Functional LEGO Keyboard: Work & Play

We’ve seen a model of an antique typewriter made out of LEGO. But this LEGO keyboard made by Jason Allemann actually works and is good enough for daily use. With the exception of the electronics and key membrane – both of which Jason took from a discarded keyboard – the entire device is made out of LEGO.

The base of the keyboard is pretty standard stuff. Jason’s genius shows in the key switches, which he made out of Technic axles and connectors.

It may not be news to LEGO fans, but I didn’t know that LEGO makes pieces that are printed with numbers and letters. However, the world’s most famous toy company hasn’t released pieces printed with other keyboard symbols, so Jason had to improvise. His ersatz caps lock key is my favorite. Of course, Jason can easily swap the keyboard’s pieces. Get to work on that Print Screen piece LEGO.

Jason should put together a DIY kit for the keyboard. I’d buy one. Piece a browser together and head to Jason’s website for more on his awesome mod.

CruxEncore Case Turns iPad Air into a Notebook

There are bunches of cases out there for the iPad that add a physical keyboard to make it more efficient to use when typing a lot. A new case has turned up on Kickstarter that turns the iPad Air into a laptop.

The CruxEncore case is designed to leave the camera and all controls of the tablet open and accessible. The case also leaves the speakers uncovered so the sound for videos and movies isn’t blocked. It’s got a durable hinge mechanism which allows you to adjust the iPad Air to any angle, without worrying about the display flopping over on itself.

It’s made from sturdy aircraft grade 6063 aluminum and polycarbonate. The aluminum is then anodized in multiple colors including silver, black, and white.

Power for the Bluetooth 4.0 keyboard comes from a 360 mAh battery that is good for a month of use per charge. The keys are raised and are claimed to mimic the typing feel on a MacBook. A pledge of $89(USD) or more will get you one of the cases with shipping estimated in May 2014.

We’ve featured a couple of PC casemods that incorporated a computer’s hardware into a desk. If Lian-Li pushes through with its prototype, you won’t need to be a modder to have a desk and PC case in one.
