Papa Johns Comes to Your PS3

Papa Johns logo.jpgGaming and snacks go together like Grand Theft Auto and parental disclaimers. Surely anyone who can combine the thrill of playing a video game with the satisfaction of ordering–and ultimately consuming–a pizza deserves a wing in the gamers hall of fame.

That dream becomes a reality today. Papa John’s can now be ordered directly from the PS3’s main startup page, right next to the YouTube link. Clicking on the Papa John’s link brings up a PlayStation version of the pizza chain’s site.

And, lest you want to seek out other gut-busting options: there’s Chipotle burritos via the iPhone, Pizza Hut via Facebook and Domino’s via TiVo.

Now just make sure you wipe off your hands before picking up the controller.

Get Your Hands on a Ferrari, Kind Of

ThrustmasterFerrari.jpg

So maybe you’ll never own an actual Ferrari; but accessory maker Thrustmaster would like to sell you a little of that automaker’s style and performance, in the form of a gamepad.

Thrustmaster, the expert at mastering thrust, has just released four Ferrari-licensed gamepads, all fully programmable and compatible with the PS3 and your PC.

Three of the gamepads, the 430 Scuderia Limited Edition, the Ferrari F60 Limited Edition, and the F430 Challenge Limited Edition, offer flowing curves meant to suggest cars submitted to wind tunnel tests. These three are wireless and the first two offer 2.4GHz connectivity. The fourth model, the F1 Dual Analog Ferrari F60 Exclusive Edition, is wired.

All four models will be released in mid-October. The first two listed here will sell for $49.99, the third for $39.99, and the wired controller for $24.99. Look for them at Buy.com, NewEgg.com. Walmart.com, and Amazon.

Nintendo Reveals Wii Fit Plus Launch Date, New Color Options

WiiFitPlus.jpg

Get ready, Wii fans, because Wii Fit Plus is launching in North America on October 4. While delivering the keynote address at the 2009 GameStop Manager Conference, Nintendo of America president and COO Reggie Fils-Aime offered that tidbit and much more:

  • Wii Fit Plus is an enhanced version of the bestseller with new exercises, yoga activities, and balance games. Players will be able to customize their workouts to target specific body areas or to fill specific intervals of time.
  • Bundled with the Wii Balance Board, Wii Fit Plus will sell for $99.99. Current Wii Fit owners will be able to get an upgrade disc for $19.99.
  • Nintendo will release a black version of the Wii remote bundled with a black Wii MotionPlus accessory during the holiday season.
  • Black nunchuks will also be available this holiday as a standalone purchase.
  • Also, a little DSi news: White and pink DSi versions will go on sale September 13, for the standard DSi price of $169.99. So far, only blue and black versions have been available.

Move Over PS3, Xbox 360 Gets a Price Drop

Console manufacturers aren’t screwing around this holiday season. A week after Sony’s introduction of the PS3 Slim and resulting price drop to $299, Microsoft has lopped $100 off the price of the Elite Xbox 360–putting it at $299 as well.

Nintendo, the recession ball is in your court.

As Paid Content points out, the Microsoft is suggesting that such a drop had absolutely nothing to do with Sony. “We haven’t been building the Pros anymore; we’re phasing them out at a $249 price point,” said the console’s product manager, David Dennis. “This is a manufacturing change that has been in the works for many months–we couldn’t just make a global supply change within a week.

Earlier this month, Microsoft actually raised prices for its Xbox Arcade configuration from £129.99 to £159.99 in the UK.

Nintendo Patents Football Controller

Are you ready for some football (-based gaming controllers)? Nintendo hopes so. The company has filed a patent for a football-based controller–essentially a Nerf football with some holes carved out in it where you can shove your controller.

The football has slots for the Wiimote and Nunchuk. There’s also a handle on the ball so you can, you know, make believe you’re throwing the thing. Judging from the above shot, the controller is also ideal for ballet practice.

PS3 Motion Controller Coming in Spring

ps3controllermotione3.jpg

Remember that new PlayStation 3 motion controller that was announced back in June at E3, as all the other major console manufacturers (i.e. Nintendo and Microsoft) announced their own new motion controllers? Well, the CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Kazuo Hirai announced today in an interview that, “we are slating [the PS3 Motion Controller] for spring of next year.”

The controller is the next step in a process kickstarted with the PS3 Slim, which is aimed at invigorating the console, which hasn’t exactly being flying off the shelves compared to the Xbox 360 and Wii. “It’s something that we’ve been working on for the longest time,” Hirai said about the controller, which admittedly looked fairly impressive from where I was sitting during the Sony press conference.

Report: Gamers are Fat and Sad

I’ve got some news. Are you sitting down? If you’re a gamer, the answer is almost certainly “yes.” According to a recent survey by Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Emory University, and Andrews University, the average American game is 35, fat, and depressed. Wait, that can’t be right…

The study, culled from 552-Seattle area residents aged 19 to 90, discovered that, on average, gamers weigh more and have “a greater number of poor mental health days” than non-gamers. Researchers who conducted the study for The American Journal of Preventive Medicine claim it “reveal[s] important patterns in health-related correlates of video-game playing and highlights avenues for future research.”

Jeez, where’s Dr. Mario when you need him?

Razer Offers Massive Buttons for MMO Players

RazerNaga.jpg

MMO fans, casting spells just got a little easier. Razer, the premier gaming peripherals company, just unleashed the Razer Naga, a mouse created just for you. This right-handed mouse offers a 12-button grid where your thumb sits giving you an alternate way of calling up your keyboard’s spell keys. That leaves your left hand free to work other keyboard controls.

The Naga comes with customization software that lets you create unlimited profiles for supported titles, and also program different in-game commands for each of your characters. For more, check out this YouTube video.

Razer also just introduced the Megasoma, a mousing surface that’s designed to combine the best features of hard and soft mats. Razer says it offers the superior tracking and durability of a hard mat, as well as the smooth glide of a soft mat.

Both products were announced today at Gamescom 2009 in Cologne, Germany. The Naga sells for $79.99 and the Megasoma for $49.99.

250GB PS3 Slim Discovered Through Sony FCC Trickery

Sony, it seems, was so intent on keeping the existence of the PS3 CECH-2000A (that’s the PS3 Slim for the rest of you) a secret that the device was officially filed as Sand Dollar Enterprise, Inc’s Computer Entertainment System for the FCC. The address for Sand Dollar Enterprise, it turns out, is actually registered to Sony.

Said filing revealed something that yesterday’s Sony announcement didn’t yield–the PS3 Slim CECH-2001B, a 250GB version of the svelte new console, which, of course, is much bigger than the new 120GB version.

No word on pricing or availability of course, but one wonders if we won’t see a new addition to the P3 family before the holidays.

Sony Confirms PS3 Slim

ps3slim120.jpg

Sony today confirmed the release of the PS3 (CECH-2000A). The console has picked up the far more suave nickname of “PS3 Slim” from various blogs that have been reporting on rumors of its existence for some time; the nickname comes from the console’s newly streamlined form factor. Evidence of the console emerged this morning when it began to show up in store ads for Kmart and Sears.

The console features a built-in 120GB hard drive and will go on sale September 1 for $299–a price shared, interestingly enough, with the new discounted 80GB PS3. The 160GB model will be lowered to $399.

Sony has also officially rebranded the unit the PS3 (rather than the PlayStation 3), though in today’s press release, it did use the old name. Old habits die hard.
