Google Could Port Chrome Apps To Android And iOS

Google Could Port Chrome Apps To Android And iOSIt seems that the good people over at Google are currently working to deliver Chrome packaged apps from the desktop all the way to the Android and iOS platforms. This would be made possible thanks to the development of a toolkit which will enable developers to work on Chrome apps for Android and iOS, in addition to porting current Chrome apps over to two of the hugely popular mobile platforms worldwide. Over at a GitHub repository that has been known as the Mobile Chrome Apps, the documentation within did show that Chrome Packaged App for Windows, OS X, Linux, and Chrome OS happen to be but the start, and there is a whole lot more to come in due time.

This toolkit will basically assist developers to work on Android and iOS hybrid native apps using Chrome app polyfills, all via Apache Cordova. Among the steps that are involved would include making modifications for mobile design purposes, the ability to fix bugs, work around some of the limitations, and testing, too – which happens to be an indispensable part of the journey. Google claims that when properly done, the apps will be able to be made available on Google Play and Apple’s App Store. What do you think of this particular move?

Facebook Will Offer “Unfollow” Option Soon

Facebook Will Offer “Unfollow” Option SoonSome of us prefer to keep our private lives, well, private. This means being extra careful when it comes to accepting who are your friends on a social network. Facebook, being one of the most popular social networks around globally, is said to soon offer its users the ability to “unfollow” friends. This option would mean you will be able to remove comments and updates from friends on your list whom you do not want to see on your News Feed. This would certainly go some way in making your News Feed more relevant.

This new Unfollow button, first outed to the masses by TechCrunch, will function in a similar manner so that users can “hide all” from friends in the past. It would edge one closer to the line of defriending, but stop at just blocking content that one does not want to see from their friends. According to a Facebook spokesperson who mentioned it to Mashable, “The goal of this change is to help people curate their News Feed and see more of the content that they care about.” If you happen to be on the receiving end of being unfollowed, fret not – you will not know about it, so your ego would not end up bruised in any way. Except until, perhaps when you meet up with said friend in person and start wondering why he or she has not said anything about your recent Facebook updates.

Spotify Has Paid Out $1 Billion In Royalties Since Launch

Spotify Has Paid Out $1 Billion In Royalties Since LaunchHave you heard about Spotify before? Well, approximately two and a half years ago, Spotify has landed on the US with much fanfare, and here we are with additional news about this unique service. In fact, Spotify has announced that they have already paid out over $1 billion in royalties ever since it was launched, and its most recent efforts in engaging even more people would be the introduction of a website which intends to explain just how does it work so that other artists and music professionals will be able to get a better idea.

This new website has the intention to make sure that its business model ends up as more transparent, which is a surefire way to win some brownie points among the masses. As for the issuing of $1 billion in royalties since its inception in 2009, that is certainly a mind blowing figure. After all, at the corresponding point of time in 2012, Spotify only had a total royalty payout of $500 million, which meant that in this year alone, Spotify has already forked out $500 million in royalties, now how about that? Do you think that Spotify is here to stay for the long term, or will it eventually be overtaken by something newer and better?

NORAD Tracks Santa Again This Year

NORAD Tracks Santa Again This YearWe have brought you word about NORAD’s Santa Claus tracker a few years back, and this time around, this software is back yet again – although this time around, it has made the official jump over to the world of tablets. In fact, NORAD (North American Aerospace Defense Command) as a defense agency has decided to work with Microsoft on an updated web-based tracker which will specially work best on web browsers that play nice with touchscreen displays, where among them include Internet Explorer 11, of course. This latest site would let you keep tabs on where Santa Claus is headed to, as you get to spin a globe coded with WebGL using nothing but your finger alone.

Apart from that, you will also have the ability to make a call over to NORAD using Skype so that you will be able to gain additional information on the most recent sighting of Santa and his sleigh (not to mention his merry bunch of reindeer, too). Apart from that, there is no need to play the patience card since Microsoft has already promised that you will be treated to games, movies and music on a daily basis using this particular NORAD Santa Tracker. Windows 8 and Windows Phone users are also able to check it out via their respective native tracking apps.

    Google Compute Engine Service Launched

Google’s cloud-based Compute Engine service has just been launched after this virtual-machine service has completed its beta testing, which is definitely good news to those who are interested in the service. With its launch, it would result in lower prices and new features for the masses. In fact, the Compute Engine service will be part of the Google Cloud Platform, where it will go up against rivals such as Windows Azure and Amazon EC2. Part of this service will include the ability to access virtual machines which can then be scaled accordingly, depending on the application at that point in time.

Compute Engine has been specially designed in order to integrate with the other Cloud Platform products, where among them include storage and database services, App Engine web-app hosting, and App Services. Not only that, Google will also throw in a sweetener after announcing a drop in the price of Persistent Disk storage by a whopping 60% per gigabyte, while the I/O fees would also see a price drop along the way. In addition, this particular service would also receive an update that will see the introduction of more capabilities, where these will be made available for new or existing customers immediately so that developers have the luxury of running virtually all out-of-the-box Linux distributions and any kernels or software. [Press Release]

OS X Mavericks’ Overall Market Share Continues To Grow

OS X Mavericks Overall Market Share Continues To GrowIt is no secret that when it comes to operating systems for computers, Microsoft’s Windows platform is clearly the dominant software, leaving alternatives such as Linux, Unix, and Apple’s OS X platform to fight for whatever’s left. According to metrics company, Net Applications, it seems that while OS X Mavericks’ overall market share is still pretty low, at least compared to Windows, it has been climbing albeit slowly. Net Applications has found that in the month of November, OS X Mavericks managed to account for 2.42% of the overall desktop operating system market share.

This is a gain of 1.58 points during the month of November, a leap from its market share of 0.8% back in October. If there’s one main reason why OS X Mavericks is being widely adopted and that it is still growing, it could be because unlike previous upgrades, Apple has decided to make upgrading to OS X Mavericks (and future OS updates) free. Usually customers would either have to buy a new Mac computer to get the latest operating system, or pay a small fee like $20 to upgrade. In fact by going free, OS X Mavericks managed to nab 6-8% of the OS X market share in the first 24 hours of its release.

VLC For Windows 8′s Metro Close To Being Released

VLC For Windows 8s Metro Close To Being ReleasedGood news Windows 8 users, if you were looking forward to the Window 8 Metro version of the media player, you’re in luck because it seems that the app is close to being released. According to the team at VLC who posted on their Kickstarter page, the app had been submitted to the Windows Store, but apparently due to an audio crash, they failed to receive certification. While they’re working on getting it fixed and resubmitting it, this is good news because it signifies that the app is pretty much ready to go, save for some bugs here and there.

The app will perform like the regular VLC and will support the usual formats, including file and network streaming support, and even subtitles. The team is hoping to resubmit the app for certification this weekend, so if all goes well, it shouldn’t be too long before we see its release. As for the ARM version of the app, including Windows Phone, the team is still working on it and they are hoping that they will be able to deploy it in a matter of weeks, stating that the main reasons behind the delay is due to compiler related issues.

It was back in 2012 when VLC first announced their plans to make a Windows 8 Metro version of their app. The team then launched a successful Kickstarter campaign and have been slowly making some progress over the course of the year. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for a release and will update you guys once we learn more.
