Focal camera app removed from CyanogenMod, launched as standalone beta

CyanogenMod's Focal camera app goes standalone following licensing dispute

Not everyone is happy with Cyanogen as a company. Guillaume Lesniak, the creator of CyanogenMod’s Focal camera app, doesn’t like that licensing changes accompanying the new venture would limit his control. Accordingly, he has just removed Focal from CyanogenMod and launched it as a standalone beta. The app includes all the features from its ROM days, including burst shooting, a panorama mode and an equivalent to Google’s Photo Sphere. While the release is a mild inconvenience for CyanogenMod users, it’s ultimately a win for anyone who wants to try Focal — they can now give the app a spin regardless of the firmware they use. If you’re curious, you can download Focal through Google Play.

Oppo N1 Might Be First CyanogenMod Smartphone

Oppo N1 Might Be First CyanogenMod SmartphoneThe Oppo N1 has been teased for some time now by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer, where we are looking forward in anticipation for the unveiling of this device to happen this coming September 23rd. So far, there has not been anything out of the ordinary concerning the software that this model will use, although a new teaser video might change things. After all, this particular teaser video starred Steve Kondik a.k.a CyanogenMod himself, where he did mention that he is excited to be able to attend the Oppo event that is held in Beijing, where both Cyanogen and Oppo have “exciting news ahead”.

Rather cryptic language, don’t you think so? Perhaps the Oppo N1 could be the first CyanogenMod smartphone after all, considering how CyanogenMod has now evolved and grown to be a company that are on the lookout to ship a different flavor of Android on a smartphone which is manufactured by a hardware partner. Having said that, this team up between Oppo and CyanogenMod does not sound too far fetched now, right? I guess we will just have to sit tight and see what else will come out from the September 23rd announcement. Would you pick up a CyanogenMod smartphone right from the get go, or wait for the early reviews to flow in first?

CyanogenMod To Bring AirPlay Mirroring On Android

The Apple TV set-top box offers a feature called AirPlay which allows users to stream content from a compatible device onto their television. There are a number of third party apps available in the Google Play Store which bring this feature to Android devices. However, such apps are often limited in their feature set. Koushik Dutta, the Vice President of Engineering at Cyanogen, today posted a video showing off AirPlay Mirroring from an HTC One. He says that the feature is “coming soon to a CyanogenMod near you,” which implies that AirPlay Mirroring will be built inside the OS.

Dutta hasn’t given a concrete release date as yet, so we’re left guessing. In the past, he has worked on bringing support for a variety of streaming protocols in CyanogenMod. The list includes Roku and DLNA compatible devices, AirPlay is the newest addition to the list. Cyanogen develops some of the most widely used custom ROMs for Android devices. Recently it was incorporated into a formal company with $7 million in funding. The company is expected to partner with a hardware manufacturer to begin shipping devices that come with CyanogenMod pre-installed. Oppo N1 smartphone, which is due to be announced on September 23rd, is believed to be the first CyanogenMod powered smartphone.

Oppo N1 Might Be The First CyanogenMod Powered Smartphone

CyanogenMod custom ROMs for the Android OS are without a doubt one of the widely used ROMs. Cyanogen is actually now a company, it announced yesterday that it has raised $7 million in funding, which it is going to put towards making CyanogenMod the third most popular mobile operating system out there. This goal entails that Cyanogen overtake Windows Phone and BlackBerry, it won’t be able to do that if it doesn’t have any hardware partners. Earlier today it was rumored that perhaps HTC might be the a hardware partner for Cyanogen. It appears though that the first partner might be China’s Oppo.

Oppo has been teasing its N1 smartphone for quite a while, it is due to announce the smartphone at an event in Beijing on September 23rd. The company has now posted a new video which features Steve Kondik, the founder of Cynaogen, himself. He says in the video that he’s “looking forward” to attend Oppo’s event later this week, he also says that “we have exciting news ahead,” wonder if this news is the possibility that Oppo N1 might be the first smartphone to ship with CyanogenMod pre-installed? The Oppo N1 is scheduled to be unveiled on September 23rd, we’ll know for sure then.

HTC Could Be Official Hardware Partner Of CyanogenMod

HTC Could Be Official Hardware Partner Of CyanogenMod At the Cyanogen Inc. formation announcement, there was a particularly interesting bit of information that was pointed out by those who went through the entire announcement with a keen eye for detail. It seems that Cyanogen Inc. are currently in cahoots, or rather, partnership, with a major smartphone OEM. This deal has already been struck, but the official announcement is set to be announced in a few weeks’ time. CyanogenMod fans would be extremely happy to hear this particular news, where it translates to being able to buy an official CyanogenMod handset sometime in 2014.

As for the mystery suitor in this case, Blog of Mobile claims that HTC are the ones who are actually the unnamed major smartphone OEM. This particular report first made its way to the Internet after drawing inspiration from a post on Ruliweb forums. While it might be that Cyanogen Inc. office and the HTC Developer Center branch happen to be located in Seattle, only time will tell whether their hardware collaborations, if confirmed, are able to bring HTC up to the next level in terms of the pecking order. Who do you think would do a better job as being the official hardware partner of Cyanogen?

Cyanogen Raises $7M In Funding To Conquer The Mobile OS MarketCyanogenMod is currently on the move to raise venture capital funding, and according to CyanogenMod’s new CEO and co-founder, they have big plans for the company, with the aim to become the No. 3 in the mobile OS arena. That is certainly quite an achievement if they were to actually hit their target, considering how they would have to bypass the likes of BlackBerry OS and of course, the current third place mobile OS, Windows Phone from Microsoft. As Cyanogen’s first new product as a company, it will come in the form of a CyanogenMod installer app.

Android enthusiasts would have had their fair share of CyanogenMod in the past, and for those who are not in the know, you will soon hear more about them from now on. Having secured $7 million in Series A funding from Benchmark Capital, the CyanogenMod team intends to make their dream a reality instead of having it remain within the confines of a fan project all this while. CyanogenMod co-founder and developer Steve Kondik, said, “There’s almost this entire developer ecosystem around it. We’re going to do a lot of work around the user experience. You’re going to see us building secure services. To get more people to use it, we have all these little touches planned.”
