Turtle Beach Unveils Ear Force X11 Gaming Headset for PC, XBox 360

Turtle Beach X11 - HeadsetAt CES earlier this year, Turtle Beach was quiet about new products might be coming down the pike and didn’t show off much in the way of new audio hardware. But the company has a long and storied history of superior audio quality, especially among gamers and audiophiles, both for its sound cards and its gaming headsets. Today, Turtle Beach announced it would build on the popularity of its X1 gaming headset for the Xbox 360 with the Ear Force X11 headset for the Xbox 360 and PC.

The X11 adopts the design and some of the popular features of Turtle Beach’s X31 and X41 headsets, such as an extra-long audio cable that allows you to game on the couch without worrying about pulling your XBox out of your entertainment center, and large ear cups that fit all the way around your ears for maximum comfort during long gaming sessions.

Hands On: Overland Acadia Laptop Backpack, Sporty and Rugged

Overland_Acadia.jpg

As you might expect from a company that specializes in rugged bags for outdoor use, the Overland Acadia ($100 direct), a “laptop-friendly” backpack, looks like it’d be right at home at a campsite or on a college campus. Offered in two ballistic-nylon colorways (Storm Blue/Sprout, left, or Black/Dusty Blue), the Acadia bag is roomy and tough–and also very comfortable to carry.

The well-made bag features padded straps and a padded back panel that keeps hard edges away from you. You slide your laptop into the side at the back of the bag, so no need to open up the main compartment i f you want to access it in a hurry. (The lined-and-padded sleeve measures about 16-by-11 inches inside, so my 15-inch laptop had room to spare.)

The Acadia has two front compartments; the smaller one at the top is lined with fleece to help protect the gadgets you might store there, and the roomier bottom compartment has its own smaller slots too. Finally, there’s a large zippered mesh pocket inside the main compartment. And the bag has a handy side bottle holder (which also fits fold-up umbrellas nicely).

I carried the Acadia around with me for a few weeks, and it served me well. It never got uncomfortable, even when it was heavy–and you can fill this bag up with a lot of stuff. One thing I’m used to on my Timbuk2 backpack is that you can easily adjust its straps on the fly; I missed that on the Acadia. You can change its straps’ lengths, just not as you’re wearing it. But I like this bag’s jaunty casual style (especially for students), and I think it’ll take a long time to wear out.

LaCie5big.jpgSmall- and medium-size businesses, LaCie has your storage needs covered with a line of three new big data solutions. They include the d2 Network 2 (with a single disk), the 2big Network 2 (with two disks), and the 5big Network 2 (shown above, with five disks). The line offers data access of up to 70MB per second and lets users share files or back up networked Windows and Macintosh computers.

LaCie designed the Web-based administration tool to be extra-easy, and it can be used to manage users, groups, and shares, as well as to place data use quotas easily. Admins can also join a Windows domain using Active Directory, to automatically import users and existing permissions.

The 2Big Network 2 and 5big Network 2 offer RAID 1 for redundancy, while the 5big Network 2 offers RAID 6. Each comes with a three-year warranty. The line starts at $229.99 and is available from the LaCie Online Store.

Microsoft Debuts Three Mice Under $30

microsoft-wireless-mobile-m.jpgThank you, Microsoft, for this unexpected deal. The little company from Redmond has introduced three mice that feature the company’s BlueTrack technology, and all three list for under $30. That’s the first time BlueTrack has been available at this price.

BlueTrack was introduced in September, 2008, and it lets the user mouse over any surface, including wood, glass, metal, and marble. As someone who’s tried it, yes, it really does work that well.

The three new mice:

  • The Wireless Mobile Mouse 3500 ($29.95) has an ambidextrous design and rubber side grips. It will be available in April in Lock Ness Gray and Dragon Fruit Pink (shown).
  • The Wireless Mouse 2000 ($29.95) is a full-size mouse made for portable use. It has an ambidextrous design and rubber side grips, and will be available in March.
  • The Comfort Mouse 4500 ($24.95) is a wired mouse for people who don’t want to worry about changing batteries. Look for it in March in Sea Blue, Poppy Red, and Strawberry Pink.

CompactFlash 5.0 Supports Up to 144 Petabytes

CompactFlash logo.JPGGood news: if you thought the current CompactFlash 4.0 storage limit of 137 Gbytes was too restrictive, the new CF 5.0 standard should shatter that barrier for a good long time.

The CompactFlash 5.0 standard creates an upper boundary of 144 petabytes, an almost unfathomably high capacity of storage: almost 147,500 terabytes. One and two-terabyte hard drives are common, but 147,000? On a flash card? That will only be achieved in the far, far future.

The CompactFlash Association competes with the Secure Digital (SD) card, which has announced its own SDXC standard, taking capacity points up to 2 terabytes. Panasonic announced its first SDXC cards in January.

National Geographic Designs Come to a Gadget Near You

NationalGeographic.jpg

We must be witnessing the rebirth of National Geographic. It’s got a hot cable channel that goes by the hipper name of Nat Geo, and now Gelaskins is offering device skins that feature images by the magazine’s renowned photographers. This doesn’t seem like the stuffy magazine that my grandmother used to subscribe to.

The GelaSkins coverings span the range of the magazine’s interests, with images from nature, wildlife, human accomplishment, space, and sea. Click over to the online portfolio, and you’ll have a hard time choosing just one. Preset designs are available for laptops and iPhones. For other gadgets, you can use the site’s do-it-yourself service and pick whatever device template you need. Prices range from $14.95 to $29.95, based on the device.

If all this sounds a little high-minded for your taste, Gelaskins’ next collection, featuring images from Marvel Comics, will be released soon.

Adesso Keyboard Offers Slim Shape, Wireless Range

AdessoWKB-4200.jpg

Adesso is looking beyond the office with its latest keyboard: it wants to take over your living room and conference rooms, as well. The Adesso WKB-4200UB has a slim shape so you can easily tuck it away, perhaps between the couch and wall, when it’s not in use. It also communicates wirelessly (with 2.4-GHz RF connectivity) at a 30-foot range. That should be more than enough, right? At 30 feet, you couldn’t see the screen anyway.

If that was all it had going for it, the WKB-4200UB would be indistinguishable from dozens of other wireless keyboards, but there’s more. It includes a touchpad on the right side, so you can mouse around the screen without an actual mouse, and an LCD that shows the time and date. The Sleep mode prevents you from draining the battery too quickly, or you could just use the On/Off switch. The keys on this full-size keyboard are pleasantly soft. Sadly, it only works with Windows 7/Vista/XP/2000 systems. It’s available now for the slightly steep price of $119.99.

Hard Candy Cases Announces New Cases for the iPad

Hard Candy Cases - iPad

Apple’s iPad may not be out yet, but that’s not stopping a number of manufacturers from developing cases that will fit the tablet when it hits store shelves. Hard Candy Cases, a new company with some very attractive Macbook and netbook cases, announced its new line of iPad cases that will be available alongside the iPad when it hits Apple Store shelves in March.
The new cases come in a variety of colors and flavors. The iPad Sleek Skin and the iPad Rubber Protect both feature a form-fitting rubberized protective case with a snap-on screen protection for travel, and are available for pre-order for $34.95 and $39.95 respectively.
The iPad Bubble Sleeve, Hard Sleeve, and Hard Shell all feature Hard Candy’s signature bubble-style and polycarbonate design. The iPad Hard Shell has a translucent snap-on screen lid to protect the display, while the other two models are slide-in sleeves designed to protect your iPad while you travel. They’re also available for pre-order for $44.95 each.

Kingston Delivers Fast 16GB microSDHC

Kingston16GBmicroSDHC.jpgFaster. Smaller. That explains so much of what happens in the computing world, and especially today’s announcement from Kingston Digital. The memory giant announced the availability of a 16GB microSDHC Class 10 card. If you’re not familiar with the “Class” business, that means it meets Class 10 requirements spelled out in the SD Association Specification 3.00: it has a minimum data transfer rate of 10MB/second.

The card comes with a lifetime warranty and Kingston’s 24/7 tech support. Nice. I wish more tech companies stood behind their products like that. You can buy it alone for $138, with an SD adapter for $139, or with a miniSD and SD adapter for $140. Those numbers are a little high, but you know how memory prices drop quickly. Just check the specs of your product before you buy: this card is compatible with microSDHC, miniSDHD, and SDHC devices, but not with standard microSD-enabled devices or readers.

LaCie Intros a Rugged eSATA Drive

LaCieRuggedeSATA.jpg

If you’ve got a notebook with an eSATA port, it’s time to put it to work. LaCie has expanded its Rugged family of external hard drives with the LaCie Rugged eSATA. Transfer huge files in no time with speeds up to 90MB per second. The drive is bus-powered when connected to a USB-eSATA combo port, also known as Power eSATA. It also works with standard eSATA ports with the included USB power-sharing cable.

The tough, orange, good-looking casing was designed by Neil Poulton, while the aluminum shell is scratch-resistant aluminum. Internal shock absorbers and a shock-resistant bumper protect you from drops and bumps. Besides the onboard storage, this external comes with 10GB of online storage with Wuala for one year. Pick one up and you’ll get 500GB of storage for $159.99.
