CES 2009: Ozaki iMini Pets Singing Animal and Politician iPod Docks

obamaozaki.gif

There are always a couple of off-beat hits every CES, and it doesn’t come much more off-beat than Ozaki’s line of iMini Pets, little animatronic stuff animals that sit on top of an iPod speaker dock. The pets grove and lip sync to the music from your iPod. The dock features an on/off sleep system, dual alarm, and a 27 x 59 mm LCD display.

On display at the show this week were the Jazz Panda, Rock Lion, Rap Frog, Classic Bear, and House Dog. Oh, and, uh, Barack Obama, too. Yep, the presiden-elect was on the showroom floor today, grooving alongside the pets. That’s change we can all groove to.

Check out a video of the pets–and Obama–dancing to “Don’t Worry, Be Happy,” after the jump.

VAIO P in-depth impressions

Yeah, we saw this when it first hit the FCC, nabbed blurrycam spyshots before the debut, got the drive-by snaps of the laptop at launch, and pitted this thing against an assortment of laptops the other night, but now that we’ve finally gotten some quality time with the thing, we’ve got a better idea of what the VAIO P is — and isn’t — capable of, outside of inspiring deep, deep gadget lust and nerdy debates about netbook terminology. Check out our thoughts and some video after the break.

CES 2009: The Other iCap–an MP3 Player for Your Head

icap2.gif

I can’t say I’m surprised, really, but a few minutes after looking at that other iCap, I came across this one from Gesten Technologies. Fortunately for both companies, beyond the name, people aren’t likely to confuse the two devices. As part of the longstanding CES tradition of shoving MP3 players into everything, the iCap shoves on into the bill of a baseball cap.

The iCap doesn’t stop there, however, it also features two speakers, a display, an FM tuner, and a voice recorder. The player has 1GB of built-in memory and a Micro SD card slot. The idea here is to replace headphones, which tend to drown out the wearer’s surroundings.

The iCap snaps straight onto the bill of your hat. It retails for $119.95.

CES 2009: ThermaPAK Keeps Your Laptop Cool

thermapak.gif

Here’s a cool little computer accessory–literally. Created by ThermaPAK, the Heatshift is a battery-free cooling pad for your notebook.

Rather than relying on fans, the Heatshift has passive heat dissipation, thanks to a crystalline core than slowly changes from solid to gel. According to the company, when the pad is not in use, the material shifts back the other way, giving the Heatshift a longer shelf life.

The ThermaPAK people gave me a sample unit, whcih is currently sitting under my MacBook–a notoriously hot running computer. The pad seems to be doing the trick.

ThermaPAK also has a laptop bag that utilizes the HeatShift.

CES 2009: iCap is a Sun Visor for Your GPS

Here’s another contender for the most useless product of CES International 2009: the iCap. Designed by Korean-based ISTT, the iCap is a sun visor–for your GPS device.

The device clips on top of your GPS navigator to keep the glare of direct sunlight off of the screen. The iCap comes in 4.3-, 3.5-, 7, 4.8, and 7-inch sizes, with about a half-dozen color varieties in each size.

Sony Cyber-shot DSC-G3 WiFi camera reviewed: wait for generation two

WiFi cameras are far from new — over the past couple of years, we’ve seen P&S after P&S arrive with minimal functionality that would allow it to sync pictures with one specific online photo portal (or similar). Sony has stepped up the game for cameras to come with the Cyber-shot DSC-G3, which is the first of its kind to include a web browser for logging into pay-hotspots and uploading to practically any photo sharing site on the web. Popular Science got to handle one for a few weeks, and in the end, they were in love with the idea but hesitant to praise the execution. The T700-turned-wireless took satisfactory pictures, but the browser experience was less than awesome. You can hit the read link for all the dirty details, but unless you’re willing to deal with “agonizingly” slow load times, you’re probably better off waiting for the next revision. Or for some other company to whip out a bona fide competitor.

Video: Casio’s Crazy-Fast 1000-FPS Digicam

Casio’s new Exilim FC100 is all about the speed. The sleek brushed metal digicam can capture video at up to 1000 frames per second, full-size 9-megapixel stills at a ridiculous 30 fps and it can even slow down time itself — the camera has a mode which shows a slo-mo version of the real world on the LCD screen so you can pick the precise moment to fire the shutter. All this for $400. Available in March.
