Apple Gets License For iPhones Compatible With China Mobile’s Network

Apple Gets License For iPhones Compatible With China Mobiles Network

Over the past few weeks there has been much talk of a deal between Apple and the world’s largest mobile carrier, China Mobile. Apple’s CEO had a meeting with carrier recently in China, on the other hand China Mobile reiterated that it is keen on selling the iPhone, adding that various commercial and technical issues in the way of a deal. The deal wasn’t announced at the media event yesterday, but it might be made public in the near future. A regulatory body in China has now granted Apple a network access license for the iPhone, thus allowing it to sell its smartphones through China Mobile.

China’s Telecom Equipment Certification Center granted the license on Wednesday. The iPhone can now run on China Mobile’s proprietary network standard. Apple has officially sold the iPhone through both China Unicom and China Telecom in the past, it wasn’t able to get its smartphone on China Mobile due to the carrier’s different network standard. Even though the license has been granted, analysts believe that the launch might not take place until November. China Mobile is in the process of rolling out its TD-LTE network, the rollout is expected to be completed in the next couple of months, after which it is likely that Apple and China Mobile’s iPhone deal will finally be announced.

China Mobile iPhone Launch Might Be Delayed Till November [Analyst]

It has been consistently rumored over the last few weeks that China Mobile, the largest mobile carrier in the world, will be launching the new iPhones soon. Apple CEO Tim Cook had a meeting with the carrier’s chairman recently, who said that China Mobile is keen on selling the iPhone. It was rumored recently that Apple is ready to start shipping units to the carrier, however as per famed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, China Mobile’s iPhone launch might be delayed till November.

China Mobile has over 700 million subscribers, analysts believe that Apple might sell as many as 20 million additional units if the iPhone is launched on this carrier. Before China Mobile can do that though, it needs to complete the roll out of its TDD-LTE network, which might cause the launch to be delayed. In a note to investors, Kuo says that the carrier’s TDD-LTE network hasn’t been properly prepared as yet. He also predicts that China Mobile will use the iPhone 5S as the flagship device for promoting its own TDD-LTE network, so its essential to get the network in place first before it starts blowing the trumpet. The new iPhones are expected to be launched in China, on two of China Mobile’s rivals, on September 20th.

China Mobile Reportedly Keen On Selling iPhone On Their Network

China Mobile Reportedly Keen On Selling iPhone On Their NetworkApple has been doing quite well for themselves around the world, and has no trouble selling iPhones. However there are carriers that don’t seem to be too willing to carry Apple’s iPhone, or who aren’t carrying them yet, and China Mobile is one of them. Given that China Mobile would essentially be the world’s largest telecom, it would be in Apple’s best interest to get them on board, and it looks like they are getting pretty close. According to China Mobile’s Chairman, Xi Guohua, talks with Apple are still in progress and both sides are reportedly pretty keen on the idea.

However it seems that there are also some commercial and technical issues that need to be sorted out before they are able to carry the iPhone, one of them being the commercialization of TD-LTE, a 4G LTE network that could support future iPhone devices. In any case we’re not sure when Apple and China Mobile is expected to conclude their deal, but undoubtedly this would be a feather in the cap for Tim Cook, who according to recent reports, has been told to be more “innovative” by Apple’s board.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Meets With China Mobile

Apple CEO Tim Cook Meets With China Mobile

We’ve already heard reports of Apple CEO Tim Cook heading over to China earlier this week for a series of meetings. Local reports claimed that he had met with China Telecom, which has been an Apple partner in the country for quite some time. China Mobile is the biggest mobile network in the world based on its sheer number of subscribers, 715 million to be precise, and yet it doesn’t officially carry Apple’s devices. The carrier has confirmed that its chairman had a meeting with Apple CEO, and that both of them discussed “matters of cooperation.”

The statement, provided to Reuters, doesn’t reveal the agenda of this meeting. A deal between China Mobile and Apple has been rumored for quite some time. Apple would obviously benefit if China Mobile started carrying its devices, such a deal would help the company grow the dominance of iPhones and iPads in China. It is believed that Tim Cook is mustering up support in China ahead of the expected launch of two new iPhones in September. Surely customers in China would be clamoring to get their hands on a new Apple smartphone, the only question that remains, is exactly when or if their particular carrier would start selling it to them.

Tim Cook meets with China Mobile in Beijing

After a less than spectacular couple of months for sales in the Greater China area, Tim Cook paid a visit to Beijing to speak with China Mobile chairman Xi Guohua. Apple’s CEO was there to “discuss matters of cooperation,” according to Reuters, a conversation that no doubt included bringing iPhones and iPads to the the carrier’s massive subscriber base. Apple has yet to issue a comment on the discussion, but a partnership could mean huge numbers for Cupertino, delivering iOS products to the mobile provider with the world’s largest subscriber base.

ZTE Geek claims world’s first Tegra 4 phone title

We’ve known about the ZTE Geek in the past, but very few details were known at that point, other than that it was running Intel’s Atom Z2580 SoC. However, today we’re being treated with what appears to be an unveiling of the ZTE Geek, running an NVIDIA Tegra 4 processor, making it the world’s first Tegra 4-equipped smartphone.

This ZTE Geek is the same one as the Intel Atom-powered version, but the Tegra 4 model will be available on China Mobile. The company shared some product shots on a Chinese forum ahead of the official announcement of the device. Details and specs of the new device still are not yet known officially, but leaks indicate the phone will pack quite a punch.

The Tegra 4 quad-core chip is said to be clocked at 1.8GHz and will have 2GB of RAM. Covering up the internals will be a 5-inch 1080p display with Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean running the show on the software end. There’s also an 8-megapixel camera with an LED flash and a 2MP shooter on the front for those inevitable selfies.

This is the first smartphone to carry the Tegra 4, and it’ll only be available on China Mobile for now, so a North American release may never happen, or we could see an international version pop up at some point, but specs could change if that happens. It probably won’t be long anyway until a Tegra 4-equipped smartphone lands in the US, as well as other parts of the world. It’ll only be a matter of time.

China said to get first LTE network this year

According to a Chinese report, China Mobile (the country’s largest wireless carrier), will be its 4G LTE network this year. The network could launch as soon as August, as long as China Mobile can get approval by next month. This will be China’s first-ever LTE network to launch in the country — quite a delay from the roughly two years that it’s been available in the US.

    4g-lte

The report comes from Chinese media outlet CWW, and they’re saying that the mobile operator is hoping to seek approval of its LTE-TD network by May 17, which would see the official launch of the network sometime in August of this year. In the meantime, China Mobile has been preparing by releasing several LTE devices, as well as setting up multiple LTE towers.

China Mobile has already deployed over 200,000 LTE base stations across 150 different locations in China, and they have said that they would be prepared for a full launch next month, including a full range of LTE smartphones going up for sale, as well as MiFi devices being available as well.

China Mobile’s total user base reaches 726 million, and it’s leaps and bounds ahead of what China Unicom and China Telecom have, which is 251 million and 168 million subscribers, respectively. No matter what, it seems China Mobile is dead serious about LTE, and by August when the LTE network is expected to launch, China Mobile will launch its LTE in full force.

iPhone 5S To Be Available On China Mobile In July [Rumor]

iPhone 5S To Be Available On China Mobile In July [Rumor]

Here’s yet another iPhone 5S rumor. Earlier today we reported on another one which claimed that Apple is going to start production of the iPhone 5S this quarter. It also added that the smartphone is likely to be released in the summer. This particular rumor coincides with that, as it suggests that the iPhone 5S will be available on China Mobile in July. While being available from more than 240 carriers in 100 countries around the globle, the iPhone has never been available from China Mobile, which happens to be the largest mobile carrier in the entire world. Regardless of that, the network still have over 15 million iPhone users, who are using unlocked devices.

This particular rumor also contradicts the previous one. The latter claimed Apple will be releasing a low cost iPhone in the second half of this year, whereas the former claims that Apple has no such plans and that it will continue to sell iPhone 4 when it releases iPhone 5S. There’s a lot of uncertainty these days in the news surrounding Apple’s upcoming smartphone(s), thankfully we’re not that far off from Summer 2013.

Texas Instruments brings scifi tech to life with DLP handson video

We’ve come across a number of DLP-based pico projectors over the years and while these products are getting smaller, brighter and higher resolution, it’s the integration with other devices that’s really captured our imagination. Samsung’s Galaxy Beam, which we reviewed last year, merges a 15-lumen nHD (640×360) DLP-based pico projector with a Galaxy S Advance. More recently at CES 2013, Texas Instruments announced its new Tilt & Roll Pixel chip architecture and demoed a handful of other DLP-equipped products live on our stage, including 3M’s Streaming Projector and Smart Devices’ U7 tablet.

The company recently invited us to play with some of these devices and to show us other applications in areas such as 3D printing, 3D scanning, optical research, medical imaging and even automotive. Some of this DLP-equipped tech, like the Interactive Center Console, shows where we’re headed in the near future — other products, like Christie’s VeinViewer Flex, exist today but remind us of something right out of science-fiction. Take a look at our galleries below, then join us after the break for our hands-on video and more info on these devices.
