Intel has revealed that its Broadwell chip has been delayed a solid quarter, moving its launch to Q1 of next year. The information was given during the company’s financial call today, with Intel CEO Brian Krzanich saying the delay is due to a “defect density issue.” The problem has resulted in lower numbers of usable […]
Nintendo has had quite the rocky start for its Wii U, although its Nintendo 3DS handheld is certainly at its prime now that Pokemon X and Pokemon Y have been released. Nintendo has always been a pioneer in its first-party published games as they have such iconic characters as Mario, Link and Pikachu, which is why it isn’t completely surprising to learn the Windows 8 app store is currently littered with complete rip-offs of Nintendo’s games. Touchscreen computers are certainly starting to take off as we’ve seen a number of laptops as well as standalone monitors that Windows 8 users can use in order to reach out and touch their apps. Chrome OS users have gone without being able to make full use of their computers which have a touchscreen, but today, Google has released a new stable build of its computer operating system that adds some much needed support.

Today is Ada Lovelace Day, and it’s an opportunity to raise the awareness of the contribution that extraordinary women have brought to science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Ada Lovelace is an English female Mathematician that is usually credited for coming up with the first algorithm that was to be processed by a mechanical computer called the Analytical Engine. Because of that, she has been widely seen as the first “computer programmer”.
The Anita Borg Institute and Symantec came up with this interesting info graphic that shows key accomplishments from brilliant women over the decades. I knew some of them as they are related to computer science, but for example, I had never heard of Stephanie Kwolek who came up with Kevlar, a material that is typically associated with “tough” activities such as car racing and the military. Computer Glitch Results In Welfare Benefits Frenzy At Certain Walmart Stores
Posted in: Today's ChiliWhile Black Friday is not quite just around the corner at this point in time, it has arrived earlier than normal, so to speak, as computer glitches has resulted in a welfare benefits frenzy over at some Walmart stores. After all, this has led to customers emptying store shelves as though it was Black Friday, while at other stores, nobody were able to make a purchase at all, no thanks to glitches with the nation’s welfare system. I do wonder whether the government shutdown had something to do with this.
There were issues that involved Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards, as government payments to the poor which were administered by states using the assistance of private companies, affected 17 states at the minimum on Saturday and Sunday, resulting in retail riots. Louisiana stores in Springhill and Mansfield saw cards registered without any spending limits, which resulted in some recipients to go on a buying binge.
Employees who worked at such stores were obviously rattled, as they could not do much about the situation other than to honor those EBT cards. According to Walmart spokeswoman Kayla Whaling, “We did make the decision to continue to accept EBT cards (and purchases on WIC and SNAP) during the outage so that they could get food for their families.” However, as the computer glitch was fixed and the cards could be read properly again, it was clear that several customers took advantage of the taxpayer-funded program, as there was an instance of a lady who picked up $700 worth of merchandise in her cart using an EBT card that had a balance of just $0.49

D-Link, a company that specializes in networking products, has issued a promise that they would close its routers’ back doors before October is over. This particular promise came about after responding to the discovery that a fair number of its consumer-grade devices did come with a string which would have enabled unauthenticated access to its admin Web page. There was an instance where a researcher over at /DEV/TTYS0 unpacked the firmware of a number of D-Link devices, discovering that should a browser present with the right user agent string to the internal administrative Web server, it would then be on the receiving end of unauthenticated as well as unfettered access to the device’s administration panel.
Hence, when that happens, it is but a simple matter of snooping around on users’ communications. D-Link has already mentioned that they are currently working on a fix, and those who are keeping a keen eye out on the situation will be able to download the firmware here. Apart from that, D-Link also advised as follows, “As there are different hardware revisions on our products, please check this on your device before downloading the correct corresponding firmware update. The hardware revision information can usually be found on the product label on the underside of the product next to the serial number. Alternatively, they can also be found on the device web configuration.”
As the end user, one can always do one’s part by making sure that a strong Wi-Fi password is always ingrained, not to mention disabling remote administrative access.

Repo Robot Takes A Ride With You
Posted in: Today's ChiliRachael Ward is suing a loan company for repeatedly freezing the ignition on her 2003 Mitsubshi Galant with a remote device. Companies that give high-interest loans to people who don’t qualify for regular car loans are installing devices that prevent cars from starting and can be activated remotely when payments are missed. Critics say the devices are dangerous, leaving people stranded far from home or in dangerous areas. J
Ah, how has technology changed the way we work? Let me count the ways. In the good old days, if you could not meet your car payment, other than receiving notices in your letter box from the bank, you also had to keep a keen eye out for the repo man. The thing is, the repo man is no longer flesh and bone these days, but rather, he comes in the form of a small device that is located under your dashboard. Whenever you miss a payment, the robot will get into action by immobilizing your ride, turning your car into a giant paperweight that sits on your driveway.
Of course, you as an owner will have the choice of paying up your monthly loan in order to use the car again, or simply to wait until the human version of the repo man show his face as he will have his co-ordinates locked onto your car thanks to the wonders of GPS navigation.
