Microsoft Highlights Start Button Return In First Windows 8.1 Ad

It was first discovered last year that Microsoft was going to remove the traditional Start button in Windows 8, Windows 8 Consumer Preview version which was released back in 2012 did not come with the aforementioned button. It wouldn’t be an understatement to say that the Start button and menu were iconic, they have been around in every single Windows version ever since they debuted with Windows 95 some 15 years ago. After hearing feedback from customers, Microsoft decided earlier this year to bring back the Start button in Windows 8.1. The first ad for the upcoming Windows update highlights the Start button’s return.

The ad also sheds light on Windows 8.1′s ability to boot to desktop. From there, users can click on the Start button to flip back and forth between the desktop and the Metro Start Screen. However, the Start menu has been taken away. The Start button is now a permanent addition to Windows 8.1, users don’t have the ability to switch it off. Microsoft is going to release Windows 8.1 to the public on October 18th. It has already detailed the pricing and packages for the latest Windows update. So while the experience might not entirely be the same, those who didn’t like it when the Start button was taken away now have an added incentive to upgrade to Windows 8.1 when it comes out.

    Google Hummingbird Algorithm Update Announced

Google Hummingbird Algorithm Update AnnouncedGoogle has, from time to time, changed their algorithms in an attempt to bring us what they claim to be better results in the end. Well, the Panda update in the past did not sit too well with some website owners, and this time around, there is the new “Hummingbird” update which was announced by Google at a Menlo Park garage which Google was first incubated in its early years. Google has decided to remain mum on the kind of technology that ran the algorithm, but it did mention that Hummingbird “makes results more useful and relevant, especially when you ask Google long, complex questions.”

Google claims that humans have begun to use ever more sophisticated, conversational queries, while making the move away from short directed terms. After all, folks these days tend to be more likely to write complex and perhaps some might even say long winded stories, and these are very difficult to parse for the search engine. Hence, the shift to a more conversational tone is required to be part of the search engine’s repertoire. According to a Google spokesperson, “Hummingbird pays more attention to each word in the query, ensuring the whole query is taken into account – so if a resulting page is a bit less strong in general, but it’s the most relevant to your search terms, that’s the result you’ll get. And if there are plenty of relevant matches to your search terms, Hummingbird does a better job picking the strongest page for you.”

I am awaiting the backlash from some websites that have been configured SEO-wise to make the most out of Panda. Will we see sudden drops in PageRank for some?

FAA Advisory Panel Approves The Use Of Personal Electronics On Planes

Earlier this summer, it was reported the FAA was planning to relax the personal electronics restrictions they had put into place for several years now, making it nearly impossible to listen to a portable music player or reading an ebook during takeoff or landing. It looks like the ball is starting to roll as the FAA advisory committee has just recommended that airline passengers should be allowed to use “smartphones, tablets, e-readers and other personal electronic devices” during takeoffs and landings.
