DellCrystal.jpg

If you did your last case mod with some old spray paint and a Christmas stencil, you might be a cheap geek.

1. This stunning Dell Crystal monitor gives an instant upgrade to any office. While it originally sold for $999, Dell is now letting it go for only $499. It’s a 22-inch display with a tempered glass frame, and offers a 1680-by-1050 top resolution, a 2-millisecond response time, and a 2000:1 contrast ratio. The monitor also incorporates a webcam and four speakers.

2. Buy.com has a great price on a Verbatim portable hard drive. Get 160GB of storage in an easy-to-carry package for $46.49, with free shipping. If you need to carry around files for work and a miniature flash drive isn’t nearly large enough, check out this handy Verbatim drive.

3. If you could use some blank DVDs, you’ve got to go with the jumbo size. It’s the only thing that makes sense. Take a look at OfficeMax, which is selling 100 packs of Verbatim DVD+R discs for $24.99. Sounds good, right? It sounds even better when you see that the Verbatim 50 pack is selling for $34.99. So you need the giant size. Buy in bulk, son.

Cheap Geek: TomTom GPS, Coby Music Player, Portable XM Radio

tomtom-one-130s.jpg

If you think paying a dollar-and-a-half to see all the trees in a tree museum is still too expensive, you might be a cheap geek.

1. A $60 GPS? Here I thought $100 was a super-cheap price for a navigator from a major name, and then a $60 one appears. RadioShack is selling refurbished TomTom One 130 navigators for $59.99 after rebate. The One 130 has some nice extras, such as the ability to download map changes from other users when you connect it to your computer. This is the lowest price I’ve seen on a big-name GPS, so grab one while they’re available.

2. Buy.com has a Coby 1GB music player for $28.95, including shipping. I wouldn’t want to use it for my main music player, but if you’re looking for a lightweight player for working out or to take to the beach, it could be useful to have on hand. It plays MP3 and WMA files.

3. Speaking of portables, getting XM satellite radio on-the-go has never been so cheap. Amazon is selling the Samsung YP-X5X NeXus for $29.95 through its partner retailers. It plays not only XM but can also record up to 25 hours of content, and you can use it to play MP3 and WMA files from your music library.

Cheap Geek: Discount iPods, DVD Player/Recorder, Moxi Giveaway

iPodNano4G.jpg

If getting a company’s logo tattooed on your body for money seems like a sensible business decision, you might be a cheap geek.

1. A deal on iPods? It never happens, but right now it’s happening. iKitchen.com is selling 8GB 4th-generation iPod nanos in blue, pink, and purple, for $129.99. These don’t appear to be used or refurbished. You can also get a 32GB 2nd-generation iPod touch for $379.99. Now, there are some errors on the site, so be cautious and don’t believe everything you read: It claims the nanos regularly list for $199.99, but Apple sells them for $149.00. So you’re saving $20, not the $70 iKitchen.com claims. Definitely do not buy the 8GB iPod touch from the site: iKitchen.com is selling it for $259.99, while it only costs $229.00 on Apple.com. If you do buy from Kitchen.com, use the code “Memorial” for an extra 5 percent off.

2. If you don’t mind buying refurbished, Amazon has a great deal on the Toshiba D-RW2 DVD Player/Recorder. You can get one for $43.95 through a partner seller called Discount Jungle. Save video direct to disc with one-touch recording.

3. Here’s a little giveaway for the gentlemen: Click here before May 31, 2009, to win a Moxi HD DVR, as well as a one-year Rhapsody Unlimited membership and PlayOn media server license. This is a $995 value. Why is this for gentlemen? Because Moxi wants to help outfit your “mancave.”

SVA-ED4218P.jpg

If you sent out your wedding invitations by Twitter, you might be a cheap geek.

1. A sweet deal on a Plasma TV? Yes, you can believe your eyes. Buy.com is offering an SVA ED4218P 42-inch Plasma (through a company called Wholesale AV) for only $683.90–and the deal includes my favorite phrase: “free shipping.” This is a widescreen TV with a 16:9 aspect ratio and picture-in-picture and closed captioning support.

2. With video calling finally taking off, you need a better can than the one preinstalled in your notebook. Consider the Microsoft LifeCam NX-6000, a top-of-the-line webcam currently offered on Amazon for $29.75. This cam offers 2.0 megapixel HD video, 7.6 megapixel still photos, and a wide angle lens so you can get everyone in the family in the picture.

3. It must be spring cleaning for SwissGear: yesterday I brought you a great deal on a SwissGear rolling case and today I’ve got a deal on a SwissGear computer backpack. Amazon has it for $40.50. This backpack offers a mobile phone pocket, a padded computer compartment, and an airflow back system for comfort.

CanonVIXIAHG21.jpg

If you waited for the Tuesday matinee so you could see the new Star Trek movie for $2, you might be a cheap geek.

1. Some people like pocket video cameras, and some people demand professional quality. If you want to record video that will look amazing on your wall-size flat panel, try the Canon VIXIA HG21 camcorder. Amazon has it for $899, and you know that includes free shipping. This Canon records AVCHD video, offers a 12X optical zoom, and has a 120GB hard drive for storing up to 45 hours of video. You’ll enjoy crystal-clear images from the 3.3-megapixel full-HD CMOS sensor.

3. Upgrade to Sennheiser’s Open-Aire stereo headphones and hear what you’ve been missing. Buy.com has them for $51.91 with free shipping. I’m crazy about the sleek yet rugged design.

Cheap Geek: 50 Albums for $5 Each

AmazonMP3.jpgIf you don’t already follow the AmazonMP3 Twitter feed or belong to its related Facebook fan page, you might want to consider joining up. In addition to posting daily deals on select MP3 albums, Amazon recently used the two social networking feeds to announce that, through May, it’s offering 50 different MP3 albums for a mere $5 each.

The sale is good through May 31, 2009 and applies to quite a varied list of albums, including Aerosmith’s Big Ones, the Observe and Report soundtrack, and Kanye West’s 808s and Heartbreak. Rock on!

Cheap Geek: Canon Video Camera, Samsung 1TB Drive, Jawbone Bluetooth

CanonDC420.jpg

If you love to download music but haven’t bought any in the last seven years, you might be a cheap geek. And you better hope the RIAA doesn’t get ahold of you.

1. It’s all about the 37X optical zoom. You won’t get this with a Flip cam. If you’ve been looking for an inexpensive video camera, but today’s popular pocketable models don’t do it for you, check out the Canon DC420 DVD camcorder. It’s got an amazing 37X optical zoom, and Amazon’s got it for $352.49. Canon makes fantastic videocams, and this one records direct to DVD for easy playback and includes an image stabilizer as well as an SD memory card slot for saving digital photos.

2. Or is it all about the terabytes? Check out the storage you can get for only $74.99 (with free shipping). That’s the price for a Samsung Spinpoint F1 internal hard drive at Newegg.com. It’s nice and fast (7,200 RPM), and it’ll give you the room you need for huge photo or video collections.

3. Maybe it’s all about good looks. I was shocked to see that Buy.com is now offering the Jawbone, the premier fashion Bluetooth headset, for $39.99 with free shipping. For a wireless experience that sounds as good as it looks, pick one up.
