Lenovo Not Convinced Of Intel’s Plans For Dual Booting Windows And Android Devices

Lenovo Not Convinced Of Intels Plans For Dual Booting Windows And Android DevicesCES is a time where companies show off their latest products and technological innovations, an this year ASUS had an interesting device called the Transformer Book Duet which was a tablet that not only could run Windows, but could dual boot to Android if the user chose to. It certainly seems to address the problem that some customers have when deciding if they should get a Windows tablet or an Android one, unless money isn’t an issue and you can just get both. Rarely is that the case as this is one of the technological innovations that Intel is quite proud of, where during their Intel CES keynote speech, the company’s CEO revealed their plans to promote additional products that could dual boot both Windows and Android at the same time.

Is this our one-size-fits-all solution? For some yes it would, but for others, namely Lenovo, they don’t seem overly enthused about Intel’s plans. Speaking to VentureBeat, Lenovo’s North American president Jay Parker revealed that he wasn’t overly convinced about Intel’s plans. According to Parker, “I don’t see it [Intel’s Android on Windows plan] as being a mass-market opportunity in the near- or maybe even long-term […] I believe the market can support multiple operating systems and ecosystems.” As it stands Lenovo has a whole host of products running Microsoft’s Windows platform, but at the same time are promoting their Android products as well, meaning that by combining platforms and thus selling less products, it would seem as though there really isn’t much to be gained.

What do you guys think of Intel’s plans for dual booting devices in the future? Are you enamoured by the idea of a single product that can run multiple platforms, or would you rather have a dedicated product for a single platform instead?

Matias Ergo Pro Is An Ergonomic Mechanical Keyboard

Matias Ergo Pro Is An Ergonomic Mechanical KeyboardKeyboards come in all shapes and sizes and types, ranging from rubber domed keys to mechanical keys which are typically favored by writers, coders, and even gamers due to their increased tactile feedback along with the satisfying “clack” of the keys. For the most part, mechanical keyboard designs are pretty straightforward, save for the gaming versions which might come with additional macro keys and a more outlandish design to appeal to the gamer. But what about the user who wants mechanical keys and ergonomics at the same time? Unfortunately there aren’t too many solutions like that out there, but the Matias Ergo Pro is one of them.

Unveiled at CES 2014, Matias announced its new mechanical keyboard, the Ergo Pro, which not only features mechanical keys but sports an ergonomic design for the user who spends endless hours on end in front of their computer and is looking for a more ergonomic experience. Featuring 3 USB 2.0 ports, media control keys, and dedicated keys for copying, pasting, cutting, and undo, the Matias Ergo Pro will retail for a whopping $200, which is one of the more expensive mechanical keyboards we’ve come across to date. The company’s founder believes this price is justified due to mechanical keys having typically longer life, and also due to how much better it is to type on, which we have to say boils down to personal preference.

Compatible with both Windows and Mac computers, it will be made available come August 2014, but customers will be able to pre-order the keyboard via the company’s website.

Gigabyte Announces Aorus X7 Gaming Laptop

Gigabyte Announces Aorus X7 Gaming LaptopIf you’ve ever built your own computer, Gigabyte is a name you’ve definitely come across several times. The company manufacturers a variety of components for computers, such as motherboards and graphic cards, just to name a few. Well it looks like Gigabyte wants to help you out with a gaming rig in a more direct way as the company has announced a gaming laptop of their own make called the Aorus X7. While the Aorus might not be much to look at, at least compared to bright neon lights of the Alienware lineup, it is impressive as it measures only 0.9-inches thick, which is admittedly pretty thin as far as gaming laptops are concerned, and sports a full aluminum chassis which should lend itself to that “premium” feeling.

In terms of hardware, the Aorus X7 is equally impressive as it comes with an NVIDIA GTX 765M SLI as its GPU of choice, and will be powered by Intel’s Core i7-4700HQ that is clocked anywhere between 2.4GHz to 3.4GHz. It will also feature a 17.3” Full HD display and will come with either 4GB or 8GB of DDR3L RAM that can be upgraded to a maximum of 32GB. As far as storage goes, users can choose up to 1TB of hard disk space. The laptop will also come with the usual ports, such as USB 3.0, USB 2.0, HDMI, and so on. What makes this a more compelling gaming laptop is that its keyboards come with additional macro buttons that you can program, and also a software interface that allows you to control things such as fan speed, which might be essential if you’re running something particularly intensive.

According to Gigabyte, they expect the Aorus X7 to be made available in March and will be priced between $2,099 to $2,799, depending on how you configure it.

ZTE To Ship Own LTE USB Dongles

ZTE To Ship Own LTE USB DonglesThe folks over at ZTE have just announced that they will be shipping a home-grown LTE modem within one of its very own LTE USB dongles. If you are one who loves to dive knee deep into model numbers and names, then it would be better known as the ZTE ZX297502. This would come across as a second-generation LTE modem from ZTE. According to Jim Mielke, VP of engineering at ABI Research, “ZTE recently announced the WiseFone 7510 LTE modem for release early this year but the 7510 is a third generation LTE chip. The first generation was mainly a prototype; the second generation was the first real production chip and is certainly the basis for the 28nm 7510 scheduled to be released early 2014.”

The ZX297502 would strictly remain as a modem baseband; where it is accompanied by ADI and ACP transceivers, not to mention a TI power management unit (PMU). ABI Research has also performed a complete teardown of the ZTE LTE chipset as well as the accompanying chips, where one would be able to gain access to the complete bill of materials alongside rough cost estimates, high resolution dismantling and board photos, and component die photos and X-rays. We wonder when will we see these products being used widely by the masses. [Press Release]

New Lenovo Chromebooks Coming Later This Year

New Lenovo Chromebooks Coming Later This Year

The Beijing based Lenovo announced a slew of new products at the International Consumer Electronics Show this week, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have anything left up its sleeve. 2014 is the year Lenovo is going to push further into the Chromebook market. President of Lenovo North America, Jay Parker, has confirmed that the company has plans to release multiple Chromebooks by summer 2014. The notebooks will be available in multiple price ranges with varying configurations.

It won’t be Lenovo’s first foray into the Chromebook market. The company has already released some notebooks that are powered by Google’s cloud based OS, but they are predominantly focused towards the education sector. With its new Chromebooks, Lenovo aims to make a push for the wider consumer market. The company believes this market will accelerate within the next year, which means that its definitely looking to cash in on that. Sales of Chromebooks, particularly in the U.S., surged in 2013 indicating that the market is tilting towards these low-cost, heavily internet dependent notebooks. Parker was also asked about Lenovo’s plans of entering the wearable technology market, since that’s what almost every other company is doing. Parker says that Lenovo is going to take a wait-and-see approach before it decides to jump headfirst into said market.

Windows XP For Microsoft Security Essentials Ends This April 8

Windows XP For Microsoft Security Essentials Ends This April 8Microsoft is not going to change their minds concerning support for Windows XP, where such support is still on track to end 90 days from now, and the date in question would be April 8th, 2014. Apart from that, the software giant has also confirmed quietly what had been making its way across the grapevine, that Microsoft will also stop offering Microsoft Security Essentials for the Windows XP operating system after April 8th as well.

This bit of news arrived through a new revision of Microsoft’s Windows XP end-of-support web page which sported that little bit of detail. To be more specific, it read, ”Microsoft will also stop providing Microsoft Security Essentials for download on Windows XP on this date.” I guess that’s that, and all good things must always come to an end. Still, if you want to continue using Windows XP, it always pays to be careful, and Microsoft has recommended a bunch of best practices to follow in order to protect your PC from any unwanted intrusion, including running an up-to-date antivirus, applying security updates regularly for the remaining software installed, as well as using modern software that will feature advanced security technologies, followed by the support of regular security updates. We have been warned, that’s for sure. Would this make you ditch Windows XP and upgrade to a newer version of Windows?

    France Fines Google 150,000 Euros

France Fines Google 150,000 EurosGoogle and France are in the limelight again, this time round with France’s data protection watchdog having slapped a 150,000 Euro fine on Google. The reason behind this fine? Apparently, Google has not complied with a three-month ultimatum that was issued some time ago in order to bring its practices on tracking and storing user information to be aligned with local law. The privacy watchdog is called CNIL, and it has also asked Google to post this particular decision on its google.fr homepage for 48 hours, where it must be done within eight days of being officially notified of the ruling.

This is not the first time that Google has been fined in France, and it remains to be seen whether it will be the last, either. The bone of contention is this – there was a new approach to user data that Google kicked off in March a couple of years ago, where it comprised of consolidating its 60 privacy policies into a single one, merging data collected on individual users across its services, where among them include YouTube, Gmail and social network Google+, without giving users a way to opt out. A Google France spokesman has taken note of this decision, and will mull over further action.
