The dedicated MP3 player can be said to have gone all but extinct, especially when you consider that folks these days prefer to carry all of their favorite tunes on a single smartphone (which is more than capable of just playing back your MP3 files, as those do video, too). Well, word has it that Cowon holds out a flicker of hope for the dedicated MP3 player by introducing the Cowon D20, which is a device that offers up to 90 hours of non-stop audio playback.
Oh yeah, we forgot to add, it does video playback too, and we are talking about 13 hours of juice here, which means you can watch the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy without having to charge it up. Too bad the display is nothing much to shout about, being a 2.5-inch, 320 x 240 resistive touchscreen, and has the internal memory of 8GB to 32GB, which can be further augmented via an SD memory card slot. I guess most folks would sacrifice battery life for a larger and higher resolution display, but with pricing details that hover between $125 and $178, depending on capacity, it ain’t too shabby a deal if you are looking for a long distance runner.

There’s no denying it: the MP3 player market is in free fall, and competitors often have to either go big or go home if they want to justify their work over the many smartphone alternatives. Cowon is still kicking, and the extreme battery life of its new D20 player may be a good explanation as to why. Along with 13 hours of video, it can play 90 hours of music on a charge — enough that the tunes could blast non-stop through a long weekend. Not that the player will otherwise rock the boat, as it’s still carrying a 2.5-inch, 320 x 240 resistive touchscreen, 8GB to 32GB of built-in storage, an SD card slot and Cowon’s familiar (if hyper-stylized) interface. The company is partly counting on a low cost to get its foot in the door. Following a tease earlier this month in Russia, the D20 is launching in Japan at prices between ¥11,800 ($125) and ¥16,800 ($178) — not a bad deal, so long as endurance rules your world.

COWON JAPAN has introduced a compact and sleek MP3 player that is affordable and easy to use and has a very long battery life: continuous music max. 90 hours / movie play max. 13 hours.
It has a 2.5 inch LCD touchscreen with 3 capacities: 8GB, 16GB and 32GB. Includes cable to play video with XVID SP/ASP, WMV 7/8/9 (Video codec), and with JetEffect 5.0.
You can select from various sound effects (EQ, BBE, Mach3Bass, 3D Surround, MP Enhance, Stereo Enhanc, etc.), 9 Reverb modes and 48 preset …
I’ve actually stopped using my 160GB iPod Classic, ever since I got my iPhone 4S, but that doesn’t mean that there’s no room for dedicated music players – if done right. While a lot of people use their smartphones to play their favorite tunes, others still prefer standalone media players.
Korea’s Cowon just released their X9 media player and it sports a large 4.3-inch touchscreen display. You can choose between 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB of internal memory, but you can augment this with a microSD card. The player includes a variety of sound processing modes including simulated 3D surround, virtual listening environments, and BBE enhancement among others.
The X9 is supposed to be able to deliver 110 hours of audio playback, or 13 hours of video playback on a single charge, and it takes 4.5 hours to juice this thing up. The X9 starts at $229.99(USD) for the basic model and goes up for more storage.

Cowon X9 begins to ship
Posted in: Today's ChiliI guess you can more or less say that with the introduction of more and more powerful smartphones arriving in the mass market, the need for a dedicated portable media player has diminished – especially when the visual real estate of such smartphones end up larger than ever before – 4″ and above. Well, if you happen to have a soft spot for a dedicated portable media player, you might be interested to hear that Cowon’s X9 is now available and ready to ship, where it will come in either black or white shades.
The Cowon X9 will measure 72.5mm x 114.9mm and tips the scales at 159 grams, while sporting a 4.3-inch touchscreen display. In terms of storage space, you will be able to choose from 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of internal flash memory, which can be further augmented thanks to the inclusion of a microSD memory card slot. Cowon touts that their X9 is capable of delivering up to 110 hours of continuous music playback, which is definitely a boon to any long distance traveler, not to mention up to 13 hours of video playback. In order to juice it up, it takes just 4.5 hours over an AC adapter, although you can take the USB route which requires half a dozen hours instead. Depending on the capacity, price starts from $229.99 onwards.

The latest addition to Cowon’s line of portable media players is reaching consumers’ hands in the good, old US of A as shipping is now underway for the X9. The PMP — which comes in either black or white — measures 72.5mm wide, 114.9mm tall and weighs in at 159 grams. It also features a 4.3-inch touchscreen, your choice of either 8GB, 16GB or 32GB of internal flash memory, as well as a MicroSD slot. Although good sound quality is typically Cowon’s calling card, the X9 also serves up a healthy helping of battery life with the company claiming up to 110 hours of music playback. Operating time when watching video is said to be up to 13 hours while charging time takes 4.5 hours via AC adapter and 6 hours when juicing through a USB connection. Supported file formats include MP3, WMA, OGG, FLAC, APE, WAV, XviD, WMV and ASF. Unlike the Plenue Z2 and the D3, the X9 opts out of using the Android OS — which is either good or bad depending on one’s preferences. Its 480 x 272 resolution is also decidedly lower than, say, the 800 x 480 seen in the Z2’s 3.7-inch screen. As for cost, folks interested in getting the X9 will have to lighten their wallets to the tune of $229.99. For more details, check out the Cowon site via the link below.
