TomTom Go Series with TomTom Traffic

TomTom Go Series with TomTom TrafficTomTom has already updated its GPS lineup Go series in Europe back in April and today, the company launched the new TomTom Go Series with TomTom Traffic in the US.

The most significant update is the total re-thinking and re-design of the user interface, and from the screen shots I saw, it looks really promising: everything looks sleeker and nicer, the color scheme is much more harmonious and all the information looks easier to access from the main screen than on the past generation. One key feature I really like is the route bar located on the right side of the screen which lets users see what is coming on the road ahead of time. The software update is really a great improvement (on the paper) over the last generation of Go devices launched at CES 2011.

On the hardware side the key update is the absence of internal 2G/Edge cellular radio, you need to pair your TomTom Go over Bluetooth with your smartphone where you download the companion Traffic app (iOS and Android).

Samsung has world’s largest 110” UHD TV in tow

samsung-uhdtvIt seems that owning a TV alone is not good enough these days, as one would do well to have a TV that is large in size. After all, there is nothing quite like having the feeling of bringing in the cinema experience to the living room, is there? Samsung intends to lead the way with the introduction of what they deem to be the world’s largest 110” UHD TV over at CES 2014. Also known as the 110S9, this Samsung device is the world’s largest commercial Ultra High Definition TV, where it will sport some of Samsung’s innovative technologies including the Quadmatic Picture Engine that is touted to deliver unrivaled picture quality on 110S9’s 110” UHD screen, which would then bring to life its 800-megapixel display. We are talking about more than four times the number of pixels on a Full HD TV here, people.

Samsung expects to see additional demand grow for the 110” UHD TV market segment, where apart from rich folks who have way too much money to spare and spend, other clients would include government institutions, agencies and companies from around the world who want to have that “Wow!” factor when it comes to beautifying their offices and impressing all who step in.

This particular TV will arrive in the new rich markets of China, the Middle East, and Europe later this month, and you can bet your bottom dollar that folks from China as well as the Middle East will find it to be not an issue in purchasing one, or perhaps even two of these bad boys. After all, those are the places where the nouveau rich reside, and it is not out of their character to splurge just because they can. Needless to say, pricing details have yet to be revealed, but in this case, if you have to ask, you probably cannot afford it.

Apple’s iBeacon Technology To Be Used In Scavenger Hunt At CES 2014

Apples iBeacon Technology To Be Used In Scavenger Hunt At CES 2014Apple has not attended CES for years, more than a decade even, but it seems that despite not being there physically, their presence will definitely be felt come CES 2014 as the event organizers have announced that they plan to hold a special scavenger hunt that will utilize Apple’s iBeacon technology which will introduce to both exhibitors and attendees to Apple’s new location-aware technology which the Cupertino company has recently introduced to its own retail stores to help guide customers through their stores, which on any given day tends to be bustling not just with staff, but with potential customers as well.

So why use iBeacon and promote Apple’s technology despite the fact that they aren’t actually there? Well the event organizers are hoping that come CES 2014, attendees will explore more and check out the different exhibitions available, as opposed to congregating mainly at big-name companies, which we guess will help smaller companies gain some exposure as well. After all some of the best gadgets of our lifetime came from small and humble beginnings. Powering the game will be technology from Radius Networks which will utilize low-energy Bluetooth technology from Texas Instruments.

Considering that iBeacon is Apple’s technology, this scavenger hunt will be the first time commercial implementation of iBeacon will include Android devices. According to CEA’s SVP of communications and strategic relationships, Jeff Joseph, “This promotion is a fun and novel way to introduce attendees to iBeacon technology and encourage participants to visit important exhibits across the show floor.” How well will it be implemented and received remains to be seen, but it does sound like a fun idea.
