PhotoBot robotic camera takes pictures on its own

PhotoBot is a tiny robotic camera that is designed and built by Tommy Dykes, a British digital product designer. What makes the PhotoBot unique from the rest is its ability to scan a given area, locate people through its ultrasonic sensor, and automatically take pictures of them while instantly displaying the photos on a tiny screen. The robotic camera concept came to Dykes when he was exploring for other alternative ways of doing photography.

“This automation allows people to enjoy an occasion, such as a party, in the knowledge that the occasion is being documented photographically without the need for them to do it themselves,” he adds. The design of the PhotoBot, according to Dykes, is anthropomorphic or human-like, therefore creating a sense of trust and fun that quickly dispels the sense of surveillance. Earlier versions of the PhotoBot was reportedly condemned by some users as creepy and a tool that can be used for spying. Dykes managed to solve the dilemma by making its lens and display screen more visible to the naked eye.

Modular Puzzle Keyboard Lets You Re-arrange the Keys to Your Heart’s Content

Do you hate how the letters are arranged on all of the keyboards that are currently on the market? If your fingers never really got used to how the keys were arranged, then you’d better hope that this concept design called the ‘Puzzle Keyboard’ gets picked up someday.

modular keyboard
It’s basically a modular keyboard where each key can be separated from the other. You can take the whole thing apart and re-arrange it from scratch to construct your own keyboard with the letters positioned exactly where you want them.

The Puzzle Keyboard was designed by Wan Fu Chuna and won a Red Dot design award in the Interaction and Communication category.

Star Wars Corsets: May the Force Be With Your Cinched-Up Waist

Nothing helps accentuate a woman’s curves more than corsets. Recently, more and more geek-themed corsets are getting made to the delight of hot female nerds and non-nerds everywhere. Alien and Doctor Who have had their turns with the Facehugger corset and TARDIS corset, respectively.

Now it’s time for the force of the Star Wars corsets to be reckoned with.

Star Wars CorsetsHalloween will certainly be over by the time you get these corsets in the mail, but who ever said they were only for Halloween? Bring them out for cosplays, lace up for parties and other special occasions, and wear them whenever you want to feel pretty and geeky at the same time.

The Boba Fett corset on the right can also be for a Rogue-themed costume if you’re planning to cosplay some X-Men at your next con.

These corsets (and a whole lot of other designs) are available from the Damsel in this Dress Etsy shop.

Natural Keyboard Grown from a Laser Cutter

We’ve seen wooden computer peripherals before, but designer and programmer Robbie Tilton took it a step further. Turned off by the synthetic, “visually bland and tactilely inept” design of some gadgets, Tilton made a keyboard that looks like it sprung out from the ground.

Tilton based his project on Apple’s wireless keyboard. He probably chose it in keeping with his nature theme amirite? He used a laser cutter to make the wooden frame and then bent the wood to assume the shape of the original keyboard. I’m not sure if the keys are all wood or if the Apple keys are sandwiched in between thin pieces of wood. Ironically, Tilton wasn’t able to find real moss, so he had to settle for imitation moss to cover the keyboard.

The irony of the moss aside, I think the keyboard looks good. I think a mouse with a soft grassy surface would be nice as well. I don’t want it to be made from a “natural” mouse though.

Oakley Airwave Goggles: Become the Robo Skier You’ve Always Wanted to Be

I have to admit that I didn’t think that heads-up display goggles would be initially be marketed to snowboarders, but I now look forward to having a HUD in my everyday eyewear, or on my motorcycle helmet.

oakley airwave goggle

The snow-sport focused Oakley Airwave Goggles have a little prism at the bottom right of your peripheral vision that displays useful information. You can see GPS/navigation routes, buddy tracking to find your friends with goggles, or friends who don’t have them but are running the app, as well as music controls, speed and jump analytics, and more.

You can even pair them to your smartphone and view incoming calls and texts. All of these features are controlled via a wrist remote, and the companion app will work on Android or iOS.

The HUD is perceived as a 14-inch screen that is five feet away, so refocusing of the eye isn’t necessary. The goggles have built-in GPS and accelerometers, so your data can be stored in them when your phone runs out of juice. The goggles are being launched today, and will sell for $599 (USD) at the Oakley Store.

Pumpktris: Now You Can Play Tetris on a Pumpkin

Now who would have thought that we’d see Tetris make its big comeback on a pumpkin? With Halloween upon us, I suppose that this themed ‘console’ is totally appropriate.

Pumpktris

It’s definitely a step up from all the usual jack’o’lanterns that people usually put out this time of the year. Nathan from HaHa Bird got the idea to grow Tetris-shaped pumpkins last year, but never got around to doing it.

So instead of growing pumpkins shaped like Tetris pieces, he decided to install an actual Tetris game into a hollowed out pumpkin. Hence, the Pumpktris.

The stem of the pumpkin acts as the controller, with about 128 LEDs illuminating the game ‘screen’ with puzzle pieces. Happy Halloween, Tetris style!

Jaguar unveils speedboat concept to complement its XF Sportbrake

Jaguar, the British luxury and sports car manufacturer, has been thinking out of the box. In preparation for the international driving debut of the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake, the car maker has unveiled a concept speedboat to complement it. According to Jaguar, the concept speedboat will showcase the design DNA of the British premium luxury and sports car manufacturer in an unexpected and spectacular package.

Jaguar has partnered with yacht design specialist Ivan Erdevicki and design project management company Seventy Seven Design to develop the concept speedboat. Measuring 20-foot-long, the speedboat features a gel coat fibreglass hull that is finished with a teak decking. The wood decking is split by a carbon fiber fin and its 2+1 cabin has been design to mimic Jaguar cars. There’s also a aluminum propeller and pop-up mooring post that imitates how the boat could be powered and docked.

While the speedboat concept looks nice, Jaguar has says that the company has no plans of selling it to the market. “We recognise that both our existing and future customers enjoy diverse and active lifestyles. With the launch of the new Jaguar XF Sportbrake, we had an opportunity to create a vision of how our design philosophy might be applied to an alternative product, in which speed and beauty are also priorities,” said Ian Callum, Director of Design at Jaguar.

Cheaper prosthetic finger prototype could be a blessing to many

10,000 miles will not stop Richard Van As of South Africa and Ivan Owen of Washington State from building an inexpensive prosthetic finger prototype that could one day help millions of amputees. Richard lost his arm last year in an accident. In spite of his condition, he did not lose hope and decided to search for prosthetics online that could help him. After a seemingly futile search, he eventually found one of Ivan’s mechanical hand prop videos on YouTube. (more…)

Steve Jobs Venus Yacht: Not Yet Available at the Apple Store

I have never been one for boats or yachts, but even I could be persuaded to give yacht-life a try in this magnificent vessel that was co-designed by the Apple-master himself, Steve Jobs. This was the boat that Steve Jobs was working on until his untimely death in 2011.

Venus was a collaborative effort between Steve Jobs and Philippe Starck, and it measures over 230 feet in length. Just like your MacBook Pro, it’s has an aluminum shell. The interior cabin is equipped with a set-up of seven 27-inch iMacs for its control room.

I wonder if they’ve upgraded to the new iMac that will be released shortly. The yacht is akin to an Apple store, with large windows, almost from floor to ceiling. The main living area has walls of glass that are forty feet long and ten feet high (!).

Venus finally made its maiden appearance in the city of Aalsmeer in the Netherlands. If you’re wondering how much Venus cost to build, it’s way more money than you could ever afford.

Could You Live in a 3×3 Meter Space? This Cube Shows You How You Can!

I’ve seen homeless people walking around with nothing more than the clothes on their back and a piece of cardboard that serves as their bed-slash-umbrella-slash-bathroom wall, depending on the situation.

There’s more than enough space for these people to get settled in, but unfortunately not enough resources to make it happen.

CubeThe Cube home design by Justin Chong might just be a concept for urban living, but there’s huge potential for this to be used for urban housing for the poor. Just imagine how many people you could get off the streets and into these relatively cushy, compact living quarters that wouldn’t require that much space in the first place.

The Cube fits an entire apartment into a 3×3 meter space. There’s even a bathroom with a water-saving shower and toilet, a kitchen with an induction stove and a small refrigerator, plus there’s a dining area that can seat up to four people.

There’s also a loft bed that fits two, which can be accessed by the ladder you see beside the dining area.

Pretty awesome, right? Of course, there’s not much room for all your other stuff, but this is the most efficient use of space I’ve seen in years!
