EU committee to introduce legislation requiring common smartphone chargers

One of the biggest sources of irritation for many smartphone users who switch between devices is that many smartphones out there use different types of chargers. This is particularly true of Apple smartphones compared to Android devices. Most Android smartphones and tablets use a common micro USB charger. Apple on the other hand uses either […]

The PocketPlug Is An iPhone Case With A Built In Charger

We’ve seen an iPhone 5 case that has a Lightning cable attached to its back, which would allow you to charge your iPhone 5 nearly anywhere there’s a power outlet, so long as you have your adapter with you. You don’t see many iPhone cases that come with a built-in charger, which is exactly what makes the Prong PocketPlug so unique as it combines an iPhone case with a charger that helps to do away with wires and cables. Prong PocketPlug is an iPhone Case and Charger in One

The Prong PocketPlug case makes charging your iPhone a little more convenient by doing away with the wires. It’s bulkier than your typical phone case, but that’s because it’s got a phone charger built into it.

    Prong Charger

Just slip your phone into the case and flip out the swiveling prongs on the back of the case. Plug it into an outlet, and voila! Your phone’s charging. It comes especially handy when you’re traveling, because you won’t have to pack any additional cables, wires, or chargers anymore.

You won’t be able to use the phone while it’s charging, since it’ll be positioned against the wall. So in case you want to use it while it’s juicing up, just bring a cable because the Prong PocketPlug has a micro USB port on the side for corded charging.

The PocketPlug is available for the iPhone 4/4S and the iPhone 5 for $59.95 and $69.95 (USD), respectively.

iPad Charger Explodes, Sends Man Flying ‘Across The Room’

iPad Charger Explodes, Sends Man Flying ‘Across The Room’It seems that chargers are growing to be more and more of a fire hazard these days, as the latest incident involves an iPad charger which was said to have exploded the hand of a man, throwing him across the room as he unplugged the device. The man was thankful that it was him who received the electric shock instead of his 8-year old daughter, where he believed that the same shock would have killed her instead. Tim Gillooley, 34, is the victim in this case, and this was his recollection on what happened, “There was a huge bang and it blew me across the room. I was in shock. I was hysterically laughing for about two minutes. It was a bad shock that went down my arm. My mum was panicking and Chloe burst into tears. Nine times out of 10, Chloe would have gone to get it herself. I think it would have killed her.”

The iPad was purchased last November from the Apple store in Liverpool, but it apparently developed charging issues a few months after that. Despite returning the charger to the Apple store, he was told that the charger worked just fine, but deciding against taking any chances, he picked up a new genuine Apple charger complete with the Lightning cable, hoping that the problem would be solved this way – but it continued. Perhaps it is the power outlet that caused the charger to act this way?

Apple’s official charger trade-in scheme will cover UK, Canada and Australia

Apple charger tradein scheme reaches UK 8 for a firstparty plug

When we originally reported on Apple’s replacement program for third-party USB chargers, we only knew for sure that it covered the US and China. As 9to5Mac has spotted, however, the official webpage for the scheme now lists a number of other countries in which Apple will start accepting trade-ins on Friday, August 16th. These include the UK, where an official first-party charger will be reduced to £8 (from £15) when you hand over a third-party charger you have concerns about — and some Brits will indeed have concerns, as local Trading Standards agencies have issued warnings about knock-off chargers posing a risk of electrocution. Australia (where a new charger will cost $14 AUD), Canada ($11 CAD), France, Germany (10 euros) and Japan (1,000 yen) are also on Apple’s updated list. Head to the source link to find your nearest participating store or service provider, and just as a quick heads-up: it’s one replacement per device you own (a store rep will record your serial number) and the scheme will end on October 18th this year.

    DIY Solar-powered Boombox: The Boominator

Redditor anders202 built a boombox that’s perfect for summer parties. It’s called the Boominator, a solar-powered boombox that was designed by diyAudio member Saturnus back in 2007. Unlike its battery-devouring ancestors, the Boominator not only runs on free energy, it also gathers and converts enough solar power to charge mobile devices.

    boominator by anders202

Anders202′s Boominator is powered by an Indeed TA2020 2 x 12W amplifier and two 10W solar panels. It has two P.Audio HP-10W subwoofers and two Monacor MPT-001 piezo-electric tweeters on each side, so it can make people sweat whether it’s behind or in front of them. Anders202 says that with eight hours of sunlight, the Boominator can play for six hours at 100% volume and still have enough power left in its 12v battery to fully charge an iPhone 3 times. The only downside to the Boominator is that it weighs about 66 pounds Then again, I weigh over twice as much as the Boominator and I’m not even half as useful.

Check out the Boominator Wiki, Saturnus’ original guide or anders202′s image-filled walkthrough if you want to make your own Boominator.

Scosche boltBOX and microBOX now available

boltboxDo you think that all charging cables are the same, and there really isn’t much difference between one and the other? I guess the correct answer to that particular question would be this – “Wrong!” The mantra that you get what you pay for applies in this particular case where charging cables are concerned, and Scosche Industries has stepped up to the plate in order to meet this rather niche market head-on, where the award-winning innovator of consumer technology has just announced the availability of the boltBOX and microBOX, which so happen to be retractable charge and sync cables for Lightning as well as Android devices. The boltBOX will come in blue, green, pink, red, black and white colors, more or less guaranteed to add a splash of color to your desk or notebook. As for the microBOX itself, the color choices are a whole lot more limited – we are looking at just black and red options.

Kas Alves, Executive Vice President of Scosche Industries, said, “Consumers take pride in choosing cases for their mobile devices that fit their individual sense of style and personality. So we (Scosche) thought why should sync cables be so boring? boltBOX and microBOX add a little flair to something you have to do every day.”

It does not matter whether you have made up your mind to pick up the boltBOX or the microBOX, either one will come with a 3 foot long cable coupled with a magnetic locking connector which will be able to extend and retract easily, and this is achieved by pulling on both ends at the same time. As for the compact cable itself, it is housed within a sleek enclosure that is roughly the size of a small matchbox, enabling users to carry their cable with them all the time. To those who happen to be interested, the Scosche boltBOX and microBOX can be picked up for $24.99 and $14.99, respectively.
