instead of storing it on their iDevices, but where’s the fun in that? For those who don’t mind carrying a little extra, LaCie has announced the Fuel external hard drive designed for iPhones, iPads, and Mac computers in mind, basically giving iOS and Mac users an additional 1TB of storage.

Liquid Image Unveils Hydra Diving Mask With Video Recording Capabilities

Liquid Image Unveils Hydra Diving Mask With Video Recording Capabilities[CES 2014] Not everyone can scuba dive as this requires the diver to undergo a series of lessons and a test before they are certified, and for those who have been certified, what better way to commemorate your diving experience by taking photos and videos of your dive, right? There are plenty of waterproof cameras and handycams out there, but for a true hands-free experience, Liquid Image has announced their Hydra series of camera masks, which are essentially diving goggles that comes with a small camera attached to the side, allowing you, the diver, to snap photos and capture videos without the need to lug around and additional device. The Ego LS Is A Wearable Camera With 4G LTE Connectivity

The Ego LS Is A Wearable Camera With 4G LTE Connectivity[CES 2014] Cameras designed to be worn and used in sports is not new. We’ve seen many of them in the past, such as the GoPro which is a pretty popular name when it comes to such devices. Well if you’re in the market for something similar for your next action-packed holiday or event, perhaps Liquid Image might be a company worth considering, especially with the announcement of the first 4G LTE enabled wearable and mountable camera in the form of the Ego LS, which the company expects to demonstrate come CES 2014 which will be taking place in a few days’ time.

The Ego LS, in terms of being a camera, is more or less standard and has the ability to record videos in WQVGA quality at 30fps, as well as being able to snap photos in low or high resolution. What makes the Ego LS particularly unique and interesting is that it comes with a 4G LTE module that allows users to hook onto 4G LTE networks (requires a SIM) in which they are able to utilize their internet connectivity to transfer videos and photos onto their mobile device through an accompanying app, as well as the ability to deliver a live video stream of their footage as it takes place.

Of course for those who don’t see the need for 4G LTE, Liquid Image has a regular model which does come with WiFi and Bluetooth, essentially offering the same features, just minus the convenience of a mobile network. Both the LTE and non-LTE versions will be priced the same at $199.99, with the main difference being its battery life, with the LTE model expected to use more battery. The Liquid Image Ego LS camera will be available come June 2014.

Mysterious Computer Chip Crop Circle Is An Nvidia CES Publicity Stunt [Update: Confirmed]

    Nvidia Crop Circle

An intricate crop circle recently cut into a field two hours south of San Francisco baffled onlookers and spawned crackpot theories that aliens were responsible, but sources tell me it was created by Nvidia to publicize a big CES announcement. [Update: Nvidia confirms.] The design looks like Nvidia’s Tegra 4 chip, and though we can’t confirm this, it may be designed to drum up interest in the Tegra 5 chip Nvidia is expected to launch at CES.

Nvidia has a major CES press conference planned for tonight at 8pm PST in Las Vegas where it may fess up to creating the crop circle and is likely announce details of its new products.

[Update 6:30pm PST: Nvidia has confirmed it created the crop circle by adding this teaser image to its website.]

    20140105-183752.jpg

The Tegra is a “system on a chip” for mobile devices that combines a CPU, GPU, and memory controller. The new Tegra 5 Nvidia is expected to show off at CES is codenamed “Logan”, and will likely be faster and more energy-efficient than the Tegra 4 “Wayne” predecessor Nvidia showed at CES last year. Alternatively, the crop circle could related to the new Maxwell GPU Nvidia may unveil.

    Tegra-4

The crop circle appeared in the farming town of Chualar, California on the morning of Monday, December 30th. It was pressed into a field owned by a farmer named Scott Anthony who was out of town. On Tuesday, he ordered a crew to plough the crop circle, erasing it to the dismay of small crowds who had flocked to see it. You can see more footage of the crop circle and watch local news anchors’ hilariously misguided attempts to decode what it is in the embed below.

As tech companies battle it out for press at overcrowded conferences like CES and SXSW, publicity stunts are getting more and more ridiculous. Last year’s CES saw the typical, demeaning booth babes and free swag, but also paintball shooting galleries while SXSW parties featured celebrity performances from Justin Timberlake and Prince.

You could call these stunts signs of an indulgent tech bubble, but as gadgets and apps gain more and more mainstream appeal, there’s big money to be made in owning a moment with some theatrics. If Nvidia can sell more chips, it could easily make up for whatever the crop circle cost.

Huawei Ascend W3 Expected To Be Unveiled At CES

Huawei Ascend W3 Expected To Be Unveiled At CES

There are a handful of OEMs out there that currently manufacture Windows Phone powered smartphones. Nokia takes the greater share, trailed by Samsung and HTC. It was feared that OEMs won’t be too happy with Microsoft’s acquisition of Nokia’s hardware business, but they appear to be sticking with the platform for now. Huawei released a WP device, the Ascend W2, in mid-2013 and now its expected to release a new one in the very near future. If rumors are to be believed, we might get to see one at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2014.

The Huawei Ascend W3 is believed to be the Ascend W2′s successor, which was a mid-range Windows Phone device. Ascend W3 is expected to stick to these roots and offer a 720×1,280 pixel resolution display in an aluminium body that may look similar to the Ascend P6. Additional hardware specifications haven’t been rumored, so we’ll just have to wait and see what it touts under the hood come CES 2014, that is if Huawei ends up unveiling it. The smartphone will reportedly come with the latest GDR3 update of Windows Phone 8 pre-installed. Information about pricing and availability is scarce right now, but lucky for us, CES 2014 isn’t that far off.
