Samsung Teases Exynos Announcement For CES 2014

Samsung Teases Exynos Announcement For CES 2014A few months ago, Apple announced the iPhone 5s which shocked the world not because of its design or its features, but rather an industry first for smartphones thanks to the A7’s 64-bit chip that made its way into the device. It wasn’t too long after that that companies such as Samsung revealed that they were also working on 64-bit chipsets and it seems that these chipsets could debut as soon as CES 2014. This is thanks to a recent tweet by Samsung on their Exynos Twitter account, where they posted the picture above in which the tagline reads, “Flying even higher in 2014”, suggesting that we could see new Exynos technology at CES 2014.

At this point it remains unknown as to what Samsung might have up their sleeves, but there is a possibility that whatever announcement Samsung plans to make, it could be related to the company’s 64-bit chipset, which seems to be in line with what we have heard. Will the 64-bit Exynos chipset make its way into the Samsung Galaxy S5? The rumors seem to be pointing towards that, along with how it would make sense for Samsung to do so as well, if they want to compete with Apple’s iPhone 5s. In any case Samsung’s Exynos 5 series of octa-core chipsets made their debut back in January of 2013, so it wouldn’t be out of the question for Samsung to announce the next big thing around the same time next year as well.

Meizu MX4G Rumored To Come In Two Variants

Meizu MX4G Rumored To Come In Two VariantsWe have been hearing rumors that Meizu is planning a successor to its Meizu MX3 smartphone in the form of the Meizu MX4G, a device which looks like it will be getting a 2K display of its own and pack a pixel density of over 500ppi. While it seems that 2K displays on smartphones are starting to become the standard of 2014, new rumors have surfaced suggesting that the Meizu MX4G might come in more than one variant, with the high-end model expected to be known as the Meizu MX4 Pro. So what’s the difference in models, you ask?

Well if the rumors are true, there will be two models: an ultra high-end model, and a high-end model. The ultra high-end model is expected to sport the rumored 2K display, while the high-end model will instead use a Full HD 1080p display which has more or less become the standard of smartphone displays in 2013. The high-end model is also rumored to be powered by MediaTek’s octa-core processor, and we can only assume the same will apply to the ultra high-end model as well.

The rumors are also claiming that one of the models will feature a Lytro-like camera system which allows users to shoot photos first and tweak its focus after. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but we have heard the announcement by Meizu on how they plan to enter the US market and will debut their products at CES 2014.

Could Sony Be Debuting A VR Headset At CES 2014?

Could Sony Be Debuting A VR Headset At CES 2014?When it comes to virtual reality headsets, the most popular name at the moment would be the Oculus Rift, but it looks like Sony could be looking to steal its thunder come CES 2014 with a virtual reality headset of their own. The headset was rumored to make a debut at the Tokyo Game Show 2013, but safe to say it did not materialize, and now if the rumors are to be believed, and if Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida’s tweets are any indication, said headset could debut at CES 2014.

Yoshida’s tweet was a response to IGN executive editor’s Scott Lowe’s tweet where he posted a photo of a virtual reality headset, claiming that it was the best thing to come out of CES 2011, a good two years ago. Yoshida’s tweet while not confirming anything, states that we can expect to see a newly announced product at CES 2014. This has led to speculation that a Sony VR headset could debut at the event, after all why would Yoshida respond to a tweet if said product was unrelated, right?

In any case it’s pretty much up in the air at the moment, but as we will be live at CES 2014, be sure to check back with us then for all the details. We could be looking at a prototype, or we could be looking at a brand new product, but either way exciting times are ahead of us!

Having said that, Avegant is more than proud to unveil their beta consumer concept of the Virtual Retinal Display which is given the name Glyph. The Consumer Electronics Startup Show

    ces2

The size and scope of the Consumer Electronics Show is unfathomable for the uninitiated. CES has been called a cesspool. It’s been called a shitshow. And those descriptions are accurate. It’s a clusterfuck of consumer electronics companies, big and small, vying for attention. That’s why TechCrunch attends.

For the 2014 show, which is just two short weeks away, TechCrunch is, for the first time, breaking out its Startup Battlefield event from Disrupt. Called Hardware Battlefield, this startup competition has been tweaked and reworked to focus on, and celebrate, the brightest and most promising unlaunched hardware startups. And what better place to host it than CES?

CES is the largest startup show in the world, and to say that it takes over Las Vegas is not hyperbolic. The city is consumed by CES: Nearly every hotel room is booked; almost every conference room is used. For every Samsung and Microsoft, there are at least 100 smaller companies — the best and brightest of which often do not have an official spot on the CES show floor.

For years, CES has been held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. This massive facility has four exhibition halls nearly large enough to hold air shows within. But in recent years, with the LVCC bursting at its seams, the show expanded next door to the Hilton, The Venetian and Palazzo. If that’s not enough, companies and startups often save a bunch of cash, forgoing the traditional CES experience and rent suites in other casinos. Then there are hackathons, press events, and more lame parties than one can possibly attend.

    CES1

CES is not for us, the press or the average consumer. It’s a show for buyers and exhibitors. It’s a show for innovators and salespeople. It’s a show for the consumer electronics industry. Yet, year after year, the tech press shows up with trailers and broadcast booths, attempting to boil down this overly complex show to a consumable morsel.

TechCrunch attends CES not to reblog press releases and help Samsung announce its latest tablet. We attend the show to find the next big thing. For 2014′s show, we’re sending more writers, editors and video personnel than ever before. Our broadcast booth is bigger than last year’s. And I’ve created more CES planning spreadsheets than I would like to admit.

We’re even holding a startup competition this year.

Just like its Startup Battlefield counterpart, our Hardware Battlefield will pit startups against each other for a chance at a $50,000 cash prize. We have amazing judges and 16 companies from around the world. This happens twice a day at our broadcast booth. Show up to watch it in person (here’s our booth) or follow along live thanks to Ustream.

I predicted 2013′s show to be the year of the gadget startup. And I was dead-on. It was the first CES of the modern era without Microsoft. Nokia, Dell and HP were skipping the show. The year before that was the noisiest CES in recent memory. CES was headed into a wall. But startups saved the show.

Over the last few years gadget startups have risen in prominence. Once hampered by long development cycles and poor designs, thanks to crowdfunding and understanding venture capitalists, hardware startups can now operate nearly as lean as web-based companies.

Best yet, countless startups have risen out of the ashes of the consumer electronic wasteland to help consumers turn ideas into companies. As John explained, 2014′s CES will be the year of the maker.

    ces

Planning this year’s CES was a daunting task. There are just so many companies within TechCrunch’s scope of coverage attending the show. Best of all was scanning the map of the show floor and spotting companies like GoPro and Parrot, once tiny companies, doing the show big with sizable booths in prominent locations.

If you or your company are headed to CES, we would love to talk. Stop by our booth in the LVCC Central Plaza to watch the live interviews, shows and competitions. We’re the booth circled in red here.

The folks behind CES, the CEA, fully understand that the show is on the cusp of turning into something different. They have made moves to make the show more accessible to smaller companies, creating special venues to better suit the needs of the startup. Of course adding more exhibit space does not address the bloated feeling of CES. As before, it will seem overwhelming and excessive but still exciting and magical in its own special way — especially to the startup attending CES for the first time.

Samsung jumps aboard the curved Ultra HD TV bandwagon

samsung-curved-hdtvSamsung might be from the same country as that of LG, hailing from South Korea, but this does not mean that they are bosom buddies when it comes to sharing customers in the consumer electronics arena. Samsung has laid claim that they have on offer a world’s first, which is also the largest and most curved 105-inch Curved UHD TV ever, and this bad boy will be unveiled over at CES next year. Next year is not too far away actually, especially when you consider that CES 2014 is happening in January next year.

Your eyes will definitely be blown away by what the Samsung 105-inch Curved UHD TV is able to deliver, as it will make use of a new proprietary picture quality algorithm which is capable of offering optimized color and greater feeling of depth. In a nutshell, you will be treated to nearly two times vivid images when viewed from the side, and it comes with 11 million pixels (that’s 5120 X 2160 for you) screen resolution alongside a 21:9 aspect ratio.

Samsung’s 105” Curved UHD TV is touted to be the world’s most curved, it comes with nearly two times vivid images when viewed from the side, offering you the best possible TV viewing experience from any angle. Apart from that, the 105 inch monster will also make use of its ‘Quadmatic Picture Engine’ that will be able to offer up UHD-level picture quality regardless of what kind of source it hails from.

Pricing details and other hardware specifications remain to be seen, but if the past few editions of CES is anything to go by, this could very well lead to the first generation of many curved Ultra HD TVs down the road. Unless Japanese companies like Mitsubishi and Panasonic have nothing like this up their sleeves in January, we do expect to see them jump aboard the bandwagon in CES 2015.
