Intel Prototype Processor Runs On Wine

Intel Prototype Processor Runs On WineA wine-powered processor? That certainly sounds rather out of whack if you ask us, but then again, stranger things have happened in the past. Intel has done pretty well for itself in the microprocessor industry to say the least over the years, but this time around, they figure out that they can take yet another step forward. For starters, Intel has shown off a particular prototype of a processor which happens to be so energy efficient, it is capable of being powered by a single glass of wine, now how about that?

This is made possible thanks to the acetic acid in the red wine itself which in turn, will be able to produce a fair amount of energy required to power the processor. Sounds like a familiar process to those who are huge fans of science? That is because this is pretty much the same method used to power other devices such as a light bulb using potatoes as batteries. Needless to say, a wine-powered laptop is going to be far from affordable considering the amount of wine you would need, but at least it is an impressive tech demonstration that gives us something to mull over. Interesting times are ahead of us, no?

Dell To Launch $349 Windows 8.1 Touchscreen Laptop

Dell To Launch $349 Windows 8.1 Touchscreen LaptopIt wasn’t too long ago that ASUS took the wraps off the T100, which for those unfamiliar is a laptop running Windows 8.1 that comes with a detachable display that can double up as a tablet of sorts. The device was priced at a very affordable $349 for the base model, and it seems that Dell has decided to join in the race as well. Dell has recently announced that they will be releasing a similar product that will be part of the company’s Inspiron lineup of computers, and that it will sport an 11” touchscreen display that can be detached as well.

Dell plans to match the T100’s price and said device is expected to cost $349 and will be powered by AMD’s processors. The Intel model is expected to retail for more at $379. According to Dell, this upcoming model will be able to last an impressive 8 hours on a single battery charge and will come bundled with a free version of Microsoft Office, making this a pretty decent deal. The full specifications remain unknown but presumably more will be revealed as the launch of the device nears.

Windows 8.1 Price And Packaging Detailed

Windows 8.1 Price And Packaging Detailed

Today, Microsoft has detailed Windows 8.1 price and packaging through an official blog post. Consumers who’re already using a device with a legitimate copy of Windows 8 will receive Windows 8.1 update free of charge through the Windows Store on October 18th. Those who want to upgrade from an older Windows version will have to buy this update. Windows 8.1 can either be bought through a retailer as a packaged DVD product or it can be purchased as a download from Windows.com. Pricing will vary by market, but in the U.S., Windows 8.1 will cost $119.99 and Windows 8.1 Pro $199.99. Pricing and editions for this update are similar to that for Windows 8.

Customers who purchase a device later this year that comes with Windows 8.1 pre-installed will be able to upgrade to Windows 8.1 Pro for $99.99, the add-on will not only unlock Pro features, it will also bring Windows Media Center. Customers with devices that have Windows 8.1 Pro pre-installed can purchase Windows Media Center for $9.99. Customers who upgrade from Windows 7 will be able to retain all their files, though they will be required to reinstall desktop apps, even Microsoft Office. Microsoft says that Windows 8.1 is not designed for installation on devices that run Windows XP or Vista, but if customers want to upgrade those devices, they should buy a retail packaged DVD and boot from the disc to do a clean install. Files, settings and programs will not be transferred to the Windows 8.1 installation in this case. Microsoft releases Windows 8.1 to the public on October 18th.

Skype Could Have Been Known As Skyper

Skype Could Have Been Known As SkyperDo you like stories about the origin of something? I clearly remember how Zuckerberg’s social network could have been known as The Facebook, now that would have been pretty sad in this day and age considering how everyone else is so used to just plain old Facebook, right? Well, it has just been revealed that Skype, the VoIP messaging system that we have all come to know and love, could have taken a slight deviation in its naming convention earlier. Skype co-founder Niklas Zennström claimed that while he was developing the app in Estonia, the first name that the group came up with was, wait for it, Skyper.

Zennström said, “The original name had an ‘r’at the end, which came from peer-to-peer in the Sky.” It seemed that registering Skyper as a domain name proved to be an issue, so they purchased the rights to Skyper.net instead. As Skyper inched closer to its launch date of August 29, 2003, they decided to drop the .net in the domain name, which was why they did away with the ‘r’ and Skype was born officially, alongside the Skype.com domain name. Another example of all’s well that ends well, no? Do you think that Skyper would have affected the eventual success of Skype that we all know today?

    Microsoft Unveils New Bing Logo

Microsoft Unveils New Bing LogoMicrosoft continues the good fight where search engines are concerned, and it does not seem as though they are going to be able to overtake the king of the hill at the moment (and has been that way for quite some time already), Google. Still, this does not mean that Microsoft is just going to sit back and not do anything. No sir, apart from introducing new changes that will hopefully bridge the gap with the market leader, Microsoft has also decided to freshen things up a bit by introducing a new logo.

Other than the external cosmetic changes, however, would lie the more important search algorithm as well as the ability to perform searches in a far more efficient manner. For starters, there are improved “Snapshot” cards which will hopefully be able to fill in what you want to know about a particular person, destination, or item before a single search result is clicked. It is somewhat similar to Google’s cards, where it features a quick index of information. Not only that, “Page Zero” results also has auto-fill that will work as you search a query. All in all, do you like what Microsoft has done with its new Bing logo? [Press Release]

Iran Lifts Block On Twitter, Facebook

Iran Lifts Block On Twitter, FacebookDid you see any pigs fly recently? The reason for me asking that is, Iran’s new moderate leadership does seem to be moving in the right direction by embracing the social media revolution as the government has lifted the block on both Twitter as well as Facebook. It must be noted that the block on both social media services was imposed four years ago after a post-election uprising, followed by crackdown in 2009. Ever since Hassan Rouhani took office in August this year, this reform-centric cleric decided to tweet on his own official Twitter account, and he was not alone as the country’s foreign minister also participated.

So far, Rouhani has used social media to share his two cents on the crisis in Syria, while congratulating Iranian athletes as well as bid holiday greetings to the global Jewish community on Rosh Hashanan. Strangely enough, Rouhani did not say anything on Monday night, and neither did he tweet an official announcement where unblocking of the social media outlets are concerned. It is nice to see the country opening up ever so slightly, and any progress is more than welcome. We do wonder what other kinds of progressive moves are in store for the near future.

YouTube Allows Users To Beam Videos To Chromecast Devices

YouTube Allows Users To Beam Videos To Chromecast DevicesIt seems that the floodgates have been opened by YouTube, as the video hosting site has begun to allow users to beam videos to their Chromecast devices regardless of which website that they are on at that particular point in time. The addition of Chromecast support was embedded to its web player on the quiet, enabling users of Google’s TV dongle to “send” videos that are shown on third-party websites directly from their browser to their TV.

In the past, casting was only supported from YouTube.com, so this is definitely a step in the right direction. Several Chromecast users did start to report that recently, they managed to see the dongle’s play to TV button popping up on embedded videos on Google+, in addition to other sites. A YouTube spokesperson said this, “With more videos coming to YouTube every minute we’re always experimenting with ways to help people more easily find, watch and share the videos that matter most to them. As always, we’ll consider rolling changes out more broadly based on feedback on these experiments.” This is one move that makes plenty of sense for YouTube, as it could allow folks to view videos for longer periods of time, and in turn, YouTube will be able to show more ads, now how about that for a win-win situation?
