Comcasts Internet Plus Bundle Offers Internet, HBO For $40 Per Month

Cable subscribers have been dealing with bundles for as long as most people can remember. Cable companies throw in a ton of channels inside of these bundles, only to charge a premium for the channels you actually want, like HBO and other channels they deem to be “premium.” Up to now, cable subscribers just had to put up with these bundles, but Comcast may have made cable cutting even more appealing with their latest “Internet Plus” bundle. US cable companies may finally be warming up to the idea of letting Netflix establish an app presence on set-top boxes, reports the Wall Street Journal. Comcast’s See It Feature Lets You Tune Into A TV Show From A Tweet

Comcasts See It Feature Lets You Tune Into A TV Show From A Tweet

Comcast and NBCUniversal have announced a new partnership today that they’ve made with Twitter. As a result of this partnership, Comcast Xfinity TV customers get a new feature called See It which allows them to tune into a TV shows from a tweet, an expanded tweet to be precise. Customers will be able to change the channel, play a show On Demand and even set the DVR all through the expanded tweet. Brian Roberts, Comcast’s CEO, says that this feature essentially creates “an instant online remote control.”

Twitter is without a doubt one of the most widely used online destinations for real time conversations, which may include thousands of tweets about a particular TV show. Its not unusual to see an influx of tweets when a TV show, a rather popular one, is airing. Seeing such tweets might tempt people to tune in and get in on the action. See It makes the process much more easier. The service will launch next month and will have access to a number of NBCUniversal channels such as CNBC, MSNBC, USA, Syfy, NBC Sports Network, NBC and more. Twitter says that it is working with Comcast to bring See It to other networks as well.

Comcast tests cloud DVR app for iOS, brings live TV and recordings to mobiles

Comcast Labs DVR app for iOS is apparently in testing, shifts recording to mobile devices

Comcast announced plans for cloud based recordings with its upcoming X2 platform rollout, but FierceCable has spotted an iOS app in iTunes that’s ready for the feature. Published by Comcast Interactive Media, the Comcast Labs DVR app promises access to user’s cDVR service while behind their Comcast modem. What we can see of the UI is very basic, but the setup screens promise a “revolutionary new DVR that streams live TV and shares your recording to tablets, phones and all your TVs” and download recordings to mobile devices for viewing “on the go away from home – even offline.” There’s no hint as to when this will be available for more people, but the evidence is clear that it will take on competition including Sling, DirecTV’s Nomad and TiVo’s Stream.

Netflix SuperHD, 3D streaming options pop up on Comcast, Verizon (update: gone)

Ever since Netflix introduced its SuperHD streaming with higher quality 1080p video and 3D support at CES in January, it’s been restricted to only ISPs participating in its OpenConnect CDN program. Tonight, either there’s some kind of glitch or that participation has been expanded, because users with previously unsupported ISPs are seeing SuperHD buttons on Netflix as well. We’ve been able to confirm it and even stream SuperHD and 3D video on previously unsupported ISPs like Comcast and Verizon. There are several reports on Twitter of people suddenly seeing the option as well, and we’ve contacted Netflix to see what’s going on. So far the company has not responded, but if you’ve been waiting for some higher quality streaming options, hit the test page to see if you have the green light then try it out on a SuperHD-ready device (PS3, Roku, Apple TV, Wii U, Windows 8 and some others).

Update: And just like that, they were gone. We’re getting reports from readers and seeing ourselves that the green light has gone back to red and SuperHD streaming is no more on our Comcast connection. We have yet to hear from the company but right now a glitch or accident of some kind is the most likely explanation — luckily it lasted just long enough for us to get through a 3D highlight reel from Art of Flight.

    [Thanks, Tim]

Comcast Said To Be Readying New Anti-Piracy Strategy

Comcast Said To Be Readying New Anti Piracy Strategy

There has been much debate on ways to curb online piracy, but no one seems to have come up with a concrete solution up till now. For the people who make movies, TV shows and music, piracy is a big problem. Rumor has it that Comcast is readying a new strategy so as to drive down the rate of pirated movies and TV shows being downloaded. Variety, citing unnamed sources, claims that Comcast’s strategy is to display links to legally buy or rent movies or TV shows that a user is attempting to download illegally. This would mean that those users will actually have to pay for whatever they wish to download, the price they pay will not only be for the content itself, it will also be for upholding the law.

This new strategy is radically different from the Copyright Alert System that’s currently in place. User’s indulging in online piracy receive notices from their ISP, if they ignore them continuously, their accounts may be suspended or the ISP may throttle their internet speed. Comcast is apparently trying to get movie studios and ISPs onboard, so right now it is not known when this new strategy will come in effect.
