Gmail Gets New Insert Photo Button

Gmail Gets New Insert Photo ButtonMost of us use our smartphones these days to capture plenty of images on the move, as carrying around a DSLR is just not as convenient. There is also the option of a Micro Four Thirds camera or other system cameras too, but those too, require you to tote around another device which might end up as inconvenient. Thankfully, the smartphones of today do come with far better photo-taking ability than before, and are ideal for most ordinary shots. For those who love snapping photos with their smartphones, you will be pleased that Google wants to help save your time by letting you insert your Auto Backup photos from your smartphone into Gmail messages on the web, thanks to the new Insert Photo button.

Whenever you click on the button, you will be able to access all of the photos in an instant, where they have been backed up from your mobile devices, beginning with the most recent content. Should you opt to upload and organize your photos into albums on Google Photos, you will also be able to share the whole album without any worries. Apart from that, you are also able to resize images as you compose messages simply by dragging on any corner to ensure that your snapshot is picture perfect.

Have you already made use of these new features in Gmail on the web? It is supposed to have rolled out today, and if you have not given it a go, do remember to turn on Auto Backup, where you can then include photos easily from your latest adventures in emails to family and friends. [Press Release]

Microsoft Is “Done” With The Scroogled Campaign

Microsoft Is Done With The Scroogled CampaignMicrosoft’s Scroogled campaign is one of the marketing tactics that Microsoft has employed in the past to make Google look bad, and to make themselves look better by comparison. The Scroogled videos do not hold back and point out every flaw and weakness that Microsoft believes is present in Google’s products and services, like Chromebooks, Gmail, and even went as far as selling Scroogled clothing and accessories.

However could it be that Microsoft has had enough and has decided to put things to an end? We heard back in 2013 how that was a possibility and in a recent report on ZDNet, it seems like the Scroogled campaign has indeed come to a close. (more…)

21% Of Windows XP Users Weren’t Aware Of Support Cutoff [Survey]

21% Of Windows XP Users Werent Aware Of Support Cutoff [Survey]We know that there are many out there who aren’t pleased by Microsoft’s decision to end support for Windows XP. Given that the software is four generations old, it was only a matter of time before support was pulled and it is completely understandable. Avast, the company behind the anti-virus software for computers, was one of those who voiced their displeasure.

In a recent survey the company conducted, they found that out of the Windows XP users they survey, a surprising 21% of those users did not even know that support for Windows XP had been pulled in the early part of April. This is despite the amount of coverage that the topic had gotten and the amount of attention Microsoft was attempting to draw to it. (more…)

Voxeet 2.0 with Dial-in Support and Voxeet for Mac – Review

Voxeet 2.0 with Dial in Support and Voxeet for Mac ReviewVoxeet is an impressive audio conference application that provides 3DHD sound. Launched at DEMOFall 2012, Voxeet is available for free for Windows, Android and iOS, and a week ago, the company launched the Mac version alongside its 2.0 update. With Voxeet 2.0 you can get dial-in numbers that let you dial in to a conference for free from over 40 countries worldwide, or switch your call from a bad internet connection to a local phone line in one click.

The briefing was done with Voxeet and we were 4 participants total. During that call the 3DHD sound was crystal clear and I was able to try the audio conferencing app’s main features.

First of all, Voxeet’s most unique offering compared to main competitor Skype is the 3DHD sound that allows users to hear each participant voice from different directions, making the experience feels as if you were in a real room talking with people next to you, and it is impressive.  In my experience using Skype as my primary conference call service, after 30 to 40 minutes of audio-only conversation, calls systematically drop and it is impossible to call back, or become highly unstable.  This did not happen with Voxeet.

NSA Denies Knowledge Of Heartbleed Vulnerability

NSA Denies Knowledge Of Heartbleed VulnerabilityThe NSA is an organization that has its fair share of detractors, where we did mention how the NSA was aware of the Heartbleed vulnerability for years at the end of last week. It seems as though the US National Security Agency (NSA) has stepped forward to deny any knowledge of the Heartbleed online security flaw since, touting that they do not know and were not aware of the flaw in OpenSSL which could be exploited to harvest data.

Just a side note here for the uninitiated – OpenSSL happens to be an online-data scrambling software that is used to protect sensitive data, with passwords being one of them. It was in 2013 that NSA leaker Edward Snowden claimed the NSA themselves introduced vulnerabilities to security software on purpose, which has led to such speculation that has since been denied by the NSA.

In fact, Robin Seggelman, a German computer programmer, has already stepped forward to accept responsibility for the Heartbleed bug’s existence, saying, “It’s tempting to assume that, after the disclosure of the spying activities of the NSA and other agencies, but in this case it was a simple programming error in a new feature, which unfortunately occurred in a security-relevant area. It was not intended at all, especially since I have previously fixed OpenSSL bugs myself, and was trying to contribute to the project.”

Well, there you have it – Heartbleed stemmed from Seggelman’s effort in making amends to the OpenSSL cryptographic library at the end of 2011.

Intel Education Rugged Tablet Targets Students

Intel Education Rugged Tablet Targets StudentsNo company worth its salt would want to remain where it is and let the rest of the world move on. No sir, they would want to remain at the cutting edge of innovation all the time, and Intel is no different, having updated its range of education-oriented tablet and notebook reference designs by rolling out its maiden 2-in-1 device. Known as the Intel Education 2-in-1, this does seem to resemble more of the Classmate PC convertible netbooks of yore, but you would presumably be on the receiving end of far more computing power than a netbook.
