Skype Your Way Around The World

They say that the world is an oyster – yours, and as we all jolly well know, an oyster ain’t all that big to begin with. Could it really be, that the vastness of the oceans as well as all the continents of the world is far too small a place for someone as great as you? Nah, not really, but this does not mean you ought to remain detached from everyone else, does it? After all, with the advent of modern day technology, keeping in touch with your family and friends across numerous continents should not be too difficult a task – there are plenty of instant messaging software and apps, not to mention the mainstay for many a long distance relationship – Skype.

With more than 200 countries worldwide, one question begs to be asked, “Is it possible to call every one on Skype?” Mark Malkoff took the bold step of finding out, and this is what he has garnered from his adventure which you can watch in the video above. Gotta love Skype compared to older technologies such as sending smoke signals across a mountain range, or perhaps to flash some light across the length and breadth of the sea with vain hope that a vessel will be able to catch your alert. Apple’s iCloud Service Experienced Downtime Today

Apple’s iCloud Service Experienced Downtime TodayWhile there are many advantages to storing your files on the cloud, one of the main drawbacks would be unreliability – as in, you can never quite tell just when Murphy is going to strike, and you are unable to access those stored files because the cloud service is down. Of course, the same can be said of stashing your files on a physical hard drive, as it could fail you at the most crucial of moments. Regardless, it is best to have the same file stored on both platforms – just in case. Apparently, Apple’s iCloud services were down earlier this morning, where it affected approximately 3 million iOS users – numbering around 1% of the total. Those who were affected by the downtime would have found it nigh impossible to retrieve images from the photostream, to back up applications and data, or even to access documents that have been stored away on the cloud.

Apart from that, sometime late last night Apple did take note that creating new Apple ID’s is not a possibility for everyone, and thankfully, that particular issue has been fixed since. I guess the downtime of a server happens to even the best of them once in a while, and in Apple’s case, it has already gone down several times. Of course, other players such as Microsoft and Google are not exempt either, having experienced their fair share of severe outages in the past, too.

Yahoo Beats Google On Site Visits For July 2013, Says ComScore

Yahoo Beats Google On Site Visits For July 2013, Says ComScoreIn a surprising twist of events (and a welcome one from the folks over at Yahoo, of course), Yahoo has managed to edge out Google as the most visited website in the US for the month of July 2013. Of course, this bit of information was provided by the folks over at ComScore. Just what is the final score line like? Yahoo managed to pick up 196.6 million unique visitors for July 2013, while Team Google racked up 192.3 million unique visitors. This marks the first time that Yahoo made a return to the summit where US web traffic is concerned since May 2011, which is more than two years ago.

This particular way of counting traffic will not include data from Tumblr, which happens to be a company that Yahoo picked up earlier this year for a cool $1 billion, and I would assume if it did, Yahoo would have “won” by a larger margin. I guess it is a good place to signal that Marissa Mayer’s tenure as the company’s CEO is starting to bear fruit, and it has also been reflected in Yahoo’s share price which has nearly doubled in value ever since she helmed the once ailing Internet company. Other than Yahoo and Google, which are the remaining companies that would make up the most visited Web properties? They are Microsoft, Facebook and AOL. Having said that, getting to the top is the easy part compared to staying there.

LG G2 Verizon And AT&T Release Expected Next Month

Rumor has it that LG will release its latest Android flagship smartphone, the G2, on the two largest U.S. carriers next month. Android Central claims to have heard that Verizon LG G2 will be released on September 12th, AT&T will release the device on September 13th. AT&T is said to open pre-orders for the device on September 3rd, customers who place pre-orders will reportedly receive a free folio case for the LG G2. Sprint and T-Mobile will also be offering the device, but their release dates haven’t been rumored yet.

LG has already begun selling its latest flagship in Korea, its home country. Customers in the UK can place their pre-orders, for them and for customers throughout Europe the LG G2 will reportedly launch in the end of September. This information should be taken with a grain of salt, since the aforementioned carriers have yet to officially announce the release date for this device. Verizon recently published its sign-up page for the LG G2, the page didn’t reveal much about the release date, but did tout the exclusive Qi wireless charging capability. We’ll only know the LG G2 U.S. release timeframe for sure once the carriers make an official announcement, lets hope that they do that soon.

Sony VAIO Laptop-Tablet Hybrid Launch At IFA 2013 Teased

The IFA 2013 conference takes place next month in Berlin. A lot of interesting announcements are expected to come out from the conference. It appears that Sony will be officially launching a new VAIO product based on the laptop-tablet hybrid form factor. The company has posted a short teaser video online which shows a piece of paper being folded into various orientations such as a laptop and a tablet.

At the IFA conference last year Sony launched the VAIO Duo 11. Its an 11 inch ultrabook which can also be used as a bulky tablet as the screen can be slid down to cover the entire keyboard. Based on this history, one can speculate that Sony will launch a similar hybrid product, even if the teaser isn’t immediately clear about the product that Sony intends to launch next month. The teaser video ends with “It all begins with one line,” and the Sony and VAIO branding gets sketched by hand on the folded piece of paper. Ubergizmo will be at IFA 2013 next month, we’ll bring you all of the updates from the conference. Other exciting products expected to be announced at the conference include Samsung Galaxy Note 3 as well as the Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

German Government IT Experts Reportedly Consider Windows 8 A ‘Security Risk’

German Government IT Experts Reportedly Consider Windows 8 A Security Risk

When Edward Snowden leaked a number of top secret documents detailing National Security Agency’s spying programs, a lot of questions were raised regarding the alleged participation of some of U.S.A’s top software and internet companies. Microsoft was named in those documents as one of the participants of NSA’s PRISM program. A German publication called Zeit Online claims to have obtained leaked documents that reveal IT experts within the German government believe that Windows 8 is a “security risk.”

According to the publication, the experts contend that Windows 8 contains a backdoor which cannot be closed. They’re concerned about how Windows 8 works with Trusted Platform Modules. It is believed that the backdoor might allow Microsoft and even the NSA to remotely control any computer running Windows 8. From 2015, every computer will come with Windows 8.x, thus leaving simply no way for a user to tell what Microsoft might be doing to their system via remote updates. The experts reportedly conclude that due to the “loss of control over the capabilities of information technology” the security principles of confidentiality and integrity are no longer achievable. While Windows 8 is termed “unusable” due to the alleged backdoor, one document is cited as saying that Windows 7 can be securely used until 2020, after which they will have to find other solutions.

    Lenovo ThinkStation E32 Workstation Announced

Lenovo ThinkStation E32 Workstation AnnouncedLenovo has just announced their spanking new ThinkStation E32 workstation, where it will arrive in not only tower, but small form factors (SFF) to boot. When it comes to some of the models, the E32 will arrive with a 60-day trial of AutoCAD LT 2014 drafting software right out of the box, ensuring that you can get productive the moment the ThinkStation E32 arrives at your doorstep. Design professionals will probably see the ThinkStation E32 as another possible “partner” to work with, especially when it comes to conjuring up precise 2D CAD drawings.

The ThinkStation E32 might be an entry-level workstation that targets professionals who work in computer-aided design, product development and architecture fields, but it is also capable of ensuring support and certifications for the latest ISV applications from Autodesk, Adobe, Dassault Systémes, PTC and Siemens, all without missing a beat. It is tiny, tipping the scales at a mere 17.2lbs (relatively speaking), and will carry key specifications such as having up to Intel Xeon processors E3-1200v3, 32GB RAM, up to 3 hard drives, or a choice of a 256GB or 128GB mSATA drive, and Windows 8 Pro being an operating system choice if you do not like vanilla Windows 8. The Lenovo ThinkStation E32 tower and SFF will arrive from September 6th onwards, starting from approximately $729 and going nowhere but north from there.

Enjoy the picture gallery of the Lenovo ThinkStation E32 workstation right after the jump.

Bing For Schools Launched, Goes Ad Free

Bing For Schools Launched, Goes Ad FreeMicrosoft has decided to make the jump to the realm of education with the official launch of Bing for Schools, which happens to be a new initiative that intends to increase the level of digital literacy among students through the intended input of technology – the Surface RT tablet in this case, making an appearance in classrooms. First previewed in June, Bing for Schools is ad-free, and would come with enhanced privacy protections, adult-content filters, and enhanced specialized learning capabilities.

The pilot program has just kicked off, where Microsoft had begun to recruit schools from all over the country, where among them include the Los Angeles Unified School District, Atlanta Public Schools, Fresno Unified School District, and Detroit Country Day School, so that the ad-free Bing experience will be able to reach over 800,000 students. If a particular school district happens to be facing budget cuts, Microsoft will transform Bing Rewards into Surface RT tablets. Just an overview on what Bing Rewards is all about – it will basically enable any Web user to earn credits as long as they surf the Web. These credits can then be redeemed for gift cards as well as other items, although there is also the option of donating it to altruistic projects such as Bing for Schools. 30,000 Bing Rewards credits will enable a school to receive a Microsoft tablet and Touch Cover, now how about that?
