Apple Releases Environmental Report For New Mac Pro

Apple Releases Environmental Report For New Mac ProThe Mac Pro is Apple’s latest workstation computer and while expensive, it is Apple’s latest product and naturally Apple would want to do all they can to sing its praises. In an Environmental Report that was recently released by the Cupertino company, they have highlighted not only how much more efficient the new Mac Pros are, but also how much less materials was consumed during its manufacturing process, which we’re sure will sit well with businesses and individuals who might favor a company or make a purchase decision based on such environmentally-friendly factors.

According to Apple, they found that the new Mac Pros used 68% less power in idle mode compared to previous generation Mac Pros, such as the model that was released back in 2010. Apple touts their use of power-efficient components and intelligent software as one of the reasons why the new Mac Pros have managed to achieve new levels of power-efficiency. As far as materials used are concerned, Apple claims that the new Mac Pros use 74% less aluminum than the previous generation, and that its packaging has also become more efficient.

Due to the new Mac Pro’s smaller stature, naturally a smaller box is used. If you have seen the Mac Pro’s unboxing, then you know what we are talking about. With the smaller packaging, Apple claims that it uses 82% less volume than previous packaging, which also allows up to three times more units to fit in a single airline shipping container, which ultimately reduces the number of flights needed. We’re not sure if the more environmentally-friendly Mac Pro will do much to attract new customers, but it’s still nice to see that Apple is trying.

NSA Reportedly Developing Quantum Computer That Can Break Any Encryption

NSA Reportedly Developing Quantum Computer That Can Break Any EncryptionWe expect that the NSA has high level hackers working for them, helping them gain access to a variety of secured networks, but we have also heard reports of how the NSA has allegedly paid off security companies to make their encryption less powerful, ultimately giving the NSA easier access to them.

Well it seems that the NSA might no longer have to resort to paying off security companies because according to the latest documents leaked by former NSA contractor, Edward Snowden, it seems as though the NSA has been hard at work trying to build a “cryptologically useful quantum computer” that is capable of breaking nearly every kind of encryption used by banks, businesses, and governments around the world. Mac Pro Production Could Delay In-Store Availability Until March Or April

Mac Pro Production Could Delay In Store Availability Until March Or AprilApple’s latest Mac Pros were released towards the end of December 2013, but unfortunately due to immense popularity and also because it has been speculated that Apple might have some production difficulties, the shipping times for those who placed their orders later were set for February this year. Now according to reports, not only has this delay affected customers buying the computer online, but have also affected those who planned to walk into Apple’s shops to buy the Mac Pros. Based on the reports, those planning on purchasing the Mac Pros from the shops will only be able to do some come March, or worst-case scenario, April!

This information is according to an Apple Australia business specialist who has reportedly directed customers to purchase their Mac Pros from the online website as this is one way that they will be able to secure themselves a Mac Pro in a slightly more timely manner. Given that the Mac Pros are seeing an estimated shipping date in February, we guess this is better than say March or maybe even April. It has been speculated that Apple’s new Austin, Texas production facility could be the cause of the delay of the Mac Pros, and given that it is a new facility, we guess there are some teething problems at the start, but hopefully it will all be sorted out in due time. In the meantime for customers interested in the Mac Pros, you could always try your luck at the store, or at worst place an order online and play the waiting game.

Entry-level Mac Pro’s Price Is Comparable To Other OEMs

Entry level Mac Pros Price Is Comparable To Other OEMsThe other day we reported that according to an initial comparison of the Mac Pro with a DIY equivalent, it was found that the Mac Pro was not much more expensive, and in some instances even cheaper which seemed to dispel the myth about the fabled “Apple tax”. If you still believe that the Mac Pro is more expensive and that users are essentially paying for the Apple tax, a comparison by the folks at Anandtech might be able to answer some of your questions. The folks at Anandtech recently reviewed the Mac Pro and in the process attempted to find out if one could get a Windows equivalent of the entry-level Mac Pro for cheaper, but as it turns out it looks like once again despite the Mac Pro’s hefty price tag, it seems to be in line with what other OEMs are charging (see table above).

Of course there were some factors that had to be taken into consideration, such as discounts associated with workstation orders, and also because not all OEMs offered the exact same components, prices had to be fudged a bit. However Anandtech also notes that while the price does appear to be competitive with other OEMs such as HP and Lenovo as listed above, they state that building a comparative PC from individually sourced parts would be far less expensive at least as far as lower-end systems were concerned. What do you guys make of these more comprehensive findings? Are you still convinced that as far as the Mac Pro is concerned, users are still paying a premium in “Apple tax”?

New Apple Mac Pro Is Easy To Repair

New Apple Mac Pro Is Easy To Repair

In the last week of December Apple finally started shipping the new Mac Pro, a device it first teased back in December 2012. The new Mac Pro comes with a completely different design as well as significantly improved hardware, it is certainly nothing like its predecessor. Apple products are generally hard to repair, as we’ve often found out from the folks at iFixit. They were quite surprised to see that its actually very easy to repair the new Mac Pro, with access to the internals merely a slide of the lock switch away. They also note that while many compared the machine’s design with that of a trash can, its much more similar to an aluminium beverage can.

Its easy to access the RAM modules when the outer casing is opened, and they are replaceable, meaning that users will easily be able to upgrade RAM up to 64GB without having too much trouble. They’ll need to use a single screwdriver to remove the internal SSDs, which then reveals the flash controller and the flash storage. The CPU is removable as well but users will have to dig through other components first before reaching the brains of Apple’s new Mac Pro. iFixit says that this machine is easy to disassemble, but cautions against taking it apart without a repair manual because there are some new proprietary connectors and tight cable routing which can make life a bit difficult once you’re elbow deep inside the new Mac Pro.

New Samsung ARM Chromebook With Exynos 5 Octa Processor Expected In 2014

New Samsung ARM Chromebook With Exynos 5 Octa Processor Expected In 2014

Samsung is expected to release a successor to its first ARM based Exynos 5250 Chromebook in the coming year. The new ARM Chromebook will reportedly have an Exynos 5 Octa 5420 processor based on ‘big.LITTLE” technology with four Cortex A7 1.3GHz low-power cores and four Cortex A15 1.8GHZ high-performance cores coupled with 3GB of RAM. Mali-TG28 GPU or graphics processing unit is also expected.

The new Samsung Chromebook is also rumored to have a 12 inch or less 2,560×1,600 pixel resolution display, 16GB or 32GB SSD storage and a battery capable of providing juice for seven hours. The price for this Chromebook is said to fall between $250 and $300, which would definitely make it an enticing option for customers looking to purchase an affordable notebook that runs on the heavily internet dependant Chrome OS. These notebooks have actually enjoyed much success this year, with latest data from the NPD Group revealing that 21 percent of all U.S. notebook sales in 2013 were accounted for by Chromebooks. One of the biggest reasons why they’re slowing gaining popularity is the price, which is relatively lower than conventional Windows 7 powered notebooks. Chromebooks are expected to perform better next year as well, with a new crop of notebooks expected to be unveiled next month at CES 2014. Samsung isn’t expected to unveil its latest ARM Chromebook at the show.

Chromebooks Accounted For 21% Of U.S. Notebook Sales This Year [Research]

Chromebooks Accounted For 21% Of U.S. Notebook Sales This Year [Research]

There is a lot of competition in the notebook market, competition that not only rides on the latest and greatest hardware, but also on the software. Apple’s notebooks, powered by OS X, have their own standing in the market, and so do Windows powered machines. Chromebooks are the new kids on the block, but according to the NPD Group’s research, Google’s browser based OS ended up taking a significant chunk of U.S. notebook sales in 2013.

The figures reveal as massive improvement from last year when Chromebooks only equalled to two-tenths of one percent of all computer and tablet sales in the U.S. This year, NPD Group claims, the Chromebooks accounted for 10 percent for all computer and tablet sales and 21 percent of all U.S. commercial notebook sales through November. Amazon’s list of most popular products during the holiday shopping season have two such notebooks from Acer and Samsung. According to the retailer, these Chromebooks were two of the three best selling notebooks during the holiday season in the U.S. One major reason why customers are turning to Chromebooks is the price, most models are priced around $200, much lower than an average Windows 7 powered notebook. The percentage is expected to rise in 2014, with a new crop of Chromebooks expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show 2014 in Las Vegas, next month.
