Huawei Ascend Mate previewed: 6.1″ Full HD phablet takes on Note II

Huawei’s star of CES 2013, the Ascend Mate “phablet” has been given a pre-show reveal, with none other than the company’s own devices chief whipping out the 6.1-inch oversized smartphone at a Huawei store in China. Tipped for imminent reveal, the Ascend Mate is expected to pair its bigger-than-a-Note-II display with a 1.8GHz HiSilicon K3V3 quadcore processor, with Huawei unsurprisingly opting for a sizable battery too: 4,000 mAh is what’s expected.

Exec Richard Yu didn’t detail the exact specifications, according to the Sina Weibo report, but it’s certainly enough to take the sting out of Huawei’s big reveal in a couple of weeks time. The Ascend Mate is believed to measure a reasonably-waifish 9.9mm thick – slightly more than the 9.4mm Note II, but impressive nonetheless.

According to Yu’s comments on the Chinese site, the Ascend Mate will use a low-temperature polysilicon (LTPS) display, running at 1080p Full HD resolution for an impressively Retina-busting pixel-density of 361ppi. 2013 is shaping up to be the year of the Full HD phone, with devices like the DROID DNA paving the way for a Full HD push from Samsung and others.

Huawei has made its name with low-cost devices, and the Android-powered Ascend Mate is shaping up to be competitively priced, too: under 3,000 yuan, in fact, or around $481. We’ll know all the details when we head to CES 2013 in just a couple of weeks time.

Huawei’s 6.1-inch 1080p Ascend Mate flaunted by exec, leaves little surprise for CES

Huawei's 61inch 1080p Ascend Mate flaunted by exec, leaves little surprise for CES

How big is too big? Well, that’s clearly not Huawei’s concern, as it’s about to introduce a 6.1-inch 1080p Android phone at CES. But even two weeks (before the company’s CES press day) is too much for the impatient Richard Yu, who went ahead and whipped out his beastly device in front of fans at a Huawei store in Guangzhou yesterday — there’s a video of the intimate moment after the break. According to earlier rumors, the Ascend Mate will feature a 1.8GHz HiSilicon K3V3 quad-core chip, along with a massive 4,000mAh battery, 9.9mm thickness and a price tag of just under ¥3,000 (about $480). Yu wrote on Sina Weibo saying the final specs may differ slightly, but the 43-year-old executive did add that the 361ppi display is of LTPS (low temperature polysilicon) nature. As with the Ascend W1 and the Ascend D2, all will be unveiled at CES.

ZTE’s 5-inch 1080p Grand S leaked, teased and confirmed for CES debut

ZTE Grand S product shot leaked ahead of CES debut

Earlier today a kind anonymous tipster shared the above product shot of a ZTE Z753, which is allegedly the Chinese manufacturer’s contribution to the ever-growing list of five-inch 1080p devices — including those from HTC, Sharp, Oppo and eventually Nubia, Huawei, Lenovo plus Sony. Conveniently, ZTE’s also been teasing its upcoming Grand S flagship on Sina Weibo ahead of its CES debut, and we’ve been able to confirm that this is indeed the aforementioned Z753 — not that we don’t already know the Grand S’ main selling points thanks to a brief description on CES’ website: “the world’s thinnest for 5 inch FHD smartphones.” There isn’t much information about the guts at this point, but we do know that the phone will feature a unibody design, along with a slight bump around the off-center camera on the back. Until we make it to CES next month, you can see more in the official sketches after the break, courtesy of ZTE’s Sina Weibo account.

Polaroid Mirrorless Android Camera to Be Unveiled at CES 2013

It’s been confirmed that Polaroid will unveil an Android-powered, mirrorless, interchangeable-lens camera, at CES 2013. While I would have liked for Polaroid to announce that they will continue making old-school instant cameras, this isn’t bad news.

polaroid im1836

The rumor mill says that the Polaroid IM1836 will have an 18.1-megapixel sensor, and a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen. It was also said that the camera will include a pop-up flash, Wi-Fi, an HDMI output, a 10-30mm lens and will use MicroSD. There aren’t many more details available, but hopefully we’ll get more information after the new year, or perhaps even some sneaky bits during the holidays. Most of Asia is working during Christmas, after all.

There’s no word yet on what the price point will be for the camera.

Samsung Trailer Drops Hints Of Future Devices At CES 2013

As you get older, don’t you feel that time does seem to pass faster than expected? Well, that is how we felt things are at this point in time. In fact, it did not feel too long ago that CES came and went, and here we are in December 2012, preparing ourselves for our annual pilgrimage to Las Vegas for CES 2013, jostling with thousands of other journalists and attendees to check out the latest and greatest in the world of consumer electronics. Well, Samsung has just released a spanking new trailer that takes up 18 seconds of your life, where it reminds the world that “something new” is waiting in the wings, with all being revealed at CES 2013.

Could it be the slew of flexible displays that Samsung has hard been at work on for the past couple of years, or perhaps the Samsung Galaxy S4 might be delivered prematurely in order to deliver a pre-emptive strike against any iPhone 5S or iPhone 6 talk. What do you think that Samsung has up their sleeves for CES that is happening next month?

Sony to unveil new Alpha products at CES 2013

If you’re looking forward to some new Alpha goodies from Sony, it seems that come CES 2013 more will be revealed. This was seemingly confirmed by Ned Namura, head of Sony Hawaii, who was quoted as saying, “We’re going to be making some major announcements at the upcoming Winter Consumer Electronics Show. We will be showing a lot of other technologies, not just the Bravia Television, but advancements with the Play Station, also in Sony Pictures, and also in the Alpha Series cameras.” Considering that CES is one of the largest electronics expos around, we guess it’s not surprising that Sony might have some new products planned, although we wouldn’t have been surprised if Sony had chosen to reveal their Alpha products at Photokina as an alternative. Either way we will be there on hand for CES 2013, so if you’d like to see what Sony might have up their sleeves as far as their Alpha range of DSLR cameras are concerned, check back with us then for the details!

Samsung rumored to show 5″ 1080p display at CES

Companies have already started to roll out 1080p smartphone displays, and HTC‘s recent DROID DNA announcement marks the first time a smartphone with a 1080p display will hit American soil. However, Samsung won’t be far behind if recent reports are accurate. It’s rumored that Samsung will show off a 1080p smartphone display of their own at CES 2013.

Korean newspaper Aisae reports that Samsung has developed a 4.99-inch 1080p display that is said to be used in the company’s rumored Galaxy S IV handset. The display is expected to enter the production stage sometime in Q1 2013, and will be on showcase at CES 2013. The display is said to have a pixel density of 441ppi, which just beats HTC’s DRIOD DNA by one pixel.

If the production details are true, we could see the Galaxy S IV arrive sometime in Q2 2013 possibly. We heard about the device back in September, and it’s aimed to be the Galaxy S III‘s successor. We were tipped with a March 2013 release date, which is right on track with the 1080p screen production estimates.

The new 1080p AMOLED display from Samsung is claimed to be very thin with low power consumption, and will feature high contrast and a high refresh rate. Whether or not the screen will display that kind of performance is still up in the air. We’ll certainly have to save any judgement for when we eventually see it at CES come January.
