Tencent ups the ante, offers users 10TB of free cloud storage in promotion

Image

If you thought that the free storage that’s offered by Microsoft, Google and others were generous, then you’ve never been to China. Tencent, in an attempt to crawl past local rivals Baidu and Weibo, is offering customers a whopping 10 Terabytes of space on its Weiyun cloud storage service. All users need to do is sign up with the company, offer up their QQ account number, and download the Weiyun mobile app — which bags ’em an instant 1TB, with the allowance gradually increasing to 10TB the more files they upload. The only downside for us, naturally, is that the promotion does make SkyDrive’s 25GB seem a bit stingy by comparison.

Box announced today that it now has 20,000,000 or 20 million users around the globe. The cloud storage service serves more than 180,000 businesses, including 97 percent of Fortune 500 companies. Five months ago, the service had 18 million users, served 150,000 businesses including 92 percent of Fortune 500 companies. Box co-founder and CEO Aaron Levie announced two new updates in a blog post today. They’ve doubled the free storage in the Personal plan from 5GB to 10GB. A new Starter edition has been unveiled to make it easy and affordable for small businesses to move onto Box. The new Starter edition will cost $5 per user, per month.

Levie says that they’ve been contemplating this move for a long time and that this is the biggest change they’ve made to their offerings since 2010. Small businesses or teams that contain 1-10 users can sign up for the Starter edition. It offers 100GB of storage for the aforementioned cost. Box has also made a small change to its Business plan. Companies can now add one integration with an enterprise platform. Levie writes that they’ll be making a number of announcements in September which will be focused “elegant experiences” for users across the web and mobile. He hasn’t provided an exact date on which the announcements will be made.

Google gives the gift of server-side encryption for Cloud Storage

Google gives the gift of serverside encryption for Cloud StorageThere’s little doubt Google knows a thing or two when it comes to encrypting its own data, and now the company’s kindly sharing some of that cryptographical love. Starting now, data uploaded to the Cloud Storage platform will be encrypted on the server side of things before being uploaded. The company’s promised that the added safety won’t impact performance, and no additional setup will be needed on your end. Also, once you, the authorized reader, are ready, that data will be auto-transferred and decrypted. The company’s also going to start encrypting older data, but that migration is likely to take a few months.
