Are More Cores, Better?
Posted in: Today's ChiliEarlier today, tech media outlets were buzzing because Qualcomm’s VP Anand Chandrasekher presented a deck of slides (to a media group in Taiwan) that included a very specific message: among the things that are “dumb”, “Eight-core CPUs” make it to the top of the list.
This comes in the context of Qualcomm being under pressure from the press, and sometimes for the public, to release an “8-core” processor. Why? Basically because “8>4” – if you listen to the common wisdom. Samsung for example, has had ample marketing success with its Exynos Octa 5 “8-core” processor launched at CES 2013. Mediatek is another company that is getting a lot of attention lately because it claims that it will be the first company to launch what they call a “true 8-core” processor for mobiles (official product page). If one were to remain where they are without any progression, it is unavoidable that your competitors would eventually catch up with you if they were to be behind in the first place, before overtaking you. Twitter knows this basic principle as well, which is why they have introduced updates to their service from time to time, and this has definitely helped them remain in business, so to speak, for the past seven years and counting. For those who have been keeping track, text-based search results are not going to cut the mustard these days, as folks are looking for people, pictures and social context.
Twitter intends to keep up with what people want, and they have updated their own search bar with socially aware suggestions, including previous search data and additional robust results. Of course, this does not mean that the general search experience has changed, but overall the changes do make the experience better than before. Do you like the new features that accompany Twitter this time around?

If there is one thing we can all agree on, it’s that being at work is different than from being at home. Well, unless you work at home or live at work, which, um, maybe we can’t agree on anything. But! The things you do on the computer at work should probably be different from your Internetting at home. But sometimes you forget! Sometimes you use your work computer to go to porn sites. Sometimes you click a NSFW picture from your cubicle. Sometimes you opened Excel at home *GASP*.
Gamers are extremely particular about the kind of innards that their hardware comes with, and if one has the time and money, they would prefer to build a gaming PC from scratch using all the parts that they would like to have (and can afford, of course), instead of getting a pre-configured machine. A laptop, however, might be a wee bit more tricky, but CyberPowerPC’s unveiling of the Fang Taipan M2 gaming laptop might just turn the tables in a Burger King manner, where you can “have it your way”.
Why do we say so? For starters, the Fang Taipan M2 prides itself in being a gaming laptop that can be customized by each purchaser. Take the number of GPUs that you can opt from – dual NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M in SLI mode and dual AMD Radeon HD 8970M in CrossFire mode is not out of the question, while the Fang Taipan M2 will also be able to accommodate the Intel Core i7-4930MX Extreme Edition CPU, although others might settle for something less. Memory-wise, how about support for up to 32GBs of dual-channel, high-performance Kingston HyperX or Corsair Vengeance Memory? Your eyes will be pleased to see the Full HD 17.3″(16:9) LED-backlit display in action, while your ears are treated to audio from an Onkyo speaker system which is supported by premium Sound Blaster X-Fi MB3 audio technology. The base price for the Fang Taipan M2 starts at $1,869 and goes north from there, depending on your choice of parts within.

Just how connected is your life when you take stock of all the devices in your pockets and bag? I am quite sure that most of us would have taken the built-in Wi-Fi connectivity for granted where a feature on any decent device worth its salt is concerned these days. Well, there are moments in life when Murphy just loves to prove his law on you, and you are stuck in some place where there is no 3G or 4G LTE signal available, and the Wi-Fi rates there are just way too expensive to justify hooking up to the internet to scratch that social network itch. Good to know then, that this will not be the case if you are a Skype Premium subscriber, as you are then eligible for Skype WiFi for free throughout the entire month of August.
Yes sir, no longer do you need to purchase Wi-Fi according to your needs and drain your Skype credits along the way, Skype Premium subscribers are able to take advantage of this offer for the entire month, and to know that Skype WiFi is available at more than 1 million hotspots worldwide is another comforting thing to hear. Just remember that Skype WiFi is available on Windows desktop, Windows 8, Mac OS X, Linux, iOS and Android only at the moment, and Internet access will remain subject to the terms and conditions of the hotspot service provider. In case you are wondering, this is not the first time Skype is offering free WiFi, as they have done so at airports and conferences in the past.

The Universal Serial Bus is getting a sweet upgrade. The USB alliance has made official the name of the 10Gbps specification for USB, and they’re calling it USB 3.1. While only USB 3.1 products will get the faster speeds, the new specification will be backwards compatible with USB 3.0 and USB 2.0. While Intel is […]
Outlook.com Turns One
Posted in: Today's ChiliA year ago, Microsoft launched Outlook.com, the spanking new email service that also saw the ouster of the long serving Hotmail (with some missing emails in tow). Sure, anything new would require one to get used to it, but thankfully, the learning curve of adjusting to Outlook.com from Hotmail did not prove to be a steep one for most. Apart from a changed user experience, Outlook.com also came with a slew of new features as well as integration with other Microsoft products (sounds like a page out of Google, no?). Since then, Microsoft did do their bit to roll out updates to the Outlook.com service over the past year, ranging from fixes to improvements that have been highlighted in consumer feedback. In fact, we are looking a whopping 600 additions, changes and improvements that were packaged in 34 feature releases in the past year alone.
Well, Microsoft’s Dick Craddock did note that “the average number of monthly feedback submissions for Outlook.com is about 50 times what we received with Hotmail.” Are you happy with your Outlook.com experience so far? [Outlook.com Blog]
