Chromebooks Could Be Getting “OK Google” Voice Commands

Chromebooks Could Be Getting OK Google Voice CommandsOne of the cool features of the Moto X and the Android 4.4 KitKat update is that it gives Android users the ability to wake up their device simply by saying, “OK Google”. Wouldn’t it be cool if our laptops could do that as well? Turns out that it might, according to Francois Beaufort who claims that the “OK Google” feature could be making its way onto Google Chromebooks in the future. This feature appears to be the beginning of things and will need to be enabled manually, suggesting that it isn’t exactly open to mass consumption just yet. Beaufort claims that this will allow users to wake up their Chromebooks as well as open the App Launcher at the same time.

It also seems that soon users will be able to perform more voice commands on their Chromebooks, such as open their emails, initiate chats, and more. For more information on enabling this feature, hit up Beaufort’s Google+ post or check out the Chromium page for the details. In the meantime what sort of cool “OK Google” features would Chromebook owners like to see make its way onto their computers?

Acer unveils $200 Haswell-based Chromebook for the extra-thrifty

    Acer C720 Chromebook with Haswell

Acer gave its Chromebook line a welcome tune-up when it launched the Haswell-based C720, but the $250 starting price was no doubt disappointing to those who wanted the C7’s $200 entry point. The company is accommodating those spendthrifts today with its $200 C720-2848 variant. The only sacrifice is a lower 2GB of RAM; owners still get a 1.4GHz Celeron processor, a 16GB solid-state drive and that vaunted 8.5 hours of battery life. Should you want to save a cool $50, or are just frustrated that you can’t buy a Chromebook 11, you can pick up the new C720 today from Amazon or Best Buy.

HP Chromebook 11 Being Yanked From Best Buy Shelves And Elsewhere

HP Chromebook 11 Being Yanked From Best Buy Shelves And Elsewhere

Just last month Google announced a new Chromebook, the HP Chromebook 11. It has an 11.6 inch IPS display, dualcore Samsung Exynos processor, 2GB RAM and a price tag of $279. Google touted the product as an ultra-affordable laptop which is also small and light. Powered by Chrome OS, it came with 100GB of Google Drive storage for two years, which would have been a life saver given the fact that the laptop only has 16GB of local storage. Sales of the Chromebook have apparently been stopped and no reason has surfaced as yet. The Verge reports that Best Buy has ordered employees to remove the Chromebook 11 from shelves, and that stores should stop selling it “effective immediately.” Best Buy has also removed the listing from its website without giving a reason.

The HP Chromebook 11 is also sold by Google and HP through their stores, but it is no longer available at either store. Amazon has stopped directly selling it as well, saying that customers have told them that “there may be something wrong” with their inventory of the HP Chromebook 11. Google, HP or Best Buy have yet to comment on why the Chromebook has mysteriously been made unavailable for purchase. We’ll update you when word comes in.
