Doodle 4 Google 2013 state winners revealed, contest opens to vote

On January 14, Google kicked off its 2013 Doodle 4 Google contest, which sought doodles from students K through 12 across the nation on the theme “My Best Day Ever.” The first stage of the contest has reached its end and Google has selected winners from each state, publishing their doodles in each age group and asking the public to vote for the one they like most.

Over 130,000 drawings were submitted, according to the announcement, all of which were sorted through for a roster of winners categorized by state and age group. The public is being asked to vote on the doodles they feel are best, with each person being able to vote once per age group for the sum of five votes total. You can see the winning doodles here.

Google informed the winners in a rather exciting way, sending an official “Googler” to each student’s school to make the announcement and join in the celebration with them. The Internet giant praised the entries, calling the imagine and creativity involved in them impressive. Among the winners, five national finalists will be selected, and then from those a final single winner will be chosen.

The contest is being offered in partnership with the American Museum of Natural History, which will hold an exhibition from May 22 to July 14 showcasing the winners from each state. The contest first started back in 2008, and had run annualy since then, with variations of the contest being offered elsewhere across the globe. Last year’s contest garnered 114,000 entries.

2013 ‘Doodle 4 Google’ top 50 winners selected, require your judgment

2013 Doodle 4 Google winners selected, require your judgment

There’s little in life finer than pitting youths against each other in battle, which Google’s annual “Doodle 4 Google” contest clearly appreciates. The competition takes thousands of Google logo doodle entries and pits them down from thousands to 50, one per US State, and organizes those entries by grade level. The images are then put online for the world to enjoy, as well as to vote on — out of the five doodles with the highest votes, one national winner is selected, which Google plans on revealing on May 22nd in New York City. This year’s theme is “Best Day Ever,” which means outdoor activities to one Maine-based middle schooler (seen above), and hanging out with bees to a Michigan-based high school student. Of course, there are 48 other excellent pieces to peek at before casting your vote, though you’ve gotta get in there before May 10th at 11:59pm ET.

The Engadget Show won two Webby Awards, now we’re giving away two Nexus 7s!

The Engadget Show won two Webbys, now you can win a Nexus 7!

We’d like to thank the Academy and all the little people who helped along the way — but mostly we’d like to thank you, our viewers, for helping The Engadget Show win not one, but two Webby Awards this year. That’s right, our plucky little show managed to pick up two of the coveted coils, and we’re frankly overjoyed. We’re so pumped, in fact, that we don’t want the winning to end. As our way of thanking you for the support you’ve given the show in the past year, we’re giving away a shiny new 32GB HSPA+ Nexus 7 to two lucky winners (one for each Webby, naturally), which you can use to watch the latest episode! And once you’re done with that, there’s an included $25 Google Play gift card to find more stuff to watch (there are plenty more free episodes for you, once that runs out).

Redact offers £10,000 if you crack its messaging app, bets UK government you can’t

Redact offers 10,000 if you crack its messaging app, bets UK government you can't

Software developers looking to kickstart (or simply brag about) their security have a common trick up their sleeve: give away prizes to successful crackers. Redact is trying just such a strategy with its Secure Messenger app for iOS. It’s offering £10,000 ($15,482) to anyone who can visit London and successfully intercept an encrypted message delivered through the company’s peer-based, PIN-to-PIN communication system. Entrants have until June 1st to prove that they’re worthy of making an attempt. Redact has more reason to hope we lose beyond its pride and a big fat check, however — it wants approval for handling the UK government’s secure data, and it wouldn’t hurt to have proof that the app design is airtight. If you’re convinced that it’s all just bluster, you can challenge the company yourself at the source link.
