Windows 8.2 Concept Sees Modern UI On The Desktop

Windows 8.2 Concept Sees Modern UI On The DesktopEarlier in the week, we did report that Windows 8 Threshold might see the return of the proper Start menu experience, but that remains a rumor even until now. Of course, until something official comes out, we are stuck with the pseudo-Start button in Windows 8.1, but this has not stopped other more enterprising and imaginative folks from working on what could possibly be down the road. 20 year old designer Jay Machalani has thought up of what Windows 8.2 could look like, where it comes with the well loved Start menu, not to mention a seeming success in the integration of both Desktop and Start screen interfaces.

Machalani, a self-proclaimed “UX/UI & Branding Architect”, has spent a few months working on a future Windows design, touting that he loves Windows 8 personally, thinking that it is “the best OS for productivity and awesomeness” despite being “filled with massive flaws.” The conceptual Windows 8.2 interface comes with a Modern look and feel, where Machalani shared, “You can make it bigger or smaller, pin your apps and live tiles, resize them, get a quick access to the Classic apps Jumplist (loved that feature from Windows 7), access the notification center, settings, power options and search. It makes sense.” Do you hope that Microsoft would go in this direction?

    Microsoft BUILD 2014 Confirmed

Microsoft BUILD 2014 ConfirmedAnother year is about to come to an end, and this would more often than not also mean that companies all over the world have more or less made plans for various road shows and conferences to happen in the year ahead. Software giant Microsoft is not exempt either, and they are currently working on delivering Microsoft BUILD 2014, hoping that in this event, developers will be able to “go deep” into Windows. The 2013 edition of Microsoft BUILD was held in June earlier this year over at San Francisco, and apparently the location has proved to have its fair share of pros that Microsoft decided to hold the 2014 BUILD conference there again.

We do know that Microsoft BUILD 2014 will happen from April 2nd to April 4th, 2014, where the venue will be the same as that of 2013’s – that is, at the Moscone Center which is located in downtown San Francisco and is a place that has seen its fair share of historic Apple announcements, too. Registration for Microsoft BUILD 2014 is set to kick off on January 14th at noon Eastern time (9 am Pacific), giving you more than enough time to figure out whether you would be able to attend it or not. Incapsula: Bots Make Up 61.5% Of Internet Traffic

Incapsula: Bots Make Up 61.5% Of Internet TrafficHere is a rather interesting statistic, at least according to a new study by Incapsula – that 61.5% of all Internet traffic happens to be generated by bots. Just in case you were wondering, Incapsula happens to be a company that offers up cloud-based services to web sites. 61.5% is definitely a staggering number, but it did not happen just that way overnight. In fact, Incapsula claims that the figure had already hit 51% in March last year, which is already more than half of all Internet traffic.

Just what kind of metrics as well as situation was used to arrive at such a result? Well, Incapsula monitored 20,000 on their network over a period of one and a half months. Search sites remain extremely popular, with the likes of Google and Bing alongside other “good” bots generating 31% of all web traffic. As for the remaining 30.5%, those happen to fall under what they deem as the ‘malicious’ bot category, where among them will include “scrappers” which are involved in content and email address theft, hacker bots that intend to distribute malware while taking over websites, as well as DoS (Denial of Service) attacks by other bots to further reduce a site’s available bandwidth. Come on you humans, it is time to buck up and drive Internet traffic!

Pandemics — the spread of disease through large populations rapidly — is something that has affected our world at various points for as long as humans have been around, and something that remains an ever-present threat despite increases in medical sciences and research. Homeless Man With Chromebook Completes First Mobile App

Homeless Man With Chromebook Completes First Mobile AppNormally, a homeless person would have life a whole lot tougher than someone with a job and can get three square meals a day, without having to worry about whether he or she has no place to rest his or her head on a comfortable pillow at night. Well, this homeless man is not going to let his situation get him down, as he learned just how to code on his Google Chromebook in a matter of 16 weeks, and has successfully released his first mobile application that is known as “Trees for Cars”.

Leo Grand actually invested several hours daily to code the carpooling application on his refurbished Chromebook all the while he was living on the streets. This particular app will play nice on both the Android and iOS platforms, where the main intention of it would be to help ensure the environment is well kept for the future generation by hooking up drivers who are more than willing to share their ride with others to a similar destination. In “Trees for Cars”, the driver will select the rendezvous point of his own convenience, where the app will suggest nearby passengers. Of course, it requires an agreement from both parties to the invitation before they are connected to each other. Right now, this app is available for $0.99 a pop, and Grand hopes to make enough money to help see him make a career in programming and app development.

Firefox Start Screen For Windows 8 Version Spotted

Firefox Start Screen For Windows 8 Version SpottedThe good people over at Mozilla are currently working on the latest version of the Metro/Modern user interface port, and right now, it seems to be on track for a release later in January next year. As of now, however, the online meeting notes for the Mozilla team members do show a rather interesting screenshot – that of a new start screen user interface for Firefox for Windows 8. This mockup start screen that you see above will be able to deliver helpful hints for those who might be a wee bit confused by the new options that are made available.

For instance, the screen itself will show off any bookmarks which might be set up, in addition to the sites which are visited the most by one particular Firefox user, as well as how one is able to access tabs simply be right-clicking or by pulling them down with a finger, assuming one is running it on a touchscreen enabled device. Apart from that, the user interface team for Firefox is tipped to work on the “Windows 8 First Run experience” beginning sometime next week, which is good news. After all, starting sooner is always a whole lot better than later, right? [Press Release]

YouTube Shares Some Impactful Videos For The Year

Can you believe it? We are about to kiss goodbye to 2013, and 2014 will soon be upon us like a flurry. Well, at the end of each year, most folks are rather reflective in nature, thinking about what has gone past, and there is also a renewed sense of hope for things to change for the better in the year ahead. YouTube has decided to do their bit with their annual list of some of the more memorable videos throughout the year, and considering how 80% of all views on YouTube hail from outside the US, it just goes to show how involved the global community is when it comes to driving pop culture.

The Fox has been watched more than 275 million times, which makes it the highest trending video for the year. Apart from that, record-setting numbers were hit when it came to PSY’s post-”Gangnam Style” performance. 1.7 million plus of DIY “Harlem Shake” videos were uploaded, numbering more than the souls living in Manhattan. As part of the celebration of the aforementioned moments, over 60 top creators on YouTube decided to collaborate on a video for everyone which you can enjoy above. It is stuff like this from YouTube that we love, not violation warnings served to gaming channels. [Press Release]
