iMacs Get 256GB And 512GB Flash Storage Options On Apple Store

iMacs Get 256GB And 512GB Flash Storage Options On Apple StoreIf you have browsed through the Apple Store for an iMac lately, you might have come across something that would make you smile – especially if you are looking for a whole lot more storage space on your iMac where flash storage is concerned. It looks as though the Apple Store has been updated to offer 256GB and 512GB flash storage options for its range of 21.5” iMacs.

Smaller iMacs will be equipped with a 1TB hard drive by default, where the other option used to be just a 1TB Fusion drive that will cost you another $250. Right now, you are able to do away with the 1TB hard drive by replacing it with a 256GB or a 512GB SSD when you are busy configuring your iMac over at the Apple Store. This move marks the first time that Apple has thrown in SSD options for their 21.5” iMacs, although in the past, they have introduced a $900 768GB SSD storage configuration for its 27” iMacs. Which storage capacity would you gun for?

Raspberry Pi Gets Water Cooling Solution

Raspberry Pi Gets Water Cooling SolutionThe Raspberry Pi is certainly one hot ticket item when it was first released, targeting hobbyists who want to build their very own computers without having to sell an arm and a leg. While this low-powered mini computer will run on a 700MHz ARM11 processor, one is able to obtain more performance out of it by overclocking it to 1GHz. Of course, if you want to go all out, then the processor might get wee bit unstable, but there is nothing quite like a custom cooling solution to bring down the heat a notch (or two).

Check out this water-cooled “Wet Pi” project that you see above, as it hails from bit-tech forum member Phame. Of course, in the first place, there is no good reason to make use of water to ensure that a Raspberry Pi remains nice and cool, after all, it will never notch up the temperatures that a high-end gaming computer would. Still, this is a fun project to dive into, and it is one of those “because we can” scenarios, where the custom case is equipped with neon-pink water pumped to three of the hottest spots on the board. The water pump itself will be powered by the Raspberry Pi board, so all you need to keep this system running is a single power adapter, now how about that?

Seagate Slim Offers Storage Without The Bulk

Seagate Slim Offers Storage Without The BulkSeagate is no stranger to the portable hard drive market, having come up with some hits of theirs in the past. Remember the Seagate GoFlex Slim Drive, which was touted to be the slimmest portable external hard drive in the world when it was revealed a couple of years back? Well, Seagate is still in the game of delivering quality storage on the go for the masses, and their latest attempt would see the Seagate Slim being introduced to the masses.

One thing is for sure, the Seagate Slim lives up to its name, being a wee bit larger in dimensions compared to the iPhone 5 from Apple, making it the ideal storage companion for folks who want a sleek and portable look and feel without compromising on space. Apart from the hardware that delivers 500GB of storage space in a chassis that measures a mere 9.6mm thin, the Seagate Slim also comes with Seagate Dashboard, which is an easy-to-use backup software that paves the way for one-click or scheduled backup and the ability to back up Facebook and Flickr albums. Compatible with USB 2.0, the Seagate Slim sports a speedy USB 3.0 interface to keep up with the times. Depending on the retailer, the Seagate Slim would cost you anywhere from $80 to $100, backed by a 2-year warranty.

Video Messaging Comes To Skype For Windows 8

Video Messaging Comes To Skype For Windows 8

Skype has been on a roll recently. They are making a lot of improvements to the service in order to make it easier for users to connect with people that they need to. Just last week, Skype was integrated with Outlook.com, allowing users to make calls directly from their email inbox. This integration with Outlook.com is due to the fact that Microsoft now owns Skype. Recently the video messaging feature was added to Skype’s desktop application for Windows, today an update brings the same feature to the Skype app for Windows 8. The Windows desktop version which brought this feature to PCs running Windows 7 or higher is actually the latest beta build of Skype, whereas the Windows 8 app is the consumer build.

The service has been testing this particular feature on a number of platforms such as iOS and Android, and is now available in preview form for them. Its very easy to send a video message through the app. Simply click on the + located under a contact’s picture and there’ll be an option to send them a video message. Once it is recorded and sent, it will be visible in that contact’s chat feed. The update app can now be downloaded from Windows Store.

Microsoft Completes Shifting Hotmail Users To Outlook.com, Now Has 400 Million Accounts

Microsoft Completes Shifting Hotmail Users To Outlook.com, Now Has 400 Million Accounts

Microsoft announced today that it has completed the process of shifting Hotmail customers to Outlook.com. In a little more than six weeks the company has transferred some 150 petabytes of email data safely and securely to its new email service. Today they’ve also announced a couple of new features for Outlook.com, these include the improved integration of SkyDrive and SMTP send, which will make it easier for users to send emails from different email addresses.

Outlook.com came out of preview in February and at the time it already had over 60 million active accounts. Now with Hotmail accounts having been brought over, Outlook.com touts 400 million active accounts from all parts of the world. The deeper SkyDrive integration means that users will now be able to insert files and pictures in emails straight from SkyDrive itself. The integration rolls out today and will be made available worldwide in a couple of weeks. SMTP send enables Outlook.com users to send and receive emails from other accounts. Email sent through a different account will go through that account’s SMTP server, the recipient will not know that the email has been sent through Outlook.com. The team assures us that there are more improvements to come in the near future.

Apple tacks on 256GB and 512GB SSD to iMac storage options

If you’re in the market for a new iMac and want it to be as fast as possible, naturally a solid state drive is the way to go, and Apple seems to agree with that. The Cupertino-based company has added 256GB and 512GB solid state options in the online Apple Store, allowing customers to boost the speed of their new rig if they don’t need a lot of storage space.

imac-2012-18-SlashGear--580x407

These new options are tacked on to the 1TB drives that Apple initially only offered (either a traditional 5400rpm drive, or a “Fusion” drive). Of course, not everyone needs 1TB of storage, so offering lower space but with faster speeds is always welcome. However, it’ll cost you a pretty penny, as the 256GB option costs $300 extra, while the 512GB version costs $600 more.

Apple has offered solid state options with the 27-inch iMac, but only offering 768GB of solid state storage for a $900 upgrade price. The company also gave the option of either 1TB or 3TB hard drives, with Fusion drive options available as well. However, this is the first time that the 21.5-inch iMac is getting the choice of flash storage.

Apple’s Fusion drive includes a mixture between flash storage and hard drive storage, meaning that packed in there with a traditional 1TB hard drive is a 128GB flash drive to keep things fast, while still providing a lot of storage space to play around with. Hybrid drives like this have been a go-to choice for users who want SSD-type speeds without paying a fortune for it.

Intel Iris Graphics Architecture Doubles Graphics Speed

Intel Iris Graphics Architecture Doubles Graphics SpeedIntel has announced Iris, its latest generation of graphics processing architecture that will be included in the Intel Core 4th generation processors (CPUs). We haven’t been able to run our own benchmarks with the new chip yet, but according to Intel’s own measurements, the new Intel Iris graphics architecture is 2X to 3X faster than Intel’s previous graphics architecture. This is a huge and unexpected jump, especially considering that in time (but not right now), every Intel CPUs will be equipped with a variant of Iris. (more…)

Yahoo Picks Up Astrid, The To-Do App

Yahoo Picks Up Astrid, The To Do AppSome folks swear that life is made a whole lot easier if one were to carry around a to-do list, and I do not deny the possibility that a to-do list would help the unorganized get more organized. Well, the paper-based to-do list has certainly been “ported” over with the smartphone and tablet revolution, where we have seen our fair share of apps to help you stay organized. Astrid is one such app, and old school Internet giant Yahoo has picked them up.

Of course, this acquisition would mean that Astrid will continue to offer support for the task management app over the course of the next 90 days, although it is expected that some users could be on the receiving end of refunds where paid subscriptions are concerned. Yahoo issued a statement on this acquisition, saying, “We’re excited to welcome Astrid to Yahoo!’s mobile team. Their background in personalized mobile experiences is impressive, and we know they will be a huge asset to as we continue to re-imagine our products.” First Summly, then Astrid, what company would Yahoo buy next?
