Adobe XD’s Mighty and Napoleon prepare for retail, Contour and Parallel apps introduced (eyes-on)

Adob XD's Mighty and Napoleon tabletaimed design tools set for retail, Contour and Parallel apps introed eyeson

As you’ve likely read today, Adobe XD has announced its plans to officially bring Projects Napoleon and Mighty — a drafting ruler and cloud-connected stylus for iPads — to retail in 2014. Rather than make the consumer-facing hardware itself, the company’s relying on Adonit’s manufacturing prowess. Creative professionals can rest assured that the tools will function with Creative Cloud. The retail versions will be much like the prototypes, except that Adobe ditched Bluetooth in the ‘short ruler,’ Napoleon. It now uses only capacitive touch and a single button (see above) to act as a selector for options within apps. Mighty will ship with a non-replaceable tip that’s just under 2mm, but it’s otherwise the same and includes a lipstick-style carrying case / charger.

On top of all that, Adobe’s introducing Projects Contour and Parallel as its next serious experiments in the area. They will was serve reference apps to highlight the kinds of functionality the tools could afford designers. Contour is Adobe’s take on a draft-sketching app, while Parallel is an iPhone app that lets you grab photos of objects in real life and instantly convert them into vectors — as you’d expect, both intermingle. No word on whether these apps will make it out of Adobe’s in-progress lair just yet, but a rep gave us a coy smile and note to stay tuned. You’ll find a video of the apps after the break, as well as our early hands-on with Napoleon and Mighty from June. %Gallery-slideshow85057%

Sony Action Cam Redux: Let's Try Again, This Time With Built-In GPS

Exactly a year ago, Sony dove into the GoPro-like adventure camera market only to leave us wanting a little more from its tiny Action Cam. The new AS30V comes with a few new features, including GPS connectivity and higher-resolution 12-megapixel stills. Is that enough to finally make Sony’s Action Cam a real competitor?

Cox Cable is the latest pay-TV company to relaunch its viewing experience, putting features formerly branded as Trio and Cox TV Connect under the new Contour umbrella. Contour is the new name of its guide for TV and accompanying iPad app, all focused on creating a personalized experience for each user, with tailored suggestions and favorites for up to eight individual profiles. This comes along with the “Record 6” 6-tuner DVR, featuring 2TB of space for up to 300 hours of HD storage and whole home DVR support. How to Get Better Action Cam Footage

Action cameras seem simple enough. Strap it to your head, hit record, and go, right? While that’s essentially true, your video may not turn out like the ones you see the pros making. So we wrangled up some of them up at Winter X Games, and got some simple, easy to incorporate tips that’ll kick your next video up a notch or two. More »

Contour’s new action camera features point-and-shoot simplicity

GoPro announced a new action camera today, and Contour, another player in the market, matched it by announcing the new ContourRoam2 camera. Contour currently produces the Countour+2, which is a full-featured high-end camera, but at $400 it was out of reach for most skate rats. The ContourRoam2 starts at $200, and it can record 1080p at 30 frames per second, and also 720p at 60 frames per second. It features a time-lapse photo capture, which can take a photo at seven different intervals ranging from one second to once every minute. But the feature that many action sports enthusiasts will appreciate is the lack of buttons: there’s only one switch that both turns the camera on and starts recording. And to make sure your shots are lined up correctly, there’s a laser level. As for storage, it comes with a 4GB microSD card, but of course dedicated shooters will pop that out and plug in a bigger card as soon as they can.

The ContourRoam2 is available for $200 from Amazon now, and will be available at retailers on October 21.

ContourROAM2: An HD Action Cam on the Cheap

Being an avid road racer, I own several cameras that are designed to use suction cup mounts and stick to a car when you’re racing on the track. One thing about those cameras is that they are generally $300 and up to get a decent HD resolution camera. Contour has announced a new camera called the ContourROAM2 that is a basic action camera costing under $200.

The lightweight (5.1 oz.), waterproof camera is available for pre-order in black, blue, red, and green for $199.99(USD). The main differences between the ROAM2 and its more expensive ($399.99) sibling, the Contour+2 is the lack of Bluetooth, GPS and HDMI outputs. It offers the ability to record full HD 1080p resolution video at 30 frames-per-second or 720p resolution video at 60 fps for slow-motion playback. It can also snap 5MP still photos at pre-determined intervals, ranging from 1 to 60 seconds. It’s also got a handy laser level built in for ensuring straight shots.

The ContouROAM2 is designed to be very easy to use with no power button and a sliding instant-on record switch. I can tell you from experience that trying to find the power button and hit record on an action camera can be a pain when you’re wearing gloves and cinched into a racing harness.

The camera ships with a 4 GB microSD card included, as well as a rotating and a flat-surface mount. The only downside is that this camera doesn’t include a suction cup mount for use in vehicles. The suction cup mount accessory is available for an additional $39.99.

ContourROAM2 debuts in red, blue, green and black garb, shoots 1080p video for $199 on October 21

Contour launches Roam2 in red, blue, green and black, shoots 1080p video for $199

The Contour+2 may well be the best digital action camcorder on the market (though Sony and GoPro would beg to differ), but the company knows not everyone wants a $400 shooter to capture their epic runs this ski season. Thus, Contour has introduced the ROAM2, a $199 model that records 1080p 30fps and 720p 60fps video on its included 4GB microSD card. Like the original Roam, it can capture clips up to one meter underwater without an external case, has a 270-degree rotating lens and a laser level to line up your shots. This new Roam, however, sports improved image quality and an aluminum skin of four colors: black, red and blue will be widely available, and green models can be had exclusively from Amazon through the end of the year (other retailers will carry it in 2013). Want one? Best Buy and other retailers will start selling them on October 21st.
