When Will We See USB 3.0 Support in Laptops?

This question came in from reader Steven Feldman:

Hi, just a question about USB 3.0. I am going to be purchasing a laptop in the next few months… I have been waiting because I want to get a SSD (solid state drive) in the laptop that can hold 256GB minimum for a reasonable price, but that is a story in itself. I have recently been reading about USB 3.0 technology being developed, and if I buy a laptop soon, I don’t think I can upgrade it to USB 3.0 from 2.0 without replacing the motherboard.

I read online that products will be coming out for USB 3.0 in Q4 of 2009, but I don’t care about the products; what I do care about is when laptops will be able to support the USB 3.0 technology. When are motherboards for laptops going to have USB 3.0 support in them?

Are You in Love with the Dell Adamo? Sign Up

Dell%20adamo%20model.JPGAre you in love with the Dell Adamo luxury notebook? Really in love? Maybe, crazy in love?

If so, then you need to click on over to the dedicated “Adamo By Dell” Web site the PC maker has set up, complete with arty panning shots of models like the one to the left, none of which seem to actually inspire love.

If you do sign up, you’ll have the chance to receive updates and apparently score yourself an Adamo, which is due to be released in the first half of 2009. (Note: I mean “buy”. To my knowledge, Dell isn’t running a contest for a free Adamo.)

A YouTube walkthrough of the Adamo is here.

Dells Multi-Touch Tablet, With Video

Dell’s Multi-Touch tablet announced earlier this morning, touting its semi-new, two-fingered gestures that are destined to be compared to those of the Apple iPhone 3G. Though it’s purely a marketing video, there might be something here tablet users can look forward to. Here’s hoping that all these gestures are as intuitive as the real thing.

Archos Combining Phone, Tablet with Android

Archos%205.JPGIn a joint statement, Archos and Texas Instruments said Monday that Archos will launch a so-called Internet Media Tablet that will use the Google Android software stack to add phone functionality.

The tablet will be released during the third quarter, the companies said in their statement. The new IMT will be a followon to the Archos 5, pictured, which was launched in October.

The flagship addition is obviously the Android stack, which will turn the tablet into a full-fledged smartphone. “With the integration of voice, ARCHOS is looking to expand beyond portable media players to provide solutions for the converged space, where a foundation in high-quality video content delivery is a benefit,” the company said in a statement.

It Came From Outer Space: DIY Asteroid Case Mod

Asteroid-Case-Mod.jpg

Ever wish your desktop looked a little more out-of-this-world? Here’s a DIY case mod that will launch your PC into space.

Project Asteroid started out as a wholly unremarkable Yeong Yang A-101 microATX case. Stripped of its “unscrewable parts,” re-clad in Styrofoam, Claycrete, and paint, and outfitted with alien-green accents, it now looks truly extraterrestrial.

Panasonic Toughbook 52: Latest to Get Touch-Screen Capabilities

Panasonic_Toughbook_CF-52.jpg

We were already fans of the Panasonic Toughbook CF-52, the company’s semi-rugged laptop (and the line’s first shot at the consumer marketplace), when we reviewed it back in the fall of 2007. The only complaint we raised about this feature-rich laptop its high cost (a staggering $3,300, for our test configuration). Thankfully, the system has come down in price since then, and Panasonic has just announced a few extra goodies to sweeten the pot.

The biggest update is the addition of a 13-inch touch screen option for the 52, but other new features include an adjustable dual overhead keyboard light, and a 1,000 nit anti-glare, anti-reflective screen option for easier outdoor viewing. More after the jump!

Lenovo Boots American CEO

My guess is that, in light of this on-going economic crisis, 2009 will likely prove itself a banner year for executive shakeups. Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo is starting at the top, replacing the head of its American wing, William J. Amelio.

A former Dell executive, Amelio signed a three-year contract with the company back in 2005. During his tenure with Lenovo, the company slipped to fourth place in the world PC market, behind Acer.

Amelio’s CEO spot will be filled by current chairman, Yang Yuanqing. Yuanqing’s position, in turn will be filled by the company’s founder, Liu Chuanzhi.

New ASUS Eee PC: First Intel Atom 280-Powered Netbook

ASUS EeePC 1000he

The Eee PC 1000he, which ASUS announced today, is at least the company’s 10th netbook, yet the new model shows a couple of marked changes over previous Eee PCs and a number of minor tweaks as well.

The 1000he is the first netbook to use Intel’s new Atom N280 processor. The chip’s specs indicate slight improvements over the Atom N270 processor, which has become ubiquitous in netbooks. Another welcome addition to this model is a significant price drop.

India Government Working on $10 Laptop

Move over, $200 netbooks. According to a recent report by The Times Online, India’s government is currently in the process of developing a 500 rupee ($10) laptop.

Set to make its public debut this week, the computer was designed to bridge the massive “digital divide” between the country’s classes. The notebook follows the development of a $2,000 car and a $10 phone.

The development of the super-cheap notebook is being regarded as a response to OLPC’s $200 XO Laptop. According to developers, the current machine actually costs closer to $20, but the price would be halved if the computer were mass-produced.
