Crytek is the company behind some of the most popular PC and console games ever launched including hits such as Crysis. Another of the popular games that Crytek offers is the free to play title Warface. The downside for Xbox 360 gamers in the past was that the game was not available on consoles. That […]
The penguin has been getting awfully cozy with game developers lately. This time it’s with the company known to make GPUs melt at the faintest whisper of its name: Crytek. According to a recent job listing, the German shooter shop is looking for a programmer to work on a Linux version of CryEngine. Of course, you need to relocate to Deutschland and have a few years experience in software development under your belt. Seeing another major PC studio devoting resources to the open-source OS only increases the growing momentum for Valve’s Steambox ecosystem of choice. To answer the eternal question, it appears that yes, even the Tux can run Crysis.

With Microsoft’s Xbox One hardware reveal out of the way, the company’s shifting focus to its launch lineup. And here at E3, we got a first look at just what the One is capable of with Crytek’s previously announced Ryse: Son of Rome. The game, an exclusive for the platform, lets players take control of a Roman General and features gameplay that’ll have players slashing through hordes of warriors, engaging in Quick Time Events, all set in the Roman Empire. From what was demoed on stage, Ryse looks to be a technically impressive feat, showcasing impressive particle effects, lighting and a massive number of onscreen characters. It’ll be available as an XBox One launch title, so if you’re planning on a pre-order for MS’ next-gen console, this is a future purchase worth considering.
We were teased with Crytek’s newest game last month, called Ryse, but today during Microsoft’s E3 presser, we’re seeing a first-look at the game, having a peek at some of the gameplay in a new trailer. Gamers will be able to experience the rise of the Roman Empire through the eyes of a Roman soldier,
Crytek has a reputation for pushing the limits of hardware with CryEngine — witness the will-it-run-Crysis jokes — so it’s only logical that the company would leap on new consoles with enthusiasm. Sure enough, the company has followed up talk of Xbox One support in CryEngine 3 with word that its extra-pretty engine will also run on the PlayStation 4. Crytek isn’t saying which developers will use the code, although cross-platform games make sense when the PS4, Xbox One and PCs share the same basic x86 architecture. We may hear bit more about early partners next week.

Crytek‘s latest games, called Ryse, had been announced in the past, but very few details were unleashed at that point. Then again, details are still scarce today, but we at least now know that the Kinect-enhanced hack-and-slash game will be coming exclusively to the Xbox One and will be officially unveiled at E3 next month.
The teaser site has a countdown, which ends on June 10. At that time, Crytek will reveal more about the game during a press conference at E3. Ryse was initially announced two years ago at E3 2011, and gamers have since been wondering what happened to the game and if it had been quietly canceled, since we haven’t heard from Crytek about it in a while. However, that’s no longer the case.
Ryse takes place in ancient Rome and the player plays a Roman solider who is controlled using the Kinect rather than the gamepad. Players use gesture-based attacks in order to defeat opponents. You can swing a sword, block attacks, and even kick. We’re not sure the game will be controlled entirely with the Kinect, or if you’ll need the controller for some parts, but the website says it will be “controller-based gameplay enhanced by Kinect.” Either way, you’ll definitely be on your feet for most of the game.
We’re not sure why Ryse never made it to the Xbox 360, but it could be because the Kinect sensor lacked the technology that Crytek wanted to use in order to make different gesture-based attacks realistic. With the improved Kinect sensor on the Xbox One, it seems Crytek is ready to bring the game to prime time.
The release date for the game hasn’t been disclosed, but we’re guessing we’ll see it hit store shelves in time for the holiday season, possibly even launching alongside the Xbox One. The game will be one of the many titles that Microsoft plans to publish to the Xbox One, as confirmed yesterday by the company during the console’s reveal event.

Crytek is looking to reunite Darksiders with its original creators, Vigil. The company hired 35 of Vigil’s employees after the company failed to receive any bids back in THQ’s original auctions. Crytek launched a new studio in Austin, Texas called Crytek USA and housed all of the Vigil employees there. Crytek USA is currently headed by Vigil’s old co-founder, David Adams.
The bidding for Darksiders, as well as the other IPs in THQ’s back catalog auction, will begin on April 1st and will continue on through April 15th. THQ will then have to discuss the bids with the entities that it owes money to, and then it will decide on a primary bidder and back-up bidder for each of its IPs. THQ will then have to present the sales to the court, who will have to approve each sale. Everything is expected to finalize sometime in May.
David Adams tweeted, “Looking to buy @Darksiders IP back from #THQ. The IP belongs in the hands of its creators.” Ryan Stefanelli, the Principal Designer at Crytek USA, further confirmed that Crytek will be bidding for Darksiders’s IP, and that everyone is “excited at the prospect”. It’s still up in the air what Crytek plans on doing with the IP. It had already stated that it doesn’t plan on working on Darksiders 3, because it “doesn’t fit with our strategy”.
Nonetheless, fans, as well as the ex-Vigil staff, will be relieved that Darksiders will return home to its rightful owners. For those of you that are interested in playing Darksiders or Darksiders 2 for the PC, you can purchase the games for extremely cheap through this week’s Humble Bundle. You can pay $1 to get Darksiders, or a little over the average payment to get both games. You will also get Red Faction: Armageddon and Red Faction: Guerrilla.

We’re sure that some Nintendo Wii U owners are bummed that Crysis 3 will not be arriving on their console, as stated by Crytek themselves. However if it is any consolation, it seems that the developers came pretty close to launching Crysis 3 on Nintendo’s latest console system. According to Crytek CEO Cevat Yerli (via VentureBeat), the developer managed to get the game up and running on the Wii U and were “very close to launching it”. So if they managed to get it to work, why didn’t they launch it? It seems that there was a lack of business support between Nintendo and EA, and because Crytek did not have a publishing license, they could not launch Crysis 3 on the Wii U themselves. Ultimately this meant that they had to kill the project. So close, but yet so far. Will we be seeing Crysis 3 launch on the Wii U in the future? That’s hard to say but at least for now, we know that it was a business decision rather than a hardware or software problem that held it back.

NVIDIA has released its latest WHQL-certified GeForce drivers, this time bumping it up to version 314.07. These new drivers are pretty much based on previously-released beta drivers, and the new 314.07 update brings a slew of performance improvements to Crysis 3, as well as a handful of other games.
Specifically, the new 314.07 WHQL drivers improves single-GPU and multi-GPU performance in Crysis 3 by up to 65%, which is quite a jump if you ask us. Plus, other games get a slight boost as well, such as Assassin’s Creed III with a 27% boost, a 19% bost in Civilization V, 14% boost in Call of Duty: Black Ops II, 14% boost in DiRT 3, 11% boost in Just Cause 2, 10% boost in Deus Ex: Human Revolution, 10% boost in F1 2012, and a 10% boost in Far Cry 3.
Crysis 3 just released today actually, so NVIDIA’s timing was perfect on this one, allowing gamers to give their video card a quick boost when it comes to graphic-intensive gameplay. NVIDIA points out in the release notes that EA recomends a GTX 560 or higher for Crysis 3 in order to play it smoothly, or a Geforce GTX 680 if you want the full effect. Of course, the GTX 690 will get you the best performance, with an increase of almost half over the GTX 680.
The new drivers also come with an “Excellent” 3D Vision profile for Crysis 3, as well as a SLI profile for Devil May Cry. You can also grab an updated SLI profile for Warframe, the free-to-play, third-person co-op shooter. All in all, the new 314.07 drivers should be a recommended download for anyone planning to tackle Crysis 3 or any of the other new games that have recently released.

Crysis 3 won’t be arriving in North America until February 19, but you can check out the game’s multiplayer mode a few weeks early thanks to a freshly-announced open beta. Today Crytek revealed this open beta, saying that it will go live on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC on January 29. That happens to be next Tuesday, so Crysis fanatics don’t have much longer to wait until they can get some hands-on time with the game’s multiplayer.
Of course, you won’t have access to all of the multiplayer’s modes and maps during the beta, as that would take a lot of fun out of the full release. Instead, Crytek will only let you test out two modes and two maps. The first mode is called Hunter, which cloaks two players and tasks them with hunting down the others. Once you’re been killed by a cloaked hunter, you become one yourself, with the ultimate goal being either to survive or turn all of the other players into hunters before the round ends.
The other mode, Crash, seems to be typical territories fare, with two teams vying for control over crash-landed alien pods. Your team will gain points as it holds the territory, along with gear that will help you defend it from the opposing team. The two maps featured in the beta are called Airport and Museum, and they should support both multiplayer modes on display.
Players will also be given a taste of the game’s leveling system, as Crytek and Electronic Arts will allow them to level up to rank 10 while playing, unlocking new weapons and add-on for their Nanosuits. The beta will continue on for two weeks, after which time it’s a short wait for the launch of the game. To go along with the beta announcement, Crytek has also released a new trailer that focuses on the abilities of the Nanosuit, which you can see above. Who’s ready for some Crysis 3 multiplayer action?
