Dell introduces XPS 625 gaming rig

Dell has been pretty laptop-heavy at CES so far, but it looks to be balancing things out a bit today, with it introducing its new gamer-minded XPS 625 desktop. This one is AMD through and through, and includes your choice of AMD Phenom or Phenom II Black Edition processors, ATI Radeon HD4670 or HD4850 graphics cards (in single or CrossFireX configurations), and some other suitably high-end specs all around, including up 8GB of RAM, a whole host of hard drive options and, of course, an AlienFX custom lighting system to remind you just why you bought it. Best of all, prices start at a reasonable $999 for a decently-equipped system, and you can get your order in right now.

ASUS debuts 18.4-inch W90 gaming laptop at CES 2009

Got an itch for a gaming laptop that’s big enough to span the laps of both you and your lover? ASUS has you covered. Here in the desert, the outfit has introduced a potent 18.4-inch gaming rig with a 1080p panel, twin ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4870 X2 GPUs, three RAM slots (a world’s first, mind you) stuffed with 6GB of DDR2 memory, a Core 2 Duo processor, a half dozen (seriously) Altec Lansing speakers and a Turbo Gear function that will enable users to overclock the system and boost performance by as much as 25%. A few more configurations are available, including one with a 17-inch panel, an NVIDIA graphics option, dual HDDs, an optional Blu-ray drive and enough ports to put your average desktop to shame.

There will be a GSM-friendly 3G Palm Pre

We’ve gotten Palm on the record saying that there’s a WCDMA (read: UMTS world 3G) version of the Pre in the works, though we don’t know when or where. That means that the AT&Ts, T-Mobiles, and Vodafones of the world will get a shot at this baby. Suggestion, Palm: “soon” and “everywhere.”

Update: We’ve just seen a copy of the Pre’s press release, and sadly, the 3G GSM version is listed as being intended for “other regions” — in other words, places not served by Sprint. The good news, we guess, is that we’ve also confirmed that it’s HSDPA, so at least it’ll be hauling ass.

Hands-on with Pentax’s new lineup, including the white Pentax K2000

Let’s just say this straight out: the white Pentax K2000 is one of the hottest DSLRs we’ve ever seen. It’s seriously lustworthy. Considering how great the reviews have been, we’d say it’s definitely worthy of a spot on your list if you’re in the market. Pentax’s less-interesting P70 and E70 were also out — they look nice enough, for being pretty ordinary. Check it all in the gallery!

Palm Pre first hands-on with live updates!

This is it! Our first go-round with Palm’s newest entry to the smartphone field — the pre. Watch this page for updates on our first impressions, a live stream of photos after the break, and observations on the company’s rebirth into the marketplace.

1:19PM – First photos are up. They’re running us through a demo of the phone, so we haven’t gotten to touch it just yet — the tension is killing!

1:38PM – They let us play with it a bit — while they held the other end, of course. The keyboard is Centro-esque, with shallow presses and cramped spacing. The actual keys are rubbery and easy enough to find with the fingernails of our massive man hands, other folks might have better luck using the pads of their fingers. The touchscreen isn’t quite as responsive as the iPhone or G1 — or it could be the OS, there seems to be a tiny lag between a tap and an action — but it’s still pretty great. We spent mere seconds toying with the OS, but all the actions seem ultra-intuitive.

Update: You can watch some video after the break!

Video: iriver WAVE-HOME hands-on

We’re continuing our onslaught of CES hands-ons with the WAVE-HOME from iriver. In a nutshell, it’s a more feature-filled Ojo with much more than just video calling — namely calendar, notes, plus it packs a WiFi phone in the back of the unit (pictured above). The video after the jump doesn’t quite do justice to the smoothness of the interface, but your mileage may vary depending on the fatness of your fingers. iriver reps told us that they estimate the unit to be priced at less than $400 to make affordable enough for people to buy more than one. Feel free to peep our original post for all the juicy tech specs, and don’t forget to point your friends in this direction if you don’t wanna feel like a loser if you drop four bills.

AMD talks up mildly ambiguous graphics supercomputer

It’s not entirely clear what the purpose of AMD‘s newest supercomputer is, but it’s pretty safe to say that the company is making it out to be something better than it is. All harshness aside, the so-called Fusion Render Cloud will reportedly be the planet’s fastest graphics supercomputer. It sounds like the machine will be good for farming out tasks, and more specifically, for “real-time rendering of film and visual effects graphics on an unprecedented scale.” Evidently AMD’s hoping that gaming firms tap into the beast in order to develop and deploy next-generation game content, so that probably means it’s worthless for you. But hey, it sounds awesome, right?

SlingCatcher updates reportedly on the way, cheers heard all over

Sling Media’s SlingCatcher has been hampered since release due to a few software limitations, but according to ZatzNotFunny, project manager Matthew Feinstein has confirmed that both Slingbox PRO-HD high-def / networked drive streaming are on the way sometime this quarter. Supposedly, resolutions are expected to get bumped from 640 x 480 to 1,280 x 540, with the ultimate goal of hitting 1,920 x 1,080. We’re also told that UPnP support could be in the cards, and that OS X, SlingSync and SlingProjector software is in development. Mmm, tasty.

Dell previews new G-Series monitors

Hot on the heels of Dell’s new XPS Studio laptop release, the company’s back with its G-Series LED monitors. We’re assuming that the G stands for “green,” ‘cos they’re really working the tree-hugging angle on this one — pointing out that widescreen LED flat panels consume less than half the power of comparable monitors, and that their designs incorporate “environmentally preferable” materials. Two models are currently available — the G2210 measures 22-inches, boasting 1680 x 1050 resolution and should fetch $279, while the G2410 24-inch boasts 1920 x 1080 (HD) resolution, with an asking price of $359. Both models are planned for late February.
