Back in 2013 during Apple’s WWDC event, the Cupertino company unveiled OS X Mavericks which is Apple’s latest computer operating system at the moment. The OS was released later that year as a free upgrade for all Mac users whose computers could support it. It was a surprising move by Apple as previously they had charged for OS upgrades.
Naturally this led to more users opting to upgrading to Mavericks compared to previous builds where users might not be able to justify paying the upgrade fee. Patents can be used for good and for evil. For evil we’ve seen how some companies have leveraged their patents and use them to sue other companies for huge sums of money over something trivial, or at least for those companies to pay them a settlement. At the same time we’ve seen how disruptive patents can be, like in the case of Apple versus Samsung where the legal battles have been waged for a long time already.
Well thankfully Microsoft does not appear to be too interested in long drawn-out legal fights and has recently come to a patent licensing agreement with computer manufacturer Dell. Yes sir, this is the new structure in the company known as Oculus VR after it was snapped up by the social network giant for a cool $2 billion, where that bit of news caused quite a ripple across news portals yesterday. The co-founder and lead designer of id Software oversaw a slew of technological developments within the gaming industry, and having left the company in 2013 to join Oculus VR, it goes without saying that he is now under Facebook’s payroll.
