Apple updates iMac with Haswell chips, available today starting at $1,299

While you would be excused for thinking the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c were Apple’s latest offerings, you’d be wrong. Today, Cupertino has announced that the iMac range has been updated to include new silicon (Haswell) new GPUs and improved WiFi. The entry-level 21.5-inch iMac houses a 2.7GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with iris Pro graphics, while the top spec version (both sizes) comes with 3.4GHz and NVIDIA GeForce 700 series graphics, plus the option to upgrade to core i7 at 3.5 GHz. That WiFi refresh brings “next gen” 802.11ac, and there’s also support for PCIe-based flash storage meaning up to 3TB of Fusion drive, or 1TB SSD. The new models are available today, starting at $1,299 for the 21.5-inch, and $1,499 for the bigger display.

SolidRun’s $45 CuBox-i mini PC runs both Linux and Android

DNP

Mini computers exist thanks in no small part to Moore’s Law, but one running Linux and Jelly Bean is pretty unique. Developer SolidRun isn’t new to the tiny PC scene, but since it released the original CuBox in 2011, it’s stayed relatively quiet. That silence breaks with the four CuBox-i models that are up for pre-order right now. The 2-inch cube computers range in price from the $44.99 CuBox-i1 base model to a fully kitted out $119.99 CuBox-i4Pro. That $120 gets you a quad-core processor with each core running at 1 GHz, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, built-in WiFI and Bluetooth (a spec sheet with all features across all models is after the break). Regardless of price, each model features SATA support, HDMI 1.4 and optical audio ports, which could make a CuBox-i running the latest version of XBMC the perfect workaround to a bulky HTPC.

USB-powered BB Sniper Rifle: USBB Gun

If you need a new weapon for your desk and fancy yourself a sniper, this USB powered BB gun should do the trick. Shoot your co-workers and make a nuisance of yourself all day long.

bb usb 1
This USB-powered gun is made to fire BBs, but that’s not all. It also has an onboard camera above the barrel so you can use your computer screen as viewfinder. The barrel can be rotated 120 degrees horizontally, and has a 35 degree vertical range of motion. How cool is that? This sniper rifle will fire BBs at a 30m/s velocity and has about an 8m range. I’m not sure how hard that is, but it probably doesn’t feel too good to get hit with one.

Pew pew pew all day long. It is a great way to kill some time at work while pretending you are a sniper. It sells for ¥9,999 (~$101 USD) over at Shanghai Donya – which is an odd name for a store located in Japan.

WSJ: BlackBerry mulling spinning off BBM subsidiary, considering desktop version

We’ll say this, BlackBerry looks to be considering everything when it comes to pulling in revenue from its messaging service. False alarms aside, the company already let slip that BlackBerry Messenger is on its way to iOS and Android some time this season, and now according to The Wall Street Journal‘s usual gang of anonymous sources “familiar with the matter,” the Canadian company is thinking of spinning off the service as a more independent subsidiary carrying the straight-forward name, BBM Inc. ahead of a potential sale. A desktop version of the app may be on the docket as well, according to the article — BlackBerry, naturally, only reconfirmed its Android and iOS plans, refusing to comment on anything else.
