Chromecast Gets 10 New Apps, Including Songza, VEVO, And Revision 3

chromecast

Slowly but surely, Google’s Chromecast devices is beefing up with content partners. The company just announced 10 new apps landing on the $35 smart TV dongle, including VEVO, Revision 3, PostTV, and Songza, to name a few.

For those of you who don’t already know, Chromecast is a device developed by Google that plugs right into your TV to add various streaming services like YouTube, Netflix and most recently HBO Go.

Here’s what Google had to say about the new apps:

Beginning today you can enjoy action sports, news, music videos, and more with the addition of VEVO, Red Bull.TV, Songza, PostTV, Viki, Revision 3 and BeyondPod.

And for those many holiday gatherings, you can also cast your personal media straight to your TV using Plex, Avia, or RealPlayer Cloud apps. There’s no need to huddle around small screens when you can share your own photos and videos using your phone, tablet, or laptop.

Songza Holidays

Along with the launch on Chromecast, Songza is also launching new Holiday Playlists.

Songza has been relatively quiet since the launch of iTunes Radio in September, but that might have to do with raising $4.7 million and launching Club Songza, the company’s ad-free premium service.

Or perhaps they were just hard at work on bringing a variety of holiday-related playlists to the apps. Songza has developed over 75 different Christmas playlists ranging from Drunken Christmas Party to Christmas on the Beach.

You can check out the app here.

Chromecast mirroring signs spotted (but it may not be perfect)

Official Android screen mirroring for Chromecast looks to be fast approaching, with signs of code supporting the display option spotted among recent Android 4.4.1 patches. The ability to stream content locally from any Android device to a Chromecast plugged into a TV or display was unofficially hacked into the dongle early on, but Google banned […]

Chromecast Plex media center app support may come soon

The Google Chromecast device has proven to be a very popular way to stream content from portable devices to a big screen TV in the living room. One of the big draws of the Chromecast device is that it is very cheap at under $40. Despite the low price and good performance of the device, […]

Google Chromecast Custom ROM Released

Google Chromecast Custom ROM Released

Android is an amazing operating system, particularly because there are unlimited possibilities when it comes to tinkering with the OS. Custom ROMs, kernels and firmwares are easily available for a wide variety of Android devices. Its interesting to see that even the highly stripped down version of the OS on Google Chromecast can also be tinkered with. Senior XDA member ddggttff3 has released a Google Chromecast custom ROM which brings a number of features that are not originally available on the dongle.

Google released the Chromecast HDMI dongle earlier this year. Only $35, the dongle lets users stream content from their mobile devices to their TVs. The PwnedCast ROM for Chrome is rooted, has its own dedicated recovery and over-the-air update system, meaning that if the developer releases an update for the ROM, it would be automatically downloaded on the dongle. Based on the 13300 stock image, Chromecast owners who were quick enough to root the dongle before Google released the root-blocking OTA update can install the ROM. It won’t work if you were able to root your Chromecast back then. Features include root SSH/Telnet access, Google’s OTA update disabled, built in KyoCast, custom boot image and more. The ROM and installation instructions can be found here.

Google Introduces Chromecast-Specific App Segment To Play Store App

Google Introduces Chromecast Specific App Segment To Play Store AppWhen it comes to Google’s support for their very own Chromecast, you can more or less say that that it still remains rather limited, although there is always the bright promise of additional apps being worked on for the future. Still, the apps that play nice with Chromecast right now happen to be widely used by many, including the likes of YouTube, Google Play Music, Google Play Movies, Netflix, Pandora, Hulu Plus, and of course as recently as last week, HBO GO. Well, we have good news for you – Google is working on rolling out the official Chromecast SDK which will hopefully see a deeper level of integration of apps.

Apart from that, Google’s Chromecast promotion also involves kicking off the holiday season with a new promotion, “For a limited time we’re giving you an HD movie rental from Google Play with every purchase of a Chromecast device. It’s the perfect treat to add to that special someone’s stocking. At just $35 each, why not pick one up for both of you?” according to the Google Play’s site. Do bear in mind that this promotion will be valid for “any movie rental or other content on Google Play valued at $6 or less”. Are you pleased with this development?

Google Play Store now highlights Chromecast-friendly Android apps

    Chromecast section in Google Play

Google has lately taken to highlighting tablet-native Android apps; it only makes sense that the company would devote the same kind of love to Chromecast owners. Accordingly, the search firm has recently posted a Chromecast section in Google Play for those browsing from their Android devices. The selection is thin at the moment — you’ll find only Google’s media apps, HBO Go, Hulu Plus, Netflix and Pandora. Still, the section should be a handy one-stop shop for anyone eager to stream video on their TV — and might have a few more entries soon.

Chromecast stand-in CheapCast now beams browser tabs to your display

CheapCast is a great way to get some of Chromecast’s functionality for free, sure, but it’s been lacking a few of the Google dongle’s features since the app launched. If you’ve been hankering to beam browser tabs to your TV (via an HDMI-or-WiFi-connected mobile device, of course), CheapCast’s latest update enables just that. Android Police notes that this seemingly only works with tabs and not fullscreen casting, while DRM’d services like Netflix and Google Play Movies “actually might never work.” However, this should make it easier to play Vimeo or other Flash-based video content on your flatscreen — right where it belongs.

Streaming is Coming: HBO Go App Gets Chromecast Support

If you are a fan of the Google Chromecast streaming appliance, you will love the news that has turned up this week. The HBO Go app has now been updated to support Chromecast streaming. That means you can watch your favorite HBO programs, like Game of Thrones, on your TV using the Chromecast device.

    hbo go chromecast 620x305magnify

The app has been updated to support Chromecast on Android and iOS platforms. The HBO Go app now gives users a button at the top that will let you choose Chromecast. Once chosen, any video launched will be played on Chromecast not the smart device.

Chromecast is one of the least expensive streaming devices out there, selling for just $35(USD). When the Chromecast device launched it supported YouTube and Netflix. It has now added support for Pandora and Hulu Plus. The playback quality of the video via Chromecast is said to be as good as other streaming sources like Apple TV and Roku devices.

Of course, you’ll still need to be an HBO cable or satellite subscriber in order to use the service.

Chromecast apps readied for December hackathon

There’s a type of event that’s been happening in recent months and years that hardware manufacturers call “hackathons”, events where developers are encouraged to bring their biggest and best to the table. For the most part, these hackathon events are pushed to bring apps to platforms that have a distinct lack of software partners. In […]

Google invites devs over for a Chromecast hackathon plus SDK show-and-tell, updates official app

Google has slowly trickled out more authorized commercial apps that can stream to its Chromecast dongle since launch (Hulu, Pandora, and most recently HBO Go) but what about homebrew? So far developers have been able to work with a preview Cast SDK (creating a few impressive demonstrations) but restrictions have prevented these apps from being released for widespread use. That will probably change next month, as Google has invited several developers including CyanogenMod / AirCast dev Koushik Dutta and Thomas Kjeldsen to a hackathon on December 7th and 8th in Mountain View. An opportunity to test drive the “upcoming release” of the Cast SDK is promised, plus an opportunity to talk with Google engineers about what it can do.

While we wait to find out what devs will be officially allowed to create for the $35 dongle, the official Android Chromecast control app got an update tonight. The new version brings a lightly refreshed design with the side-tray style seen in many Google apps lately, and adjusted the display of time zone settings and the Chromecast MAC address to ease troubleshooting.
