Engadget’s recession antidote: daily giveaways!

You know, we were going to write about how NEC is cutting 20,000 jobs, and Hitachi’s plan to possibly slash 7,000 workers — but this stuff is getting kind of depressing. After a meeting of the minds between our crack team of editors, we’ve decided there’s a better way to handle this recession: giveaways. Starting today, we’re going to be giving away one item a day for as long as we can (until we run out / the companies stop giving us stuff). That means that at least for the foreseeable future, you can expect a teensy sliver of economic relief in these trying times. We’re going to start out with some games — Skate 2 and The Lord of the Rings: Conquest for the Xbox 360. Check the rules below, and get to winning!

The rules:

  • Leave a comment below. Any comment will do, but if you want to share a tale of heart wrenching economic strife, that’s good too.
  • You may only enter this specific giveaway once. If you enter this giveaway more than once you’ll be automatically disqualified, etc. (Yes, we have robots that thoroughly check to ensure fairness.)
  • If you enter more than once, only activate one comment. This is pretty self explanatory. Just be careful and you’ll be fine.
  • Contest is open to anyone in the 50 States, 18 or older! Sorry, we don’t make this rule (we hate excluding anyone), so be mad at our lawyers and contest laws if you have to be mad.
  • Winner will be chosen randomly. The winner will receive two Xbox 360 games. Approximate value is $120.
  • Entries can be submitted until Monday, February 2nd, 11:59PM ET. Good luck!
  • Full rules can be found here.

Get-With-the-Programmer.jpg

Tech geeks don’t always get the love they deserve. I mean, when was the last time People picked a programmer for the cover of its annual Sexiest Man Alive issue?

Thanks to Daily Candy, things are about to change. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, the site has launched a Get With the Programmer contest. The objective? To find the “hottest tech dude in all the land.”

Ahem:

We’re accepting nominations for the Don Juan of the Database. Do you know a worthy Gigabyte Gigolo? To nominate your resident RAMcake, just fill out our quick, easy form telling us why he should win. On February 4, we’ll announce the finalists on our website and invite you readers to vote.

The prize? Eternal glory and an HP Mini 1000 XP edition series netbook with an upgraded 60 GB hard drive for both the winner and the person who nominates him. Programmers, IT guys, and, er, RAMcakes, get ready for your close-up.

Reminder: win a bag of CES swag!

Look, we fully understand how easy it is to forget all about last week after a hard fought weekend, so we’re just letting you know that there’s around 24 hours left to cast your name into the hat. What hat, you ask? The hat from which three winners will be chosen to take home a single bag* of CES miscellany and paraphernalia. Head on over and leave a comment!

*Pictured bag is not to scale, nor is it representative of what the winning bag will actually look like.

Already whittled down from over 100 submissions, only 10 finalists remain to win the honor of CES’s annual competition, Last Gadget Standing. Past winners include such notable products as the Roomba, the Eye-Fi Card, and OnStar, making this one serious contest.

The 10 finalists were chosen by expert judges, including tech expert and Last Gadget Standing Moderator Robin Raskin, and eight editors from NetShelter Technology Media network partner sites, namely Geek.com, Slashgear.com, MobileBurn.com, PhoneArena.com, FixYa.com, I4U.com, TechEBlog.com, and TGDaily.com. Each contestant will get 4 minutes on Saturday, January 10, to demo their gadgets live in front of a crowd–and then the winner will be chosen from audience response.

Win a Big Box of Awesome from BenSpark!

Ambient Fire DVDNo, no, it’s not a box with me in it.

Fellow photog and all-around cool guy Drew has decided to clean out his collection of fun stuff by giving it away to one lucky winner! Here’s a snippet from the supplier of awesome himself:

This is a box of mysterious stuff that I collected, amassed, was given, begged, borrowed and stole. This is a box of Awesome that I am going to give to one lucky reader. I’ll be revealing a few of the items that are in the box in the next few days. There is a lot of stuff in the box. You can already see that there is a T-Shirt in the box. Are there more? What else is there? How can you win?

The answers to these questions can be discovered by simply entering the contest and waiting for the winner to be announced.

Go on now, why are you still here? The Big Box of Awesome awaits!
