Hasta La Gadget!

Google’s been taking bad press about Chinese search result filtering for years, and now it looks like the company simply fed up: it’s going to stop filtering Google.cn and it may pull of out the country entirely. The move comes on the heels of coordinated attacks on Gmail, which Google says were aimed at accessing the accounts of prominent human rights activists — and Google also says that it’s not the only company suffering such attacks in China. Only two accounts are said to have been hacked, but many more have apparently been accessed by third parties using malware or phishing schemes to obtain passwords. Google also says that these attacks have forced it to reconsider “the feasibility of our business operations in China,” and that it’s going to take the next few weeks to talk to the Chinese government and figure out a way to operate an unfiltered search engine in a legal way, and if it can’t be done, it’ll close Google.cn and potentially leave China completely. A gutsy move, to be sure — but seriously, Google, what took you so long?

Yeah, yeah — we’ve seen a fairly weak effort to ape the Pre before, but this… this is the knockoff webOS device your shady side has been waiting for. A dead ringer for the Palm Pre, the Cool K07 boasts a luscious 2.8-inch touchscreen (320 x 240 resolution), a T-Flash card slot, a 2 megapixel camera, inbuilt speaker, MP3 / MP4 player, a blazing fast connection to the web (GPRS, if you must know), Bluetooth, an FM radio tuner, alarm clock, a few games and room for 1,000 contacts. Granted, there’s none of that fancy “Synergy” stuff, and we’re guessing you won’t find any “cards” or “multitasking” here, but for $128 unlocked and room for the SIM card of your choice, how on Earth could you complain? Exactly. You can’t. Or maybe that’s just stunned silence we hear…

If the sources that Digitimes is reporting are correct, then China can expect to see a few more customized, 3G phones in the coming year. The sources are saying that both Acer and Asustek are planning models for 2010, and that Acer is working with China Mobile and China Unicom to produce TD-SCDMA and WCDMA models while Asustek is reportedly set to release a China-specific Garmin-Asus branded handset for both carriers in 2010 as well. Now, keep in mind of course that none of this has been confirmed by either company as of yet, but the move certainly wouldn’t surprise us, either.

Hey, now this isn’t your average, everyday, boring netbook now is it? Well, at least not in looks, anyway. The Sheng T108, which has recently been spotted in Shenzhen, China, has a brushed aluminum chassis that makes it stand out from the crowd, to be sure. Internally, you’ll find this 10.1-incher boasting an Intel Atom N280 CPU, 2GB of DDR2 memory, and a 250GB hard drive — nothing volcanically surprising, but not too shabby either. It’s also got a 3-cell battery, a VGA port, 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi support, a built in webcam, and a SIM card slot for 3G connectivity. The pricing is said to be somewhere in the realm of $300, and while there’s no word on availability of this puppy outside of China, we’ll certainly keep our eyes peeled for you. Even through the lean years, Moto’s been making waves in China where it enjoys comparably high popularity — it was one of the first major manufacturers to throw its support behind the nation’s homegrown TD-SCDMA 3G tech, after all, and it’s had a tendency to get the company’s sexier WinMo smartphones like the SURF. On that note, it doesn’t come as much of a surprise to see that they’ve now announced not one, not two, but three fairly attractive, high-end Android handsets specifically for duty in the Far East, one for each of China’s big three carriers (each of which employs a different 3G technology, per the gub’mint’s orders). Starting on the left, the XT701 is the phone that we’d believed to be the Sholes Tablet — and considering that it uses HSPA for China Unicom’s airwaves, we still have no reason to believe it couldn’t make the leap across the Pacific. The MT710 (pictured center) is an OPhone for China Mobile and stands the least chance of making an unfettered jump to another continent since it uses a completely customized UI along with a positively China-only TD-SCDMA radio. Finally, the XT800 on the right looks like a Dell Mini 3i done right to us, rocking dual-mode GSM and EV-DO for China Telecom’s rather heterogeneous network. We’ve got to hand it to Moto here: by all appearances, these 3.7-inch WVGA, 5 megapixel beasts could get Android fans drooling pretty much anywhere in the world, so let’s get ’em over to Europe and America on the double, eh?
