HTC working on an Android netbook for T-Mobile?

Man, the Android netbook hype is just getting silly as we draw nearer to Computex: the whispers today are that HTC and T-Mobile are working on a 3G-capable machine running Google’s OS. That vague bit of info is all we have at the moment, but it’s not totally insane — HTC and T-Mobile are bosom buddies in the Android game, after all. We’ll keep an ear to the ground.

MSI readying 14-inch X-Slim X400 laptop

Ruh roh — looks like MSI‘s about to pull an ASUS. While the introduction of a few good X-Slim laptops is find and dandy, we’re already starting to lose count of ’em. Aside from the X320, X340 and X600, the outfit is apparently readying a 14-inch variant that will be tagged X400. The news was outed at a company event over in Japan this weekend, and while details outside of the diagonal screen size were short, we can probably expect it to hum along on a CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) chipset and be just as sexy as its more diminutive counterparts. If we were betting folks, we’d probably expect an official specifications sheet to hit just in time for Computex. Right, MSI?

Averatec hints at an Android netbook

We’re not sure why Android is suddenly the hottest netbook OS in town, but we’d guess it’s about to hit the scene in a big way at Computex next month. Today’s whispers? Averatec CEO Tae-Hyun Cho says his company will ship a new netbook with a “surprise” OS that blends “cell phone and PC technology” in August or September. Very mysterious. That’s literally all we know for now, but Cho’s comments about what consumers are willing to pay has us thinking this one’ll come in cheap — we’ll keep an eye out.

NVIDIA: 40 Atom-based ION platforms by end of 2009

After being let down by the Atom 230 processor in our review of the Ion-based AspireRevo, we’re comforted by NVIDIA’s promise of more Atom / Ion configurations on the horizon. Forty of ’em by the end of the year including some based on the beefier dual-core Atom 330 processor just like this ASUS reference design that NVIDIA was showing off earlier today. Of course, the Computex show in Taipei (kicking off June 2nd) would be the obvious venue for such a full scale assault against Intel’s GMA lethargy. Fortunately, Engadget Chinese will be on point to witness the carnage.

First Ion-based netbooks reportedly on track for June debut

Nothing is completely official just yet, but Pocket-lint is reporting that its inside source at NVIDIA has “confirmed” that the initial batch of Ion-based netbooks will be announced at the big Computex trade show at the beginning of June, and that the first few netbooks could start shipping “as early as July.” Of course, there’s no word on any specific companies involved just yet, with the source only going so far as to say that the announcements will come from some “key players.” Acer would seem to be about as close to a sure thing as there is, however, considering that it just recently launched the first Ion-based nettop, the AspireRevo, and that it’s never passed up an opportunity to roll out yet another new nettbook in the past.

dmedia renames G400 MID, hopes to showcase M0 at Computex

While dmedia has definitely shown signs of life here lately, we’ve been decidedly left in the lurch with regard to its elusive MID. Initially spotted last November as the WiMAX-packin’ G400, said unit skipped out on promised booth appearances at both CES and Mobile World Congress 2009. Being that we’re the forgiving bunch, we’re still maintaining some level of hope that the recently renamed M0 will indeed make itself seen at Computex this June. Outside of the identity swap, most everything else looks the same; specifications include a 4.3-inch touchscreen (800 x 480 resolution), a 5 megapixel webcam, a Fujitsu-sourced WiMAX module, built-in GPS module and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR. Details beyond that are few and far betwixt, but hopefully we’ll know more as warmer months approach.
