Gorilla Glass NBT Protects Touchscreen Laptops

Gorilla Glass NBT Protects Touchscreen Laptops

Excessive use can lead to a laptop display being scratched. High-end touchscreen laptops these days often feature Corning’s Gorilla Glass, which gained popularity back in 2007 when it was specifically designed for the first iPhone. Gorilla Glass is tough and protects a smartphone or tablet’s display when it is dropped. If you drop a high-end laptop, chances are you might end up damaging much more than the display itself. So in that particular case, the focus is towards safeguarding the display against scratches, not potentially damaging falls. That is why Corning has created Gorilla Glass NBT, a new solution that protects touchscreen laptop displays against scratches.

Gorilla Glass NBT ensures that the display is able to withstand any weakness that may result from a scratch. Corning says that complaint rate for scratches on touchscreen laptops is higher than other devices, so there’s an obvious need for this product. This new solution is expensive, but Corning says that Gorilla Glass NBT provides 8 to 10 times more damage resistance for just 1 or 2 percent of the device’s retail price. Dell is one of the first vendors to integrate the new Gorilla Glass NBT solution in their upcoming touchscreen laptops due this fall.

Updated Retina MacBook Pro Rumored To Be Delayed Until October

Updated Retina MacBook Pro Rumored To Be Delayed Until October

If Apple’s recently announced MacBook Air laptops with Intel’s Haswell processors aren’t powerful enough for your liking, or does not have a high-end display resolution, then chances are you might be in the market for a Retina MacBook Pro. Unfortunately according to recent rumors, it seems that if you wanted a Retina MacBook Pro with Retina display, you might have to wait until October. This was reported by the China Timeswho are claiming that suppliers are apparently having yield problems with the Retina display, thus delaying internal timetables and pushing the availability of the laptops to October.

Some analysts have reported that the new MacBook Pros are expected in September, so obviously this delay would have thrown off their predictions. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but if you were hoping for a Retina MacBook Pro in September with the new Intel Haswell processors, chances are you could be in for a disappointment, but then again a month wait isn’t too long, right? In the meantime we will keep our eyes peeled for more information regarding this alleged delay.

Bing Notification Platform Alerts Users Of Illegal Images

Bing Notification Platform Alerts Users Of Illegal ImagesBing prides itself in being the first of the major search engines to show off a popup warning to folks who happen to live in the UK, and this popup warning will happen only when one searches intentionally for sites that hold images of child abuse. Known as the Bing Notification Platform, it will provide a warning before following that up with details concerning a counselling service. This particular popup would trigger each time ‘blacklisted’ terms that have been compiled from a list by the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre is entered into the search engine.

It seems that the Bing Notification Platform’s purpose is to “stop those who may be drifting towards trying to find illegal child abuse content on the web via search engines”, or at least that is what Microsoft shared. In fact, someone from Bing spoke up, saying, “If someone in the UK tries to use search terms on Bing which can only indicate they are looking for illegal child abuse content, they will activate the Bing Notification Platform which will produce an on-screen notification telling them that child abuse content is illegal.”

Newsmy Newman Q20 Netbook Tablet Hybrid

Newsmy Newman Q20 Netbook Tablet HybridFor those of you who were around when Nokia ruled the mobile phone scene, and there was no such thing as a smartphone yet, let alone a color display on your handset, I am quite sure that you would have come across the Nokia Communicator. Sure, it was far from being the most svelte nor smallest handset out there, but in terms of raw computing power among phones, not many others came close. We are talking about a mobile device that is capable of letting you work on your documents on the go, arriving in a horizontal clamshell form factor. Open it up and you will be presented with a QWERTY keyboard to make life easier when it comes to typing out long documents.

Well, the Communicator family did not last that long down the road, not with the advent of true blue smartphones. In fact, the netbook ended up being hugely popular for a while as the portable computing device of choice that offers a decent level of productivity without bogging you down, but even so, it was phased out eventually with most major PC manufacturers ditching the netbook line altogether. Newsmy of China has not, however, and decided to breathe new life into the netbook world with a netbook/tablet hybrid that they call the Newman Q20.

The Newman Q20 is an 8.9” device that runs on an Intel Atom processor, sporting an adjustable touchscreen display which allows you to use it as a tablet as and when required. A QWERTY keyboard, touchscreen display, a 1.6GHz Intel Atom N2600 Cedar Trail dual-core processor, 2GB RAM, 32GB of internal memory, an 8.9” 1024 x 600 pixel touchscreen display, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Ethernet and HDMI connectivity and a front-facing camera rounds off the list of specifications, all running on Windows 8.

Dell Precision M3800 workstation surfaces in official “Coming Soon” page

Last week, a Dell spokesperson confirmed to SlashGear that the company was working on the Dell Precision M3800, with plans to unveil it later in the year. Images and specs for the powerhouse laptop appeared online, but now Dell has an official page up giving us a somewhat detailed look at the machine, including specs and a couple videos.

The Dell spokesperson told us last week, ““Dell is introducing the thinnest and lightest workstation ever later this year. The Dell Precision M3800 is the first mobile workstation that is less than 3/4 of an inch, at 18mm, weighs only 4.5lbs and offers certified performance and dependability for creative professionals. We are not releasing or confirming any additional details today but stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks.”

Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait long to get some official details. According to the “Coming Soon” page on Dell’s website, the Precision M3800 weighs in at 4.5 pounds, and measures in at a svelte 18mm in thickness, as the spokesperson state. As the leak had said, the display will be a QHD+ resolution of 3,200 x 1,800, a jump over the MacBook Pro 15′s 2,880 x 1,800 resolution. There will also be multi-touch support.

Inside, there’s a fourth-generation Intel Core i7 processor, and graphics come by way of NVIDIA Quadro. The Dell website doesn’t get too far into the details, but according to the leak that surfaced last week, this will be a K1100M GPU offering from the maker, and there will be up to 2GB of dedicated memory available.

That’s the extent of the information that Dell is providing on the laptop at this time, but word has it the machine features four USB 3.0 slots, an HDMI port, and an SD card reader. There’s no Ethernet, which is unfortunate for some users, instead being replaced with a dongle for those who need it. The battery options are also pegged at 61Wh or 91Wh.

Price is said to be between $1699 and $1999 USD.
