Currys and PC World now offer same-day delivery to impulsive UK tech shoppers

Currys and PC World offer sameday delivery to impulsive UK tech shoppers

Brits who can’t stand waiting for gadget purchases can swing by a Currys or PC World to pick them up immediately, but that also requires the hassle of visiting a big-box store. As of today, impulse buyers won’t have to brave that gauntlet: both Currys and PC World are offering same-day delivery for online orders. UK residents buying small gadgets from either shop before 9:30AM can spend £15 ($23) to have the goods reach their door by 10PM that night. The stores are also offering Sunday afternoon deliveries at similar pricing, and the £5 ($8) next-day option now includes all orders made before midnight. Extra-speedy shipments are initially limited to those in greater London and a handful of other post codes, but the retailers promise wider availability in the near future.

Same-Day Delivery Is Great for Everybody… Except the Deliverers

Same-Day Delivery Is Great for Everybody… Except the Deliverers

We’ve already adjusted to the consumer utopia of buying just about everything online with a single click, but waiting for it to show up is still the hardest part. eBay Now pulled it off in a few places, and it’s not easy; just ask the couriers who are making it happen.

eBay debuts desktop version of eBay Now, service coming to more cities this summer

eBay debuts desktop version of eBay Now, service coming to more cities this summer

eBay’s same-day delivery service has been highly focused on mobile since its very early days, but now the internet giant is looking to change that. Starting today, eBay Now will be available on the desktop, giving shoppers an alternative to using the site on their iOS or Android device. Naturally, this means users can still make the same purchases and have them delivered in a speedy fashion, only they’ll be able to do so on a larger canvas that’s optimized to display things like big imagery, reviews and which stores are most popular.

In addition, the company’s VP of Mobile and Local, Dan Glasgow, told us the service is, as of now, expanding its NYC coverage to Brooklyn and Queens, as well as some more places around the Bay Area. eBay also let us know Now’s getting ready to launch in Chicago and Dallas “later this summer,” adding that new features are set to debut at around the same time, including one which allows for scheduled deliveries. Still hoping it comes to your city? It may very well happen soon — eBay says it’s excited to keep growing and continue expanding the service.

DPD to let UK shoppers track home deliveries in real time (video)

DPD to let UK shoppers track home deliveries in real time video

If you’re like us, you want a better sense of where your packages are than “on truck for delivery.” So does the UK’s DPD, apparently, as it’s rolling out a Follow My Parcel service that will let online shoppers track their goods in real time. The feature gives customers a web link that lets them see both the delivery vehicle’s live position and a package’s place in the queue. The new system is accurate enough to narrow the delivery window to 15 minutes — in theory, recipients won’t be caught off-guard again. There’s also options for giving the shipment to a neighbor or rescheduling the shipment altogether. Follow My Parcel should be available through Interlink Express on August 5th, and British retailer ASOS already plans to offer the service to its customers.

iTray: Flying Drone Serves You Food

Fast food is designed to be served quickly, but it could always be faster. Aimed at expediting service, the world’s first iPad-controlled flying food serving tray is here to help. It can be found at YO! Sushi in Soho, London, where it’s serving meals to customers.

itray

The iTray is a serving tray that can fly at 25mph for a distance of 50 meters to deliver your food.

On-board cameras provide live video feed to waiters and kitchen staff to make sure all is well. The iTray is lightweight, and made of carbon fiber. So they should be safe if they get involved in food delivery crashes. Just order your food and it will be flown to your table.

This awesomely ridiculous food delivery method will be introduced in 64 UK branches by 2014 if the pilot phase is successful. And how can it not be? Unless iTrays start dropping food on customers or smacking them in the head, of course.

Domino’s Drone Delivers Pizza: Is That Delivery or Di-dron-o?

It looks like Domino’s Pizza is at it again. A few weeks back they started renting DVDs in Brazil that smell like pizza when they get hot. Now here they are delivering pizza using drones. Maybe the upcoming robot apocalypse isn’t so bad after all. What’s the worst that could happen? Your pizza gets cold in the air? It takes an extreme bank and your cheese and toppings slide off?

I guess a Pizza Hut drone could always fire lasers at the Domino’s drone and scatter your pizza across the winds, causing pepperoni showers in your local weather report. Begun, the pizza drone wars have!

Of course the pizza drone is all a publicity stunt, but the important thing is that it can be done. Screw human contact. Drones can bring you food, and won’t talk back if you undertip them. Though they might kill you.

Pizza Hut app comes to Xbox 360, unstoppable force meets immovable gamer

Pizza Hut app coming to Xbox 360 owners it was inevitable, really

Let’s be frank: many dedicated console gamers among us have at least briefly dreamed of ordering food without having to lift our hands from the controller. That’s about to be more than a fleeting fantasy for Xbox 360 owners, as Microsoft is launching a Pizza Hut app today for those permanently lodged in the living room. The release puts all of the delivery menu a quick hop away on the Dashboard, including custom orders. Buyers can tempt their friends through Facebook, and there’s even Kinect support for greasy-handed customers who’d rather not touch the gamepad (or a napkin, apparently) when requesting a second serving. Microsoft stresses that the Pizza Hut partnership isn’t the start of a broad trend toward ordering real products through an Xbox, which is just as well — our arteries can only take so much inactivity at once.

U.S. Postal Service No Longer Planning On Ending Saturday Mail Delivery

U.S. Postal Service No Longer Planning On Ending Saturday Mail Delivery

Back in February, the U.S. Postal Service announced its plans to end Saturday mail delivery for regular mail, such as letters, although the organization would still continue delivering packages. It looks as though USPS is retracting their plans to stop Saturday mail service according to a recently published memo.

In the memo, USPS pointed blame squarely at Congress for passing a continuing budget resolution that would prohibit a new mail delivery schedule. Congress wrote in the budget resolution they would continue funding of the USPS as long as it was able to maiming the same level of service it did since 1983. (more…)
