Rubik’s Cube Chest of Drawers is Way Too Easy to Solve

It’s funny that in this wide world of geekery that this actually isn’t the first Rubik’s Cube chest of drawers I’ve seen. In fact, it’s not even the first one we’ve featured on Technabob. However, this Rubik’s Cube chest of drawers is the first one that you can actually purchase. At least I think so.

rubiks cube drawers 1

This 2-foot-cubic set of drawers was created by engineer/carpenter Scott Blackwell of WoodCurve, and looks just like a giant version of the iconic 1980s puzzle. You can even rotate the drawers on one of the axes, which might make digging around for your socks in the dark a bit of a challenge if someone left any side other than the orange one facing out.

You can get your own Rubik’s Cube chest of drawers for $595(USD) over on Etsy. I’m still waiting for a version that works on both axes before I buy one for myself.

GE Scientists Unveil High-Tech Sleigh for Santa

For generations, Santa has been cruising around Christmas Eve in his red sleigh pulled by his flying reindeer. Scientists at GE think it’s time for Santa Claus to update his ride with some new high-tech materials. So scientists have come up with a greener and smarter sleigh to help Santa get around the world tonight delivering gifts.

The concept sleigh would use 3-D printed parts, including a more aerodynamic blade design that improves energy efficiency. It’s also sprayed with nanotech Icephobic coatings to repel ice and water. The sleigh is constructed using Ceramic Matrix Composites in the frame, enabling it to travel into space and return to Earth without burning up on re-entry. Considering this thing is an open top sleigh, Santa will need a spacesuit.

The sleigh is also equipped with an electric traction motor that has MEMS switching technology to take over the powertrain when the reindeer to rest. In addition, it’s connected to the Internet, allowing Santa to navigate efficiently around air traffic and keep an eye on the last minute naughty or nice list updates. Check out more details about Santa’s shiny new ride in the Flash widget below:

Batman Chess Set Priced for Bruce Wayne

Let me start by saying that this Batman chess set will set you back $795(USD). That’s a lot of money in this economy – especially during the Christmas season. It’s amazing just to behold, let alone play with. A press of the Batman symbol illuminates 50 LED lights around the clear playing surface, with Gotham City underneath and projecting a Bat-Signal into the sky. Yeah, now I have to have it.

This set is full of awesome details. Playing pieces include the Joker, Catwoman, Riddler, Penguin, Batman, Robin, Batgirl and Commissioner Gordon among others. The board measures 20 inches on each side, while the  pieces measure between 2-1/2 to 5-1/2 inches tall and are made from fine pewter and die-cast metal.

I no know how Bruce Wayne plays chess when sitting alone in the Batcave.

Light by Moore’s Cloud Goes for Homegrown Crowdfunding

About a month ago, a project launched on Kickstarter called the Light by Moore’s Cloud. Unfortunately, the project failed to meet its funding goal, despite gathering about 2,000 supporters. With the company’s Kickstarter funding plans foiled, it has decided to run its own homegrown crowdfunding project.

light moores cloud

The Light is an open-source, computer-controlled cube that has 52 individual LEDs inside that can change to any of 2 million different colors. The light can be configured to produce static colors, or cool animation effects. The Light is also Wi-Fi connected allow you to control it from an application running on the iPad or iPhone. And since it’s running an embedded Linux computer with the LAMP stack on it, you can write your own custom applications for it as well.

Moore’s Cloud is now seeking funding from its own website allowing people to pre-order the Light for $149(USD). That is about $50 more expensive than the device was on Kickstarter. Not only is the device more expensive, but it now has a $10 shipping fee as well. The increased prices will allow them to go into production with about 3,000 of the lights being pre-sold, which is significantly lower than the nearly 7,000 they had to sell to hit their Kickstarter goal. The increased price could be a turn-off to the people who had previously committed on Kickstarter, so only time will tell if they will hit their goal.

Assuming they can make it this time, they’re estimating a ship date of July 2013.

Polaroid Mirrorless Android Camera to Be Unveiled at CES 2013

It’s been confirmed that Polaroid will unveil an Android-powered, mirrorless, interchangeable-lens camera, at CES 2013. While I would have liked for Polaroid to announce that they will continue making old-school instant cameras, this isn’t bad news.

polaroid im1836

The rumor mill says that the Polaroid IM1836 will have an 18.1-megapixel sensor, and a 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen. It was also said that the camera will include a pop-up flash, Wi-Fi, an HDMI output, a 10-30mm lens and will use MicroSD. There aren’t many more details available, but hopefully we’ll get more information after the new year, or perhaps even some sneaky bits during the holidays. Most of Asia is working during Christmas, after all.

There’s no word yet on what the price point will be for the camera.
