Most Workplaces Still Use Internet ExplorerRemember the early days of web browsers/ Netscape Navigator proved to be hands-down the winner, the 800lbs gorilla among the crowd, but eventually, it resembled more of a dinosaur and went extinct rather than thrive like mammals. According to analysts over at Net Applications have come up with a rather startling and interesting conclusion, that around the world, Microsoft’s different versions of Internet Explorer still remain the most widely used web browser among PC owners. StatCounter, however, says otherwise, touting that Google’s Chrome is top dog in the world of PC web browsers.

How did Net Applications and StatCounter arrive at their respective conclusions? Well, they too, cast a glance at the big picture where recording browser use is concerned. Based on a survey of 7,295 IT workers, it seems that the firm Internet Explorer still commands a market share of 40.2% in businesses, while Google’s Chrome remains some ways behind at 27.9%, with Firefox in third place at 25.4% and Apple’s Safari web browser far down the rungs at fourth with a mere 1.8%. Quick, take a glance at all the cubicles in your office, which web browser version are they using?

Microsoft Tool Lets You Mount ISOs for Windows XP, Windows Vista And Windows 7

Microsoft Tool Lets You Mount ISOs for Windows XP, Windows Vista And Windows 7Microsoft has just rolled out a spanking new tool that they claim ought to keep some folks more than happy – especially for those who have been having a hard time searching for the right software in order to mount .ISOs in older versions of Windows. This particular application from the folks over at Microsoft would enable users of Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7 to mount ISO disk image files, where they will function as a virtual CD-ROM drive, and this would definitely go a long way in assisting the installation process of Windows 8 in addition to other software, of course.

Microsoft has a caveat emptor so to speak, where they claim that while they are the ones who built this app from ground up, users ought not to expect any kind of support, as the installation process would be done at the user’s own risk. Of course, folks who are already running Windows 8 on their respective machines need not install this application since the operating system itself already supports native ISO mounting. The app’s name? A straightforward Virtual CD-ROM Control Panel.

Digital Storm Vanquish fights back against DIY gaming rigs

Many avid PC gamers usually opt for building their own computer, citing lower costs of components over pre-built machines. However, custom PC maker Digital Storm has something to say about that, with the introduction of the new Vanquish gaming PC line. The new computers look to settle the DIY debate once and for all.

Screen Shot 2013-04-24 at 1.21.47 PM

Gaming rigs from boutique computer makers usually cost a couple thousand dollars, but Digital Storm is aiming to put that fact to rest with their Vanquish lineup of gaming PCs that start at $699. The entry level rig comes packing with an AMD FX-4300, 8GB of RAM, 1TB HDD, Radeon HD 7750 graphics, and Windows 7.

Digital Storm says that this only $38 more than what you would pay for these same parts on Newegg, with the company’s most-expensive Vanquish rig only costing $58 more than the same build from parts on Newegg. Of course, this isn’t a huge difference and you’re obviously still paying a bit more if you bought from Digital Storm.

However, this isn’t the cheapest gaming rig we’ve seen from a boutique computer maker, iBUYPOWER’s newer Revolt gaming rig lineup starts at just $499. We ended up reviewing one of their high-end Revolt builds, and we liked it a lot. However, there’s simply nothing more satisfying than building your own PC. No matter which way you go, it seems Digital Storm is at the ready for when you decide purchase a pre-built machine.

AMD Radeon HD 7990 Announced With 4k Resolution Support

AMD Radeon HD 7990 Announced With 4k Resolution SupportBack in 2012, NVIDIA revealed their monster graphics card, the GeForce GTX 690 which would cost gamers a whopping $999. Now it looks like it’s AMD’s turn to turn things up with their latest GPU, the Radeon HD 7990 which like the GTX 690, is definitely not for the casual gamer. Priced at $1,000 and available in about two weeks’ time, this is a GPU that definitely has a lot of power behind it as the company is claiming that the GPU will have no problem running games at 4k resolution and maximum detail setting!

The Radeon HD7990 will feature over 8 terraflops of processing power, 8.6 billion transistors, 6GB of RAM, PCI Express 3.0 support and a new cooling system which supposedly will be 3dB quieter than the NVIDIA Titan, and 10dB softer than the GTX 690. Like we said above, this GPU is definitely not for the casual gamer, and while 4k resolutions have yet to become the standard, we guess the hardcore gamer looking to future-proof their gaming rig might see this as a worthwhile investment.

iPad Display Unit Hacked To Run As External Monitor At Full Resolution

iPad Display Unit Hacked To Run As External Monitor At Full ResolutionThe iPad 4 sports a pretty impressive resolution at 2048×1536, a display which Apple refers to as Retina which is also higher than Full HD displays at 1920×1080, a display which some notebooks are still missing. Unfortunately monitors with higher than Full HD resolution aren’t exactly cheap, and if you could, wouldn’t you want to turn your iPad’s display into an external monitor? Granted you could probably do that with Air Display, it means you will need an iPad to begin with, but a Polish hacker by the name of Emeryth decided to save money but purchasing the display unit online, before hacking it to run as an external monitor at full resolution, a project which cost him about $70 in total ($55 for the display, and $14 for a DisplayPort connector). This is probably a project not for everyone since it does require a bit of technical skills, but if you’re interested and think you have the chops, or simply because you’re curious, Emeryth has detailed the process online at his website.

Apples WWDC Starts On June 10 With Focus On iOS 7, OS X

We’re about two months away from summer’s official start, which means not only will we be able to wear our no-longer fashionable jean shorts out in public, but it also means Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference, or WWDC, will soon be upon us. Apple has made the official announcement as their biggest conference of the year will take place in San Francisco from June 10 – 14.

Apple promises this year’s WWDC will give an in-depth look at the next version of iOS and OS X, which they certainly gave us a glimpse of both operating systems at last year’s WWDC. Last year’s WWDC also marked the launch of the MacBook Pro with Retina, which has many speculating the company will reveal a new Mac Pro soon. Google’s $30 Million Wavii Purchase Mirrors Yahoo’s Summly Acquisition

Google’s $30 Million Wavii Purchase Mirrors Yahoo’s Summly AcquisitionYesterday, we read on how Yahoo has already integrated Summly into their Yahoo iPhone app after picking it up from a teen sometime late last month for a cool $30 million. Just what is Summly? Well, to sum it up (pun not intended), Summly is a mobile news app which was specially developed to be a mobile news app. Google does not seem to want to fall behind the acquisition race, and have also forked out a similar amount of money to the tune of $30 million to pick up Seattle-based Wavii, the company behind a news summarization app, too.

This successful bid from the Internet search giant arrived after Apple did show some interest in picking up Wavii last time to incorporate their natural language technology into Siri, which so happens to be Apple’s voice-activated personal assistant feature. The deal has yet to be announced publicly, but it is more or less a done deal, although both Google and Wavii have declined to comment. It would be interesting to see how Wavii’s purchase would enhance the user experience for Google fans.
